INTRO

So, as many of you know we threw together a survey to gauge the interest of the club in different kinds of events and activities. These were things we had in our project plan and other things we wanted to add or needed feedback on to know whether or not we should continue them.

This report is to not only give the results of this survey, but also how we are interpreting those results. That interpretation will determine our plans going forward. There will of course be consultation with others as needed and we are always open to further ideas and suggestions. These results also do not include what myself and Silke are able to contribute to any one project.

NOTE: I fully recognize that it is possible to misinterpret what some of these results are saying (mostly with the ‘maybe’ answers), but I am basing this on years of events work in the club and knowing what people most commonly are or aren’t willing to do. Most often a ‘maybe’ answer is really a no.

RESULTS

A total of 23 people responded to the survey.

Short Story Competition

Q: Are you interested in participating in a Short Story Competition?

Yes- (4) 17.4%
No- (8) 34.8%
Maybe- (11) 47.8%

Q: Are you interested in being a panelist for a Short Story Competition?

Yes- (10) 43.5%
No- (8) 34.8%
Maybe- (5) 21.7%

Interpretation:
There are not enough people who said yes to necessarily run the competition. My experience with this is that we need several more than that to make having panelists and a short list worthwhile. But, we will reach out to those that said ‘maybe’ to figure out what circumstances would make them say yes. With that information we can make a final decision, but at this moment I am leaning towards not running the short story competition.

Workshop

Q: Are you interested in participating in Ten Forward and/or Discord based events if available?

Yes- (11) 47.8%
No- (2) 8.7%
Maybe- (10) 43.5%

Q: Would you be interested in hosting/helping to host a discussion or ‘Masterclass’ in Ten Forward?

Yes- (5) 21.7%
No- (7) 30.4%
Maybe- (11) 47.8%

Q: Would you be interested in hosting a live panel in Voice Chat in our Discord Server?

Yes- (5) 21.7%
No- (12) 52.2%
Maybe- (6) 26.1%

Interpretation:

While I would love more people to help run sessions, we have just enough to do some and a lot of people who are interested in participating. I think this will be a fun event and will be at the top of the list of things we organize.

STF Audio Dramas

Q: Would you listen to these dramatized audio versions of our stories?

Yes- (13) 56.5%
No- (4) 17.4%
Maybe- (6) 26.1%

Q: Would you be interested in being a part of the dramatization team? (ie. be a character and read their part)

Yes-(9) 39.1%
No-(8) 34.8%
Maybe- (6) 26.1%

Q: Would you be able/willing to lend technical expertise to the production team?

Yes- (3) 13%
No- (13) 56.6%
Maybe- (7) 30.4%

Interpretation:

The lack of technical expertise does not surprise me, but I think including Silke and I we have enough people to create a technical team to support the large interest for doing audio dramas. We’re going to put together a planning team to start working out the nitty gritty of this project.

Bookclub

Q: Would you be interested in reading a book club selection and discussing it with other members?

Yes- (10) 43.5%
No-(7) 30.4%
Maybe- (6) 26.1%

Q: Would you be willing to help organize a monthly read and discussion topics?

Yes- (5) 21.7%
No- (12) 52.2%
Maybe- (6) 26.1%

Q: If you’ve shown interest in participating in previous book club offerings, but did not participate, why? (optional)

5 answers:

-Probably lost track of time, but I love reading!
-I became overwhelmed with things, usual for me.
-I haven’t had time
-I’m new.
-I didn’t have the time to actually do the reading because I was overwhelmed at work

Interpretation:

It is worth trying the book club again, and we have some idea about how to run it so it’s as flexible as possible. This includes doing monthly themes, rather than just a specific book, and also having a rotating person who runs the discussion each month.

Social Media and Ten Forward Board

Q: Regardless of past participation, are you interested in participating in any of our Flash Fiction Fridays?

Yes- (9) 39.1%
No- (8) 34.8%
Maybe- (6) 26.1%

Interpretation:

There is enough interest that Silke and I will continue to do Flash Fiction Fridays as often as we personally are able. We are looking at ways to automate this a bit, at least on social media.

Other Questions

We also asked for feedback and suggestions. Some of which we are either already doing or have in the works, and the rest we will take into consideration as we go along. The main takeaways from those are:

-making events as inclusive time-zone wise as possible
-advertising events better (especially for those that don’t use our social media platforms)
-the club membership should help spread word about events to each other as well

OVERALL INTERPRETATION

There seems to be more interest in the events and activities we had planned than we initially thought. Much of that could just be the unique difficulties this year has presented, or maybe it has to do with more newer members showing interest. Probably a combo of the two.

Running regular events or organizing activities can take a lot of time and energy and it is my hope that we can spread the workload out more so it’s not just the same people taking on that burder. Many people (including myself) can’t do that on a long term basis so the more we can share this workload, the better off the club will be in general.

For all the rest of the feedback, we will reach out to those who have offered to run events, and we will also reach out to those that indicated we could about their direct involvement in the various events we have planned.

Thank you to everyone who took the time to fill out the survey. Your feedback is invaluable and has helped give us clarity about where we are at and what people want in general.

If you are interested in doing more direct work with the Community & Events team, please reach out to me!!

Linds, I honestly don’t remember if I participated in this survey or not. If not, I would like to add that I would be interested in taking part in the audio dramatization as well as helping out technically. I have worked in radio for many years and have some skills using audio recording/editing programs (adobe Audition, Cool edit Pro, Wavepad Sound Editor), so put me down as a yes!!

Terry

DITTO. I’ve got audio experience and would be willing.
Dave
