These questions are for each ticket.

Let’s assume that a member comes to you with the suggestion that it would be really nice if we had a full set of enlisted and non-commissioned officer ranks available on every ship, so that people can play as “Senior Chief Petty Officer [character name here]” instead of “Crewman [whoever]”.

  1. Do you agree with this suggestion? Why or why not?

  2. Does this suggestion require you specifically as the President to do anything? Assuming you wanted to implement this suggestion, what exactly would be necessary from you as the President to do that? Please include a list of specific procedural steps that would be necessary (if any).

Joe

Hi Joe, thanks for the question.

  1. I’d agree that it would indeed be really nice for the most part and I wouldn’t be against the conversation. Options are great although personally I don’t think so many ranks are actually needed and potentially, with so many ranks in play that people without much of a military mindset could get easily confused. For example a writer on my own ship played a Master Chief, and as a non-military person in another country I spent time looking up ‘correct’ ways to address the character and what they would reasonably be expected to do, be treated and how other characters of ‘superior’ rank would interact with them. It took time away from the RP although I learned a bit, especially in the discussions around how O’Brien acted and was treated vs a current day SCPO.

We got around not actually having a Master Chief rank by simply choosing the Crewman rank on the MOTD, then placing MCPO in the position box next to the characters role of Security. Effectively making the Character a Security Master Chief Petty Officer, the writer then signed off on posts as MCPO and we were good. It can be done with what we have now if people really want it.

Ok, cool.

  1. The suggestion does not require anybody specifically as the President to do anything, it is simply a suggestion.

This is not the answer I was looking for, but it is an exceptionally correct answer and I am therefore even more impressed.

If we assume that I wanted to implement this (or even just get feedback from the Club) the first step is to hold a discussion in Command using the Proposal Format displayed on the MOTD page. If that discussion led to a list of ranks people agreed that we should add, the next step under the Bills and Bylaws Edict (BABE) is to present a proposed Bill to the membership in Command so that it can be reviewed and discussed, stating the changes to the Member Order and Organization Bylaw based on the Edict Robinson #81 (Revision 4) that forms the basis of MOO that deals with ranks.

Once ready to be issued, the Bill would then be posted under ‘Office of the President’ with the additions that BABE requires. Namely the Bill number, Presidents name and their capacity as President or Acting President, and the date it is being issued.

Thanks
Dave

Thanks Dave, this answer is pretty much perfect.

Joe

Thank you for allowing me to answer, Joe.

Cheers
Dave
