Notes about mail forwards

Everyone,

As of this moment, mail forwards are currently up to date for all people who have been appointed thusfar. I would like to take a moment to remind you all about some facts about the mail forwards, that everyone should already know, but maybe some of you haven’t heard before:

  • When your appointment is declared in Command, TECH will use whatever email address you have listed on your profile as the address that mail should be forwarded to. It is your responsibility to ensure that the email address on your user profile is always up to date. If you change your email address while you are assigned to a forward, please let TECH know that the forward needs to be updated, as the forwards do not read off of user profiles at this time.
  • Until you have named someone as your assistant, or until the President names someone new for your job, mail will continue to go to whoever the previous holder of the forward was. That’s because that person still technically has that job until a replacement is named.
  • The email forward addresses have been publicly listed on the internet for over 20 years. As a result, they get an extremely large amount of spam. Some of that spam is vulgar and almost all of it is fraudulent. We at TECH cannot control the spam that comes through the forwards, because there is no mail filtering scheme that we can implement that will work with perfect accuracy given that these addresses have been listed publicly for so long and are in so many spam bot address books.
  • The only solution to all of this spam that TECH can implement that is guaranteed to work is to shut down the mail forwards completely and replace them with some other system for sending messages to official people in the government. This is actually on our roadmap, but it’s still a ways off, and it’s not something we’re going to do without a lot of advance public warning first, as it would be obviously very disruptive.

That’s all I have to say about that at this time. If you have any questions feel free to ask.

– Joe
