Name : Dr. Riali Deandres, PhD
Age : 157 (Appears in her 20s)
Gender : Female
Species : El’Aurian
Rank : Lieutenant
Assignment : USS Manhattan
With an age breaching a century and a half, Riali has had quite some time to figure out exactly who she is. She has discovered, through trial and error, who she wants to be. However, despite her age and the wisdom that has come along with it, Riali is still an adventurous woman. She is young for her people and has a long life ahead of her, one she hopes to spend taking risks, as if today was her last day. Wise, but not senile, Riali still behaves like any other young scientist. She is quirky and charming in her own way, but she still takes jumps she probably should not. Riali is an intellectual woman, but she is far from being the modern major scientist. She just spent her entire life planet hopping. She tends to be upbeat, but she has her days when she doesn’t have the mental energy for being her peculiar self. It just depends.
Human in appearance, one would not know Riali was El’Aurian, unless she gave away her age. With a lean stature and tightly curled hair, she seems quite average in her appearance.. until someone realizes her skin is a myriad of different hues. Suffering from vitiligo, Riali has patches of paler skin mixed with the dark chocolate of her natural skin tone. She is a bit of an oddity, with her accompanied heterochromia, but it somehow matches her weird personality.
Riali has aways been a bit of a wanderer. She never stays in a place for too long. In fact, she only joined Starfleet about twenty two years prior, before that, she worked a very different job. She is stable, mentally, seeming quite sure of herself, if even a bit reserved at first. She is an enigma to many people, as she doesn’t actively discuss her past, unless directly asked.
Due to her vitiligo, she does burn easier than other people. Thus, she does her best to try and avoid being under direct sunlight, without protection. Her condition seems stable, and her patches are not actively spreading. Thus, besides several hiccups in her previous years, including two miscarriages, Riali is incredibly healthy.
Born one hundred fifty seven years ago, when the universe was a much different place, well.. not too different, Riali grew up on a small moon colony in the Alpha Centauri system. Her father, a well known ecotourist ‘photographer,’ and her mother, an established writer, made for a life of constant movement. While her home always remained upon that small moon, in her quiet corner of nowhere, her life consisted of travelling the stars and exploring their reaches, tagging along with her nomadic parents. Truly, she has never understood stability.
Schooling was never much of an issue for her, as she would spent a few hours each day working on school work (homeschooled) and the rest would be spent exploring with her parents. She was not stellar at school, nor was she horrible, she was a fairly average student getting the equivalent of As an Bs all throughout her schooling career. Although, she did excel at the sciences, all attributed to her life surrounded by nature a minimal civilisation. Growing up, her friends consisted mostly of the animals she met along the way, her nomadic family making it difficult to really create many bonds.
At the age of eighteen, she decided to head off and go to college, first attending the Denebian Academy of Science, in pursuit of a degree in wildlife biology. Graduating, five years later, Riali was asked to join a group of scientists who went to track an ecosystem on a newly discovered planet, by the name of Linus IX, the ninth planet from its home star. For to years, under the command of Doctor Richard Von Atkinson, Riali asssited in the gathering of data, capturing an releasing animals and a wide variety of other things. However, despite her extensive time spent on the mission, she managed only to co-write two papers, focussing more on the photography of the animals. During the expedition, she met a woman by the name of D’Arnimus, a young Deneb woman. However, their relationship was long but ended on a bad note, for D’Arnimus wished to settle down after the expedition, but Riali could never agree to that.
Leaving the woman she had considered the love of her life, Riali spent the next ten years exploring the Linus system, balancing her time between studying the planet’s ecology, and going to school to get other degrees in biochemistry and marine biology. She worked primarily on her own, using the base set up for her original expedition as the base for her new one. In those ten years, young scienists came and went, stopping by to check on her work and study with her for a few months, then move on to the next best thing. During this time, she published ten papers, one per year, one per planet, each under the title line of: Linus Exposed, and their respective planet name.
Feeling confined to the planets, she felt the urge to find something new to explore, having spent the previous twelve years confined to the Linus system. Handing over the project to a middle aged Vulcan by the name of V’Lari, she ventured back into the stars, where she would spend the next thirty years endeavoring adventures of her own accord, while continuing her studies in science. During this time period, she was with an El’Aurian man named Gorvian, whom she married. However, their attempts at children were fruitless, both miscarried before full term. When Gorvian was called away to a five-year mission, his primary practice being Starfleet Medicine, they did their best to keep in touch.
During their time apart, Riali had broadened her scientific spectrum, looking into planet science and geology, where she endeavoured a trip to Bemian V, to assist in a geological survey of the planet. Here, she assisted in photography, once more, but was educated on the science during their trip, both by the scienists and by courses she took online. Roughly seven weeks into their survey, at the age of sixty seven, she was informed that Gorvian had been killed in a battle which cost the USS Hapshepsut nearly its entire crew. Devastated, Riali dropped off the radar and disappeared for fifty years, which her closest comrades assumed were spent meditating and diving further into her studies.
Fifty years later, Riali was done with her solitude and aimless travels, knowing it was time to come back to her senses, instead of devoting her time to studies and schooling. Determined to feel alive again, she decided to take a break from science and try something new. Thus, for the next several years, she bounced between professions, from a dancer on Risa (not a very good one, but she learned) to a waitress on Earth, she tried everything she could in that period of time, but nothing called to her like the sciences.
Thus, twenty four years ago, she applied to Starfleet Academy, where she spent four years learning how to work upon a starship and the regulations that went along with it. Graduating, Dr. Deandres was assigned to a starship as an Ensign, where she would begin her journey as a Starfleet officer. Briefly, she was assigned to the expedition to Marchova, beneah Ishtar Nhamashal, a scientist now aboard the Olympic. However, after the adventure was complete, she returned to the fleet, where she still remains to this day, more than half her life ahead of her.. and hundreds of risks still to take.
