This question is pretty straight forward, but for the events of picard in the 2380s what are your thoughts in the coming term to discuss integrating them into the club properly?

Robert Archer

Daniel and I have not discussed this, but I can tell you what my position would be in the discussion. I think he’d agree, but a little disagreement is probably good in a ticket anyway :).

STF started when TNG was the only Trek on the air. It has existed through DS9, VOY, ENT, movies, and has adopted all of them as canon (I’m not going to try to find it, but I believe there was a declaration at some point that all new episodes become STF canon two weeks after airing, merely to prevent spoiling for people where it might air on a different date; this obviously may have changed in the intervening years and I’m unaware). There is no precedent for not accepting the events of a live-action series as canon, and doing so now sets a poor precedent, in my opinion.

If someone wants to continue playing in a world where the events of Picard haven’t happened, then perhaps they should propose a new Alt-RPG in the TNG-era 2360s-2370s, or a ship in X-Fleet.

I think a better discussion is whether to consider Lower Decks as canon. Thus far, they haven’t strayed too far from what we think of as canon already; but the potential there is huge.

Nathan

Nathan is right that we hadn’t turned our minds to this.

The issue with implanting Picard was four-fold:

1) The impact on canon was massive. (Role of artificial life forms, Romulans on Earth (and elsewhere), the destruction of the evacuation fleet, and Mars(!!)).

2) The timing meant those events had already happened by the club’s current game year, which means significant changes to some characters currently in use. Does it now make sense for a ship to have had an AI for the last five years or more? (No, and some characters should be having major issues). The ships and fleets would most likely be heavily affected by the loss of the evacuation fleet. And let’s not get started on the impact of the related events on Mars.

3) We wanted to delay any discussions until season one was over so we knew what the actual impact was.

4) A few people were concerned about spoilers (I was not one in agreement with that.)

At this point I do think it’s time to address those canon impacts. I don’t think it just come as a directive in Command. Instead I would probably ask the GM Dept to take lead, review the impact of the canon changes, and give a guide for players, COs and GMs about the changes in canon being introduced in the club.

As Nathan said, it’s no different then canon changing from other shows and movies (we addressed the destruction of Romulus earlier) - it’s just the impact. Anyone could create an x-fleet ship if they wanted to RP where none of those embankment events happened. But all players and GMs in the club need to be on the same page of what is it isn’t RP canon
