These questions are for each ticket.

Let’s assume that a member comes to you with the suggestion that it would be really nice if we had a full set of enlisted and non-commissioned officer ranks available on every ship, so that people can play as “Senior Chief Petty Officer [character name here]” instead of “Crewman [whoever]”.

  1. Do you agree with this suggestion? Why or why not?

In principle I do agree with the idea, afterall more options to expand role playing opportunity is always nice and generate creative posts/writing plots

Okay cool.

  1. Does this suggestion require you specifically as the President to do anything? Assuming you wanted to implement this suggestion, what exactly would be necessary from you as the President to do that? Please include a list of specific procedural steps that would be necessary (if any).

Joe

I do not believe there is anything specifically as prez I would need to do. If the suggestion was going to be implemented I would think this would fall to the CO’s on said ships to contact TECH asking for the ranks to be added, which was as it was in the previous version of the site. I so far do not think anything changed in that regards that I am aware of, feel free to correct me if I’m wrong.

Thank you for the question joe and I hope this answers things

Robert Archer

Okay, your second answer here needs a little work. You are correct that nothing has changed between the two sites, but incorrect that this was supported on the old site. The current site includes all of the ranks that the old site did and “Senior Chief Petty Officer” was not one of them. The only enlisted non-Marine rank available has been “Crewman”. The reason for this is not technical in nature. I don’t want to give the exact answer away to James, so I’m not going to say the exact reason, but he’s right that a bylaw is involved.

See this is where I got confused as on the old site the ark angel and the albert einstein in xfleet both had non-com ranks and non-com marine ranks for use which we had added I think by your help joe. This is why I answered as I did and failed to mention the by law need.

The only naval non-com was “Crewman.” There were marine non-com ranks, but they are all defined elsewhere.

In either case to add club wide the RDR found here https://www.star-fleet.com/library/bookshelf/handbook/ranks.html I believe needs to be edited and approved of changes to include non-com ranks

That’s incorrect. The player’s handbook lists ranks, but it is not the document that must be amended to allow new ones.

Let’s suppose as an extension to the scenario above that you as the President do actually tell that member that their CO needs to ask TECH to add the rank. Two weeks go by and the CO comes to you and says “Joe doesn’t want to do it because of some bylaw thing. Make him do it and make him give us character pictures too.”

Knowing what you know now (and feel free to use any resources at your disposal to know more), what would you do next?

Joe

Knowing now what I know or believe is the correct procedure I would explain to the member my mistake earlier and explain what would need to happen, whether this is reasonable to make such changes would come down to a discussion first, as for the character pictures I would explain there too that to my knowledge such is not possible right now because TECH has higher priorities to get done for the site. And also that TECH doesn’t take orders from the prez being a separate entity in managing the club’s site as TECH was originally setup so that the prez doesn’t interfere or bring useless ideas that slow down site maintenance.

Hope that helps joe?

Robert Archer

I appreciate the answer about character pictures, but I would like more detail to demonstrate that you understand what is necessary to make the change to ranks. Just to reiterate, it’s not editing the player handbook.

You mention that a discussion would be necessary; that is a good first step and part of the process that I am thinking of. What official process is necessary to make this change? Please explicitly list every single step, so we can tell of you understand and possess this minimally required knowledge to be an effective President, or can ask for it from someone else who has it.

Joe
