Character Biography

Charlotte ‘Charlie’ Bailey was born in San Francisco whilst her father was stationed at Star-Fleet Headquarters. Her father Adam was an engineer and her mother Elena a botanist. When Charlie was 4 they moved to the Vega Colony when her father got a new posting. Her younger sister Mimi was born shortly after they arrived.

Charlie was a curious and artistic child, showing great aptitude for music, particularly the flute and violin.

In August 2235, when Charlie was 10, during a routine systems upgrade, Charlie’s father Adam made a critical mistake in his calculations and a catastrophic chain reaction led to an explosion which engulfed a large part of the nearby residential homes. Just on the edge of the blast radius, the Bailey family home was engulfed in fire. Charlie and her sister Mimi had been asleep on the far side of their house so were not injured in the initial blast and Charlie was able to get them both out to safety despite suffering burns to her hand and arm in their rescue. She was later commended for her bravery at such a young age. Sadly their mother Elena had been near the centre of the blast and died in the incident. Charlie’s father Adam barely survived the accident and had to be placed in a medically induced coma due to the severity of his wounds. He only learned of his wife’s death several months later when was finally stable enough to be revived. Realising his mistake had caused his wife’s death and left his children scarred and motherless, he suffered a mental breakdown and has been in a psychiatric establishment since.

Charlie and her sister went to live back on Earth with their Aunt Sara who was a civilian nurse. Charlie received such good care from Sara and the local doctors that she decided from the age of 11 that she also wanted to help people recover from injuries so devoted her life to the pursuit of medicine and began studying with Aunt Sara. Although she still visits her father when she is able to, she finds it increasingly difficult that she is unable to heal his mental health. Some days he barely recognises her any but Charlie still hopes that one day she will be able to help him regain himself.

Charlie entered starfleet academy soon after her 18th birthday despite her sister Mimi’s concerns. She worked hard and excelled in all her courses, showing exceptional skill in emergency medicine. She graduated at the top of her class. From the academy, Charlie went on to serve on the USS Constitution for her first posting as a junior doctor. She was quickly noticed by her superiors for her skill in diagnostics and for gentle and calming demeanour with patients. Charlie loved being part of a crew and for the first time since her childhood, she really felt as though she was part of a family again. She served for 3 years on the Constitution before taking another assignment on the USS Defiant as a trauma specialist. It was a hard decision for her to move on but her chief medical officer, Lt Mason, had encouraged her to spread her wings and reach her full potential. Charlie initially found it difficult to adjust to a new crew and ship as she had been so close to her previous crew mates but she slowly began to make friends and even rediscovered her love of music. She enjoyed her time on the Defiant but she didn’t quite connect with the crew as deeply as she had on her first ship and after 3 years, she was recommended to pursue a CMO position. When the posting on the Sentinel came up, Charlie felt it would be a good fit and put in for a transfer.

Charlie’s specialities include acute trauma & emergency medicine as well as microbiology and she has studied infectious diseases in great detail.

3rd June 2233: Charlie awarded young musician of the year and receives a music scholarship to Organa Musical Academy
30th August 2235: Mother Elena is killed in engineering explosion, father Adam sustains critical injuries and is placed in a medically induced coma and Charlie receives 3rd degree burns to her left hand and arm escaping the blaze with her younger sister
20th September 2235: Charlie & Mimi move back to Earth to live with their Aunt Sara
12th November 2235: Charlie awarded a Civilian Service Commendation for her bravery and quick thinking in saving herself and her sister
2nd December 2235: Charlie’s father Adam is awoken from his coma and learns the extent of the accident, he is subsequently moved to the Carrington Psychiatric Institute where he has remained since
September 2236: Charlie makes the decision to study medicine and starts studying anatomy with Aunt Sara
September 2243: Enters Starfleet academy to study medicine
July 2246: Graduates top of her class in medicine and assigned to USS Constitution
May 2249: Reassigned to USS Defiant as trauma specialist doctor
Mar 2252: Assigned to USS Sentinel as Chief Medical Officer
