Steve and James would like to put forth the following as their updated proposal. Thanks to Daniel for continuing to be abused for his love of legalese.

Current Wording:

“The Fleet Commander must be a current or former CO of the fleet in question, or a current or former XO in the fleet in question with CO experience. The Assistant Fleet Commander must be a current or former CO or XO of the fleet in question.”

Original Proposal:

“The Fleet Commander must be a current or former CO within STF, or a current or former XO within STF, with Assistant Fleet Command experience and a member rank of Captain or above. The Assistant Fleet Commander must be a current or former CO or XO within STF.”

Updated Proposal:

“The Fleet Commander must be a current or former CO within STF. The Assistant Fleet Commander must be a current or former CO or XO within STF. Notwithstanding the foregoing, the President may appoint a Fleet Commander who is only a current or former XO within STF on the condition that an Assistant Fleet Commander is appointed who is a current or former CO within STF.”

I have a question.

This discussion has been going on for how long now? Both the overall discussion and the specific discussion about the FComm’s responsibilities.

We have five FComms. This discussion directly affects them. We are literally discussing what they’re responsibilities are, what might have changed, and whether what has changed is acceptable or not.

Three of the five FComms haven’t even posted anything.

The remaining two posted very early on what their understanding of the FComms responsibilities are. (Steve Sigle wrote “…you just need to know how to run the admin page and read Fleet Command and Other Mundane Matters (FComm) to know your powers you are in charge of.” Kate O’Neill wrote: “…I feel it is far more important to trust the people of my fleet to know what is best for their ships. Yes while I do have the final say, I would never presume to know what a crew needs as a command staff or GM storyline… [It] seems ridiculous to me and borders on arrogance to think I would ever know better than the Captain of their own ship. Being FComm should not be a position where people come to seek approval for things but one where the sole focus is to improve the role enjoyment for the fleet.”) Suffice it to say, if that’s the only responsibilities needed for an FComm, Joe has posted a separate proposal to just phase out FComms all together and face all the problems that would bring (including, I would suggest, the end of a successful 28 years as a healthy role-playing club.)

How come we have barely heard anything at all from the current FComms??

Daniel

You haven’t heard from me because I haven’t had an issue with what has been proposed. I am very much in favor with having the ‘be a present or past CO of the Fleet’ section taken out so we can widen our FComm/AFComm pool. I would argue that I agree that they do need to have been at least of CO level as I do not think that most XO’s would have enough experience to understand the nuances of being an FComm. That is my personal opinion though and I am not saying that there are not exceptions to this rule.

Automating the process would not be an advisable option though as most of my FComm work is done one on one with various command staff. A lot of my time is spent with speaking to them by either email or in Discord to address ship/crew concerns or offer advice. None of which could be automated. Making a ‘how to’ for the position is possible, and perhaps advisable, but I find that actually teaching a new AFComm, hands on, works the best as they can actually see how the FComm role is handled one on one with the command staff of the Fleet in addressing concerns and issues. It is how I prefer to teach a new AFComm.
