Academy Report - January 2021

Academy Ship Report
USS Challenger

Commanding Officer’s Report
Submitted by Sarah Hemenway

Crew posting level: 7
Senior staff posting level: 6
Overall ship health: 7

Ship status:
The Challenger is humming along. We’ve spent much of the month getting through graduation, including the likely promotion of two graduating cadets to DHs (something that always makes me super excited to begin to work with new people). I’d like to get activity a little higher from the command and senior staffs next month; I ended up sick and I know the senior staff had assorted things come up, but our new, awesome DHs will continue to challenge us to be as awesome as they are. ?

Spotlight(s):
I went a little different with the graduation theme this time around and it’s been fun to see what people do with it. Take a look at the thread here: https://www.star-fleet.com/core/acad/challenger/posts/115385/.

Vacancies:
If you’re interested in serving as a DH if we have an opening, please feel free to send me an email and I’ll add you to my list. ?

Executive Officer’s Report
Submitted by Daniel Lerner

Crew posting level: 7
Senior staff posting level: 8
Overall ship health: 8

Ship status:
How are the DHs and JOs doing? Is everyone active and participating, both in the main sim and in any side sims?
Overall, things remain unchanged in this area since December, and our cadets and DHs are still posting regularly. The main sim finished, but there has been a lot of activity with side sims and the graduation thread.
Who is the shining star this month?
I don’t want to single anyone out this month - all cadets are working hard.
Griffin Day graduated this month and was kept as the new Chief Engineer. (Steve, who was playing the Chief Engineer, is now the new Chief Science Officer.)
Although this technically happened on February 3rd, not in January, the decision was made in January so I’ll mention it here. Callie L. graduated from the Academy and was kept as the new Chief Medical Officer.
Finally, on this theme, Kieron Hoult, who had just finished his first sim as the COS, was promoted to full Lieutenant as per the CADET bylaw, as he is no longer a graduated cadet but a DH being kept on for another sim.

Crew posting level: 9
Senior staff posting level: 9
Overall ship health: 8

Sim overview:
1- Summarize the sim plot so far as if you were providing it to a new member joining the ship.
The sim has just started! One Admiral Buress has asked the that the crew go investigate the Valakis system.
2- Who was the biggest contributor this month to driving the sim forward?
Big shout out to our two newest DHs!

Spotlight(s): Griffin Day and Callie L

FComm’s Comments: With a new sim, some new DHs to mentor the new cadets the challenger is once more on their next exciting journey. There’s a lot to be proud of with this ship and having been reading it over the last month it’s amazing to see the collaboration and supportive way that new players are encouraged to become involved and develop their skills with slightly more experienced players having room to develop and grow too. The ship has a positive buzz about it which I really enjoy.

Thank you to everyone involved on the ship and with the crew mentors who work so hard.

Mentors Co-Ordinator Report
Submitted by Sharon Miller:

This month was really just about me settling into the mentors co-ordinator role, going through the work done by Thomas and discussing where we should go with the mentors program from here.
First order of business was to help redesign the Academy MOTD’s, including listing both command and mainstream mentors on the Academy Campus MOTD. If everyone who believes they are currently a mentor could please have a quick check of these lists and let me know if anything is incorrect then I would appreciate it massively.
For February I plan to reach out to all of the currently active mentors/mentees to see how things are going. As part of Thomas’s survey, we also gathered several good suggestions from club members on things they’d like to see being done with the mentors program and also resources they would like to have available, so I plan to start some discussions around adoption of a few of these ideas.

Update from the Academy Fleet Liaison Officer
This month Owen has gone through the Academy Static pages and the graduates list to ensure these are up to date. The pages are now done and the lists are a work in progress but should be updated in full in the next week or so.

Academy Courses

Staffing wise, we welcomed James Sinclair to the Security course tutor role this month.

Also we undertook a mass revamp project at the start of the month to look at each of the department courses in turn and start updating them. At present each department course has now been rewritten and is with the respective course tutors for vetting and for a new exam to be constructed.

The Security and Counselling courses have been vetted and are completed. They are now in their final checks and vetting stage. Huge thank you to James and Tyra for their help with this.

We also started a discussion on the rewards of sitting and passing the courses. This will be more detailed in next months report.

I have also started to update the Admin course and have some exciting prospects at some new courses we are looking to potentially add which includes a new member/ cadet course, a Marine specific swing course and a ship spec designer course. All of which are at various stages of the planning and implementation phase. Huge thank you to James Sinclair, Nick Villareal and Sarah Hemenway for your thoughts and ideas and work on these so far.

Moving forward the plan over the next month is to look at completing the other courses and switch old for new on the academy pages.

Ship Graduates:

Huge congratulations to everyone!

Overall comments: Well it’s been a bit of a busy month for the Academy, with our ship going strong we have started to turn our attention to the other aspects of what we have to offer. There’s a lot of fun things under review and discussion just now which we will be able to update on next month. In particular the courses and the mentors program.

We have done some spring cleaning and have a lovely new motd for our main academy page and our Campus Board. Huge thank your to the wonderful Sharon for this. (Some of the new images I broke, Joe is helping me fix them!) The pages will be completed by next month and fully up to date I hope.

I have also sent out a request to Fleet Commanders to ask them to check in with each fleet command teams to give us an overview of the mentors in their fleet. I’m waiting to hear back from them to ensure our current list is up to date. Please if you want to be a mentor get in touch with myself, Joe or Sharon.

Finally our club hand book has had a bit of an update too, with thanks to David Eades and is ready to be vetted as well.

It’s a busy time in the academy, and we want you to be involved. Please get in touch if you’d like to help, be involved, suggest some things or weigh in in our current discussion in command.

The campus board is open and willing to entertain suggestions, discussion or, why not grab a friend and take a side sim break over there with some old academy characters and have a little reunion thread? You never know what inspiration may strike. Just make sure you label the posts as IC otherwise who knows what we may think you’re suggesting! Dear me! The point is get involved.

The Academy Adventures of the Mysterious Aquatic D

We join our hero, the mysterious Aquatic D as a young cadet hot on the heels of a renegade shuttle craft and another cadet gone rogue. Our young hero, grizzled-in-training, was supposed to pilot the Shuttle Bobegnops to a local aquatic planet and base Mottob Inikib to collect the famous marine biologist Edward Squid and his assistant Patrick. However in an interesting change of plans he finds that a fellow cadet Has defected to the side of a new marine terrorist cell who call themselves PlAnkt’n, stolen the shuttle and posing as our hero plans to kidnapp the professor. With no time to wait for back up or more experienced officers the young hero does the only thing he can, he gives chase. In hot pursuit and hoping to reach the rendezvous point before the other cadet does.

Will he make it…will he be reprimanded if he does, what will happen if he doesn’t! Stay tuned for next months instalment of the The Academy Adventures of the Mysterious Aquatic D!

The Academy January report. Brought to you by the colour Pink and the letter S

No professors, cadets or course tutors were harmed in the making of this report. One mentors coordinator come MOTD designer and a Vice Commandant did get mildly singed when the Commandant tried to trim big images using fire, but no one liked that couch anyway…
