Before the term started I had in mind that it could be beneficial for the membership to have some discussions in Command that didn’t have the high-stakes feel of debating rule changes. I thought this would be a timely moment start one of these discussions as we just had a brand new CO appointed and with two more CO vacancies needing to be filled it’s possible he won’t be the only one taking a crack at being a CO for the first time in the near future.

What is one piece of advice you have for a new captain? I’m imagining that the responses could be beneficial to several of our members, perhaps even those who have some CO experience already.

I suppose I better start this off. Come up with expectations you want to have for the crew and have all current and future crew members agree to them. In the future, if someone disappoints you it gives you something to go back to and discuss with them. It’s hard for people to avoid falling short if they’re not told what they should try to do in the first place.

–Don’t be the “Super” captain that can do everything. As much as I love James Kirk, he was a super captain. Don’t go on every away mission. Allow your crew to take center stage sometimes and allocate jobs to the different departments! ~~Terry

I love what each of you have already said so far!

I’ll add that when you become a CO, you ought to learn how to be discerning. Discernment is an entire topic in itself, but to keep it brief, I’ve learned that some people need a gentle nudge, some people need help with some creativity, and others won’t require any assistance at all. There is a lot more to that than just what I’ve listed, but the key here is to be mindful of the needs of your crew. When you are aware of what your people need, you have the ability to lead by helping.

Hope that helps! I look forward to reading what other COs share as well! :D

I have always thought that one takes on the CO spot one becomes a mentor to all the crew that they serve. They are a mentor the XO, DHs and junior officers. As Tony and Adam have said, a CO must teach and offer help. In this way they teach those below them so that they can learn to lead one day themselves.
