Robert Archer has sent in another revision to his Baker-class Heavy (Support) Observer. This vessel is designed for support purposes only, and therefore is for NPC use. As such, current and former GMs are particularly invited to review the design, although any input whatsoever is welcome.

The review will remain open until 5 September 2020.

HISTORY AND MISSION OVERVIEW

In the year 2360 Starfleet was a hive of expanding activity with the launch of the Galaxy class explorers and Nebula class cruisers. There were so few of these ships that Starfleet put out a call for refitting of older designs to fill the gap until new ship building could catch up with demands.

Originally the Baker class had been produced in moderate numbers in the late 2290s. At the time their purpose was to be a sturdier option to the more vulnerable Oberth class, while still retaining a core scientific focus beyond what traditional multi-purpose designs like the Constitution, Miranda, Mariner, Excelsior and Constellation classes had to offer. The class, like many such ships of this time period, were was found to be rugged and extend beyond the original service life envisioned when the class was first laid down. As such in the late 2330s the Baker class underwent a small scale refit and expansion of existing space frames.

Small singular/plural disagreement there. Nothing that can’t be fixed in the final markup.

To answer the call once again in the 2360s, the aged Baker class ships still in use in secondary roles within the Federation were refitted to more modern standards to allow the class a larger exploration presence on the frontier. Shipyards throughout the Federation refit these aged vessels. By the dawning of 2365 the pilot launched Baker class heavy observer, USS Baker NCC 6666, saw the return of this venerable scientific class to service along all known borders, as well as supplementing frontier exploration efforts throughout the Federation.

No other major issues here.

MISSION PROFILE

Okay.

STRUCTURE AND CONSTRUCTION

This still works.

SCIENCE AND REMOTE SENSING SYSTEMS

SNIP. Okay.

WARP PROPULSION SYSTEMS

SNIP. Okay.

IMPULSE PROPULSION SYSTEMS

SNIP. Okay.

TACTICAL SYSTEMS

SNIP. Okay.

Phaser Systems

SNIP. This is clear enough to understand the phaser placement now.

Torpedo Systems

SNIP. Okay.

COMMAND AND SUPPORT SYSTEMS

Bridge

The Baker class bridge is located on Deck 1. It is arranged in a circular shape. The bridge is equipped with easy modular setup for refits, repairs and replacement as needed. The aft end of the bridge contains 4 auxiliary consoles for miscellaneous personnel needs. Centered along a railing aft of the Commanding Officer’s chair, from port to starboard are the combined tactical/security console, two science consoles and a communications console. Just forward from this straight railing on a triangle shaped dais is the ship’s commanding officer chair. Forward of the Commanding Officer’s chair is the helm station. Forward of the helm station is the ship’s main view screen, to the port side of the view screen is a turbolift. Emergency access to the bridge is gained by a single Jeffries tube located centrally on the floor, in front of the helm station.

The edit is noted, and it works.

SNIP. The rest is good.

UTILITY SYSTEMS

SNIP. Okay.

CREW SUPPORT SYSTEMS

SNIP. Okay.

AUXILIARY SPACECRAFT SYSTEMS

SNIP. Okay.

TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS

SNIP. Okay.

DECK LAYOUT

SNIP. I don’t see any inconsistencies here.

SHIPS OF THE CLASS

SNIP. Barring a missing period at the end of the description sentence, everything works.

CONCLUSION

Though an older design, recent refits have brought renewed life to the aging Baker class Observers. Though few remain, they continue to serve as to their original intent to seek out new life and new scientific discoveries for the Federation and her allies.

Given that the only issues with the specification are minor, can be fixed in final markup, and do not negatively affect the overall usefulness or readability of the design, the Baker-class Heavy (Support) Observer is approved for entry into the Technical Manual. The Engineering Department will create a temporary page for a design until such time as the Library is available for updates.
