So, in an attempt to get discussion happening here, I’m going to be posing some discussion points during the term. Everyone is welcomed to join in the discussion.

The first one is around Holiday/Party Treknology.

Is there a holiday tradition that you engage in with family/friends that you’d love seen brought into the Star Trek universe?

It doesn’t need to be for Christmas/Winter holidays/Summer holidays, it could be for anything at all at any time in the year and it could be big/small. It could even be a celebration or party or remembrance. In STF in past years, Engineers have lit the decks of their ship with Christmas lights, and there have been celebrations / commemorations for different events from weddings to birthdays to date nights to events in Star Trek history to graduations and a few other things in between.

What would you like to see and how would it work/be Treknologified?
For me, my earliest memories are getting together with cousins and an aunt/uncle and me/dad and my two older male cousins having contests with Space invaders (this was early - mid 80’s). We would manually keep scores and play long into the night trying to beat the previous highest score … I would trekify this by having a holosuite/deck program in which the people taking part have a series of old school Atari 2600’s set up hooked up and running an automatic score update, in a room overlooking QLD Sunshine Coast out of Caloundra as it was in the 1980’s, so with fish and chips smells, seagull calls, and sand everywhere. The ship you’d control would still be a side mover ship, and you’d have 3 shields that get destroyed quickly and the bonus mother ships that fly over the top … it wouldn’t be fancy so as to give the whole Atari 2600 experience, just on a much bigger scale :)

Over to you!

Hey Russ, nice start for a topic this time of year for the term! So just to clarify are you inquiring about canon holidays in trek? Real holidays brought into Trek? Or made up ones for STF or something in between? My little sicky Roach brain is confused!

Robert Archer

Hi Rob, thanks for the question.
Honestly, my idea was any and all of the above … it really is just me trying to get people to think of holidays or vacations or the like they know and bringing it into the STF world. I was an active creater in Santharia for a few years. Santharian Dream was an online community that sought towork together to create a world similar to JRR Tolkien’s Middle Earth. One of the things we did was take modern things and make them into setting specific things.

As an example, there I had an idea based on tribbles and hyperlinks for an animal called hyperlynx - a creature that had an extra high motabalism that was an accident from a magician’s spell used for categorising information. They started off blue and full of energy and when they got used, they turned purple - use them too much without refreshing them and they eventually turned red and died - their actual name was uriel, from memory.

So if someone, and I’m not going to use any names here to protect the innocent, but they could be the current captain of the Atlantis, goes out to pubs with friends and spends their time riding mechanical bulls while there, they could decide to try to give it a more Trekified feel. I’m sure no one knows who I’m talking about here.

There really aren’t any hard or fast rules around this, just trying to encourage people to think of Treknology away from ‘THE BIG THINGS’ like starships/stations and their facility wide systems to ‘SMALLER THINGS’ like devices to assist in everyday life. For example, in the motel I stayed in for mum’s and dad’s 50th wedding anniversary the room’s toilet had a heated bowl and buttons to massage/clean and so forth the part of the tribble’s body that interacts with the toilet. I’d see that as a ‘SMALLER THING’.
