Sarah,

The way I read the bylaw and the way I am recalling the bylaw was interpreted in a somewhat recent election is that if a Presidential Candidate drops out then the ticket has to be disqualified. There are only provisions for the ticket to continue if the Vice Presidential Candidate drops out before the voting stage.

Do you read the bylaw differently? I was surprised by your response to Brian’s post.

Adam W.

Hi Adam,

Yes, I recall that discussion and you’re correct that the bylaw is worded that way. There is flexibility allowed via the irregularity process, however, and that was enough for me to check in with Brian to see what he wanted to do.

I’m not sure anyone has participated in more elections than me as a candidate at this point (6? I think?) and so I’m uniquely aware of the time and the energy that can go into a platform. I wanted to extend a moment of humanity to Brian in recognition of how difficult it might be for him to not only find out that his good friend is struggling with her health, but now this thing they’ve planned on for months and spend time and energy on could be all for naught, not long after the end of the nomination period. The other candidates in the election were all aware of what was going on and, if Brian had wanted to continue with someone else, we all would have discussed the best way to move forward, whether that was re-opening nominations or finding another way for him to be involved or one of the many other things that I’m sure would come up when smart people put their heads together to solve a problem.

As to why I posted the note about it, I’ve found that, in STF, documenting everything is best and now there is a record that Brian was offered a chance to figure something out and politely declined it. I have no idea if this might come up in a future election in which he might run, but I’m surprised rather frequently at the new and exciting ways people try to spin history.

I know this isn’t my question nor I have a right but I am a little exasperated by its existence, shocked to be more precise.

The recession was due to a very credible health concern, the ticket has been unvalidated and I feel this question is insensitive and the matter should be dropped, moved on to private if necessarily pressing.

I applaud the election co-ordinators response in showing her compassion and understanding towards the members involved, and I am frustrated that someone may be more concerned about the wording and/or decisions made than someone’s health.

Hi Jake,

Thank you for stepping in to take this one, but I’ve got it. :) I don’t want a debate on my decisions to detract time and attention from the candidates.
