STF Yearbook Discussion

Posted Jan. 14, 2019, 5:26 p.m. by Rear Admiral Daniel Lerner (Personnel Director) (Daniel Lerner)

I just want to summarize where the Yearbook discussion has been left at, and maybe make one or two comments on what has been said so far.

Here’s where I think the consensus was:

1) Agreement to stop actively maintaining the Yearbook (and I infer there is therefore agreement to amend the PDept bylaw to remove the Yearbook section).

2) The PDept should export all (really, all? - see my comments below) the content to be hosted (by STF’s library? - see my comments below).

I want to make sure there is agreement to export everything. Right now, the Yearbook consists of:

  • Non-photo images. This is generally when instead of uploading a photo of themselves, the person uploaded an image related to their STF animal nickname, or uploaded some kind of avatar (like a South Park image).
  • Images of current members. Some of them are... interesting... and maybe not what people what to be remembered by :P
  • Images of former members. This includes members who were in the club for a month or two, members who were in the club for decades, members that just left, and members who passed away (either while a member or after they left).
  • Photos from STF-related events

So unless I hear otherwise, I’ll arrange to have everything listed above exported.

In terms of where the pictures should go afterwards, I heard one suggestion of the library. Was that in reference to our actual STF library (which I think Joe needs to weigh in on because (a) he’s the librarian and (b) I’m given to understand the library is not in a position to host images), or was that a reference to our /images folder in STF (which I think TECH should weigh in on)? It’s a lot of images. Also, given the concerns raised earlier in this conversation about not letting the photos on social media, our images file is accessible my anyone (not just members) and has less protections than Facebook (which I raise because some are concerned about the lack of privacy with Facebook). I should probably add that the current Yearbook has less protections than Facebook and is accessible to the public as a whole…

So if I could just get some clarification of where this part of the discussion is headed, that would be very helpful.

-Daniel
