USCM - Chapter 1 Section 1 - Generations - WIP

Ok so since the sentiment seems to be running towards somewhat optimistic curiosity with no major objections posted at this stage, I figured I would just forge on a head and release the foundations of the new system a section at a time for discussion.

The USCM is in the vein of assembling a D&D character laid out in a overview manner of all the sections and then if necessary further detailed chapters providing greater depth and detail. For this foundational overview approach I’m just going to lay out the overview and then once everyone has had a chance to look at it, we can get to some more nuts and bolts numbers and math.

I want to stress this is a WIP, and when/where we come up with better implimentations or better ideas I’m happy to use them. Ok enough of that and onto the good stuff.

The USCM overcomes the issue of spec designs not being compatible with post TNG canon, technology and designs by changing out crew size for design generation as it’s overarching means of design classification. By doing so, we can create a linear ordered system that specifies a specific range of values for specific eras based upon canonical classes. These generations line up roughly with the various historical periods.

So how do we do this? Well, simply we designate the “flagship” or premier ship of the generation as the quinessential example of that design generation as a baseline to anchor our system off.

So By Generation we have

  1. NX - ENT era
  2. Constitution - TOS Era
  3. Excelsior - Movie Era
  4. Ambassador - Post Original Movie Era
  5. Galaxy - TNG Era
  6. Sovereign - TNG Movie Era
  7. Odyssey - 2401 Era

These ships, yes are canonical CBS properties and I’m not suggesting we utilise their IP in any way. What I am suggesting with generations is we can derive some standardised values from the fact that they are essentially the pinnacle or premier examples of starfleet technology in their respective generations.

For example, we can take the stated dimensions of an NX class and through a specific formula determine it’s volume. The spec also states the mass of the space frame. We now have a baseline for that era to which we can start comparing as the NX was the most advanced class of her time.
