Biography:

Born to an affluent family in the floating city of Stratos, Siegfried was the only child of a wealthy and politically influential family. Abel’s maternal and paternal grandparents held high posts in both local and Federation politics, and they spared no expense in the education and raising of their children, Abel’s parents. An arraigned marriage brought Stovaan and Abel together, the result of which was Siegfried.

Raised in wealth and privileged, it was expected that Siegfried would follow in either his parent’s or grandparent’s footsteps and carry on the familial tradition and estates. In this expectation, he did not disappoint. Doing very well in his studies, he graduated with high honors from the Stratos Scientific Academy and was offered the opportunity to study at the Vulcan Science Academy. Here he did well, graduating on time as a Doctor of Emergency Medicine and Pathology. It was during the party to celebrate his graduation that Abel’s life would forever change.

During the celebration weekend, Abel was pulled aside by his estranged Uncle Cedric. Cedric was part of the family in name only, having made an anathema of himself many years before by eschewing the family’s desires and going off on his own. He had made a vast array of wealth and contacts, and it was these he leveraged into a sort of ‘reconciliation’ with the family. All of this was quite unknown to Siegfried, but his Uncle showed him evidence of his families narcissism and nepotism… and even borderline corruption. He also showed him evidence of their involvement in multiple ‘questionable’ endeavors that resulted in legal issues for others, but generated wealth for the family. Cedric didn’t want that for Siegfried, whom he knew to be intelligent and possessing of a desire to truly help people. He told the young man that if he didn’t get away soon, he would never have a say in his own life. Almost on cue, his father called to him to tell Siegfried that he was proud to announce that he would be starting a position in Strato’s most elite medical complex as head of the pathology department. His family “… had gone to great lengths to secure this for you, so always remember what we have done for you, son.” his father said in front of the entire Able and Stovaan families. Siegfried looked around at the assembled family, then at his Uncle Cedric. He lifted his glass and downed the champagne, set the glass to the side, and then said simply “No thank you. Goodbye.” and turned and walked out of the family estate. He has not returned since.

Dodging calls and communications from all sides, Siegfried finally decided that space was the only place he could go to get away from his familial machinations. He applied to Star Fleet Academy and was accepted before his family discovered what he had done. Requesting to be confined to the Academy grounds and to have no visitors for his tenure there, Siegfried sequestered himself away from anything not Academy related. He performed very well, and graduated with certifications in both Emergency Medicine and General and Orthopedic Surgery. That isn’t to say that he wasn’t bothered during his time. His family would routinely bribe Cadets to try and secure Abel’s attention, to the point he had to be careful about who he spoke to or studied with, lest his family make contact and try to coerce him back.

Graduating from the Academy, he was posted at Star Base 1 as a member of the medical staff. He enjoyed his time there, but kept requesting a ship assignment. Briefly assigned to the Academy as an Instructor, he was eventually assigned to the USS Odin as the Chief Medical Officer. He believed he was finally far enough away and isolated enough that his family wouldn’t bother him anymore. That was not to be the case.

A week after his arrival, Siegfried received a call. It was a communication from his mother and father. They had apparently been trying to reach him in order to tell him that they had resigned from public life… leaving their vast wealth to him. They told him that it was truly a shock to their system when he left, and they took stock of their past and what had happened. In a truly heartfelt apology, they insisted he take their family’s wealth and utilize as he saw fit. Stunned for sometime, Siegfried finally cobbled together a plan; and thus the SMT Foundation was born (see below).

Siegfried remained on the Odin for several years, but the ship was eventually decommissioned. Due to his work on board and his dedication to his crew, he was promoted to to Lieutenant Commander and given his choice of potential posts. After much thought, he chose to remain on ship duty and was named Chief Medical Officer of the USS Brian A. Olinski.

SMT (Sine Medicina Terminos; or Medicine Without Borders) Foundation is a multi-system, non-profit organization whose purpose is to provide medical and public health supplies, personnel, and support to anyone who needs it… in or out of the Federation. They specialize in bringing medicine to civilians in conflict areas, medical infrastructure development, training, policy advising, and public health program development. They are one of the few organizations of it’s kind; in that in addition to the non-profit and humanitarian endeavors, the Foundation has a robust and cutting edge Research and Development division. Anything they create is patented and trademarked… then either given for free or at cost to anyone who can make use of it. Large medical companies pay for access to patented technology or medicines on a lease basis, and that in turns generates additional revenue to support the humanitarian projects. And profit left over is distributed between R&D and any projects in need of additional support.

Try as Siegfried might, the money keeps not only coming in… but at faster rates of return the vast majority of the monies expended. This means that Dr. Siegfried Able is not only one of the largest philanthropists in the Federation… he is one of, if not the, wealthiest as well. A fact that he takes great pains to keep out of the common knowledge, fearing it would interfere with his work in Star Fleet. Other than a few close friends and his current and past Commanding Officers, there are only a few who know of Abel’s ‘extracurricular’ activities, and the vast majority of them are Admirals.
