Hello, everyone!

We discussed this briefly amongst the Cabinet, but I’d like to hear the greater club membership’s thoughts on this matter. Historically, the President has opted to relax posting limits throughout the club for at least the last two weeks of December with an understanding that people may be busier than expected with holiday gatherings. This year is a little different in that holiday celebrations are likely to be lonelier as we all (hopefully) limit our contact with people outside our households to help prevent the spread of COVID-19. With that in mind, I imagine that people might enjoy being able to count on their fellow role-players to either be participating actively or using the LOA system to make known that they will be unavailable.

My proposal is as follows:

  • Posting limits will not be relaxed club-wide.
  • COs are empowered to relax their ship-specific posting limits for the period of December 15, 2020 to January 1, 2021 if they choose, but it is discouraged.
  • All members will be encouraged to utilize the LOA system to let their fellow RPers know when they will be unavailable.

I’d love to hear any feedback, whether in favor or against this thought.

Sarah
President

All I know is I will be on Annual Leave from 21st December to 15th January and for about a week of that time I will be one street away from the beach front at Scarborough and the last thing on my mind will be doing anything online while there. :D Instead I’ll be walking the beach, sleeping, reading and eating and just being. Oh and watching cricket on tv, because its Summer in Australia.

Of course, if I should win the lotto between now and then, Annual Leave will turn into an ongoing holiday …

PS I also note for a small handful of us, these aren’t Winter Holidays.

Woops, fixed season typo

Russell

You’re absolutely correct and that’s what I get for multitasking.

I assume your intent is to declare a LOA, though, right? Posting limits being relaxed only would affect people who don’t declare one.

Sarah

Oh yes, I’ll be declaring a LOA, most definitely, I have lots of practice doing so. Looking forward to the (hoped for) lack of so many LOAs from me next year.

Oh, and for anyone who does not know, to declare a LOA, click on your profile in the menu bar beneath the STF Logo/Chevron and on the screen that comes up click on the ‘Edit my Profile/Declare a LOA’ button. Then click the ‘LOA’ checkbox, select the date that you’ll be returning and include a reason if you so desire. Don’t forget to select submit at the bottom of that screen and there you go, you’re on LOA until you return!

Don’t forget on your return to go back to your ‘Profile’ page and untick LOA checkbox - otherwise you’ll have a delightful asterisk/star next to your number of days since last post. Then select submit and you’re ready to post (or do the washing) on your return from your LOA.

(snip) to Russ’ awesome guide on LOA declaring

Hi everyone,

Thank you for taking the time to provide your thoughts and insights regarding relaxing the holiday post limits. I’ve seen a lot of good reasons presented in the original discussion in #cabinet, but to be honest, I’m not seeing a lot to offset that here. The simple fact is that all we’re asking for is communication with people who may, more than normal, be counting on interactions in STF to make their winter season a little less dreary this year. Historically, the relaxation of posting limits made more sense when it wasn’t trivial to declare a LOA and then continue to post (you had to check an extra box or it would unflag you and it was a huge pain in the tush). I hear that people are concerned with things popping up, and so I think this is a reasonable compromise:

  • There will not be a club-wide relaxation of posting limits.
  • No one will be removed from a position due to AWOL between December 21, 2020 and January 4, 2021.
  • Declaring a LOA if you anticipate that your holiday season will be too busy to allow your regular posting schedule is still encouraged. Please consider your fellow STF members and that it is important to them to know if they can count on you to be participating during this two week period.

I love the idea of a holiday ship and thank you, Russ, for jumping on getting that started. Given the goal of this conversation is to keep people’s STF routines in place if possible, I don’t think that encouraging people to post on an X-Fleet ship instead of their regular ships is quite the right idea, but I love the creative idea to give people maybe somewhere additional and special to post will help make the season a little brighter.

I agree that an X-Fleet ship isn’t the best place for such a proposal, but I’m not sure where else in the club would make sense for it, unless we can have an area similar to the election ship opened for the period of mid-late December to early January each year for that purpose … or maybe 10 forward could be the basis for it.

Sarah
President

Why did you want people’s feedback? Didn’t we just have ten people unanimously agree that this was a poor idea? I don’t get it.

Adam W.

I’m also interested in an answer to Adam’s question. Also, the following part no longer seems to be an option, is that the case?:

  • COs are empowered to relax their ship-specific posting limits for the period of December 15, 2020 to January 1, 2021 if they choose, but it is discouraged.

Thank you Sarah.

Russell

I must agree, why ask these questions at all if there is no plan to follow through with what people wanted. Seems a waste of people’s time if opinions won’t be taking into account.

~Steven Sigle

Also, as a side note “No one will be removed from a position due to AWOL between December 21, 2020 and January 4, 2021. ” this is essentially making it so there will be relaxed posting limits. That was the whole point of declaring them relaxed, is that we wouldn’t be removing AWOL people during this time.

Why go through the effort of saying we are not going to declare a club-wide relaxation but for all intents and purposes do still do it? I guess I am confused on the pretense here, as we are basically declaring, without declaring, there are no posting limits. Seems, very weird and backward.

~Steven Sigle

I would also like an answer to o Adam’s question. If there was never any intention from the Exec to do so, this was just a waste of everyone’s time.

Fkeet Captain James Sinclair

I am confused as to why your proposal seems to not be a proposal of what the club needs and more of an unofficial edict? The assurance that “No one will be removed from a position due to AWOL between December 21, 2020 and January 4, 2021” feels a bit more grinch-like than the family spirit of STF when compared to the presidential statement from last year. The reassurance you won’t lose your position indicates that unless it was stated, that could have been a possibility. Stating specifically that you “won’t be removed” just means why bother doing anything because nothing will happen if you ignore posting during that period, ie things are now relaxed so post when you can.

If my response is confusing it is to just ask why this proposal was mentioned in the first place when nothing changes except the wording to make it seem like a new and fresh idea? Relaxed posting is not a new idea. The new proposal is just rearranged words to make a simple tradition confusing and wordy but achieves the same end result. If not please explain to me how it is different. The only fresh concept was Sharon’s proposal for a holiday ship which Tribble has helped to get the ball rolling.

Kate O’Neill

If there were ever a year to relax posting limits around the holidays, this would be it.

Ben Z

I agree with the others… putting these two together seems a bit ridiculous…

  • There will not be a club-wide relaxation of posting limits.
  • No one will be removed from a position due to AWOL between December 21, 2020 and January 4, 2021.

If there’s NO relaxations, then AWOLs will count. If there is no consequences for AWOL then obviously, there is a relaxed posting limit. Sooooo why are we even bothering with the first line at all? Seems like there was no point in posting this thread to begin with.
