This is a question for all candidates.

As the current Supervisor of Experiments, I’ve been disappointed to serve the majority of my time in the role with an empty X-Fleet. There have been several great concepts floated to me but, so far, none of them have managed to gather the requisite five players for an official application. This has surprised me for a couple of reasons:
1. 2020 was a landmark year for X-Fleet with our first ever transitioning of an X-Ship into the main fleets. So I’d been hoping that might encourage more players to get involved with this side of the club and try out their own ship.
2. Daniel had an excellent suggestion for an ‘X-Fleet Classifieds’ section to assist in finding players for concepts (and concepts for players) and I was happy to implement that some months ago now. But it is yet to pull in the attention that I was hoping it might.

So my questions for the candidates are:

  1. How do you personally see X-Fleet fitting in with the rest of the club going forwards?
  2. Do you have any plans or ideas as part of your campaign to generate more interest in X-Fleet from the membership at large?

Thank you all in advance for your time. As always, depending on your responses, I may have follow-up questions.

  • Sharon

I’m going to Hijack and add another question here, “Do you think X-Fleet could and should be used to train future GMs in an environment that will allow them to more willingly explore and train?”

  • Jake

So I’m going try and answer both questioner’s question but Jake’s specifically has been something I’ve been thinking about for quite awhile.

So first off Sharon’s questions. I feel like the X-Fleet is underutilized as it currently is. The Leviathan was obviously a success story on how a ship was created in X-Fleet, proved its mettle and popularity, went through a few charter revisions, then jumped to the main fleet. It was my understanding that the X-Fleet was never intended to be a sort of testing grounds for ships to move to the main fleet however and that aspect I think is necessary to first have a much needed discussion before coming to some sort of plan. I would like to support any group that wants to spin up a quirky ship idea and put it through its paces. I think it would be cool to pack X-Fleet with as many ships as people have ideas for. A return question for you: With the Leviathan’s success, is doing a trial process in X-Fleet before considering the move to the main fleet something you want to see? Both in your role as a member and as the Supervisor of Experiments.

Now to Jake’s question. I had mentioned to Geoff in his question, but have no problem restating it, that I had been thinking on whether or not creating a ship for the sole purpose of training GMs would be feasible. It would run like a standard ship with the exception that the CO or XO would be GM Mentor qualified and willing to have GMTs rotate through the ship. I was thinking that having multiple GMTs training concurrently would be an issue with only having one ship specifically purposed for that, but your idea of having the ship or ships in the X-Fleet could solve that issue. It’s definitely on my mind and I’m certainly hoping to get some feedback from people on these ideas.

Matt

Thank you for your response, Matt.

To answer your return question, when I created the Levi in X-Fleet, it was never with the intention of moving into the main fleets. But of course I am completely delighted that we have and would not be against other X-Ships following the same path. However, I don’t believe an X-Ship should be created with this specific goal in mind and what I would actually prefer to see would be for X-Ships to be taken more seriously by the club at large (I think there’s a tendency for them to be somewhat ‘looked down upon’ compared to main fleet ships). But that is a conversation I would love to have in the future with whoever wins the election and if I serve another term as SoX.

While I can’t make any guarantees regarding who will win or who will be retained in various positions, either way I’m in support of having this discussion. I wasn’t around during the inception of the X-Fleet and so my feelings for it upon my return were fairly lukewarm. I guess I saw it as more of a novelty without really thinking about the potential that it held. Now though Dave and I have been tossing around ideas on how to showcase or spotlight the X-Fleet better and in a way that may be an essential lure for new members.
