In the proposal about bringing back the COiT program, a couple of different methods of mentorship in STF were identified: mentorship through the CO-XO relationship and mentorship through the Command Mentorship Program. To continue that discussion, we have some questions for everyone here. While we could certainly follow up in DMs or what not, we think it’s important for this discussion to occur transparently in Command so that the entire community can be aware of the experiences people are having. That said, if you are uncomfortable posting your answers in Command, we welcome you to email us at exec@star-fleet.com.

Command Mentorship Program

  • Are you a mentor for a position in the program?

No.

  • If you are a mentor, have you mentored someone through the program? What did that relationship look like?
  • If you are not a mentor, why not?
  • At the time the call came out for mentors in that program, I had far too many other responsibilities in STF to take that on. The program kind of disappeared off my radar since then.

  • Have you utilized the program to get a mentor?
  • No.

  • If you have utilized it, what did the relationship look like between you and your mentor? Was it helpful?
  • If you haven’t utilized it, why not? Who has supported you as you’ve taken a new position in STF?
  • CO-XO Relationship

    • If you’re an experienced CO (e.g. more than one year of experience as the CO in the club), do you have a newer XO or a more experienced one? How did you make the decision one way or another?

I’m not a current CO, but I would consider myself to be a former “experienced CO”. I’ve done both. It depends on a number of circumstances, including the health of the ship and how active I can be. However, over time I generally try to go for newer XOs where possible.

  • If you’re an experienced XO, do you have a newer CO or a more experienced one? How has the responsibility behind your position changed depending on that dynamic?
  • If you’re a newer CO, how has your XO supported you learning the ropes of your position?
  • If you’re a newer XO, how has your CO supported you learning the ropes of your position and potentially a future CO position?
  • For any COs, if you have an opening in your XO slot, what do you do to find a new one?
  • I’ll look at the people I know in the club who don’t have XO spots, plus I’ll ask other COs and FComms if they have any recommendations. Because of my level of experience, I would usually look at up and coming DHs. A long, long, long time ago I would also check the recommendations page, back when we had it. I also look at the XO course grads. I don’t think I’ve ever opened an XO spot to applications.

  • For any FComms, if you have an opening in your fleet for a new CO, what does your process look like?
  • I will often start with asking fellow FComms and others for recommendations. Usually there are a few XOs who have shown they are ready, or people who have made the “short list” so to speak. Recommendations play a huge role for me. As president, I would also encourage FComms to take a look at the graduates from the CO course, especially when considering someone relatively new. In more recent times I have opened it up to applications as that is a direction the club has gone in. However, I find sometimes that the people best suited for the role aren’t always the ones who apply, so I don’t just rely on applications.
