Starfleet Academy Report - September 2020

USS Challenger

Commanding Officer: Sarah Hemenway

Crew Posting Level: 8
Senior Staff Posting Level: 7
Overall Ship Health: 7

Ship Status: The Challenger is ticking along well this month. We celebrated graduation, with three cadets graduating and heading to the main fleet, one cadet remaining as a DH, and one cadet remaining as CNS (he’s a former member). We should be finishing up with our sim wrap up here shortly and then heading into the new sim pretty quickly after that since we still have a pretty full complement of cadets.

Spotlight: Our new CNS, Nathan Miller, has been fantastic stepping up to help out with the ship. We were so sad to say good bye to Ben Z as RL steals him away from us.

Vacancies:

Executive Officer: Daniel Lerner

Crew Posting Level: 7
Senior Staff Posting Level: 8
Overall Ship Health: 8

Ship Status: A few more AWOL reminders in September is why the posting level isn’t as high as it could be.

September saw a number of graduations: Ophelia Smith, Jason Wolfe, Nathan Miller, Ava Henson, and Keiron Hoult. Keiron graduated to COS, so we are giving a fond farewell to Sam Stroud. Nathan Miller, who is a returning member, was appointed as the new Counselor, replacing Ben Z who was looking to make some changes. It was a big goodbye for Ben, who has been on the Challenger continuously for the last 18 months as a cadet, then a DH, and then the Counselor. Another change includes Kat Dedul joining as the new CMO, replacing our outgoing CMO, Nicole C.

We also had some new cadets join us in September. After taking into account our graduations and new placements, oOur total number of cadets at the end of September was 6 cadets.

The sim is wrapping up, and should be over in the first week of October.

Plans for October include new tips for DHs, including seeing how we can get cadets into the main sim faster, and avoiding a check-in thread lasting three months…

Spotlight: Nathan Miller. Nathan came into the counselor role with a bang. He has already stepped in as a special mentor to one of our cadets that needed a bit of extra support - and we’re already seeing great results there. Nathan is also doing a great job making sure check-in threads aren’t getting accidentally missed, and helping the new cadets build their characters through their counselor check-in posts.

Vacancies:

Gamemaster: Geoff Joosten

Crew Posting Level: 8
Senior Staff Posting Level: 8
Overall Ship Health: 8

Sim Overview: Sim just completed and as of the writing of the report plans for the next one are underway. We just graduated a bunch of cadets so I am waiting for the dust to clear before kicking off the next one. It shouldn’t be too long.

Spotlight: All of our wonderful graduates who are off to the main fleet!

FComm’s Comments: Challenger had a pretty good month! We had a round of graduations which included two cadets staying on as Challenger Staff. I’m overall very pleased with how it’s going. Looking forward to Geoff’s wild new sim!

Mentor Coordinator’s Report:

How many active mentors in the club? 15

How many active mentoring assignments at the date of report writing? Approximately 4 - any that I have not heard back on that were pending from 2019 or earlier are presumed to be closed, there were a few recent assignments that I need to update, so if necessary I will add a supplementary comment or amend in November’s report.

What ships currently have no active mentors? * USS Brian A. Olinski * USS Wolverine

All ships named in last month’s report (including the two here) were e-mailed noting the lack of a mentor with an ask to help me identify a potential mentor. Most responded (though one person who became a mentor happened to cover multiple ships), but the two above did not.

Any problems that must be addressed
None at this time. I do need to update the spreadsheet to account for some recent assignments and mentor additions, but if a change affects the above numbers I will report as such in a follow-up.
