Interview with AdamW.

Posted Nov. 8, 2019, 5:50 p.m. by Kate O'Neill

An optimist is a person who starts a new diet on Thanksgiving Day. A brave person sits down at the table and has a cup of coffee with Kate O'Neill. Luckily our interviewee is both. Hello STF'ers! I am so happy to present to you this month's interview with Adam W. Adam is a five-year veteran who joined the club on May 31, 2014. Since then he has gone from a wet behind the ears Cadet to President of the club. What other positions did this Fabulous Fleet Captian hold that skyrocketed this Wisconsin native to the highest positions in the club? Let's see.

Positions Adam has held in the Club:

EGO

Assistant personnel director

Academy Fleet Liaison Officer

Vice Commandant

Fleet Commander of Pioneer Fleet

Vice President

President

While Adam may not have bound tomes of characters he has created or RP'ed in the club, he has honed the ones he does play into dynamic and engaging characters. Below is a list of what he has entertained and hooked us on reading.

Characters He has role-played:

Captain Mathias McGarrett Outpost 42

Mathias is strong determined and has his sights set on being the best Captain Starfleet has to offer. He is proud and honest holding the ideals of Starfleet as the rule his crew need to exemplify. Mathias is dedicated to his crew. He is quick to laugh but also has a serious side when needed.

Lieutenant Wally Jeznick, Counselor on the USS Constellation

Wally is one of those people that try to do the least amount of work possible to get by mainly because he is all about making people smile. Wally was the comic sidekick in every situation offering a laugh or facepalm when you read his storyline. Wally may never get to be a Department head but he definitely won our hearts.

Adam W. of the USS Dauntless

Adam played himself, which everyone did on the Dauntless, before he left the ship and it went a different direction. The RP idea was that all involved played themselves somehow getting transported to the future, which was great fun.

Now without further ado go fill up your Thanksgiving plate, settle back, and enjoy the interview.

20 QUESTIONS WITH KATE O'NEILL

1. Are you a turkey or ham kinda guy for the holidays?
Ham. Turkey can be wonderful when it’s prepared in a non-traditional way and you make it spicy. When it’s a dry and bland version of chicken I’d much rather have ham.

2. On a scale of 1 to 10 with 10 being the greatest thing that has ever happened to you in your STF life, how excited were you when Kate O'Neill said yes to being your XO?
At least an 8. It’s so critical when you’re an XO or a CO to team up with someone you work well with. The other person will cause you headaches if you’re not a good fit with them. I really recommend that an up and coming member not take whatever open XO spot there is without knowing anything about the CO. And as a CO I wouldn’t suggest opening up for XO applications and only picking from those who apply. I think a better approach is to figure out who the person is you’d want to do it most who is eligible and ask them, then moving on to the next person if they say no.

3. If you were a Thanksgiving side dish what would you be?
Green bean casserole. I really love mushrooms.

4. If you were on a deserted island what board game would you pick? Monopoly, Clue, Life, Candyland, or Scrabble
I think I’d go with Clue as I think it is the best game of those. Monopoly is tempting and I enjoy the strategy in it, but it can make people upset and it’s weird that the winning approach ends up being to spend as much time in jail as possible.

5. What is harder to manage: Being Captain of the Outpost or co-leader of a youth group?
The youth group, but it’s a lot of fun and very rewarding. Outpost 42, for the most part, hasn’t been too difficult to manage. We’ve always had fantastic writers and there’s a really great group of players on the Outpost right now.

6. If you could write a theme song for one of your characters what would it be and who would it be for?
While roleplaying with my counselor Wally, Anna L. and I wrote a song together in a thread on the Connie because I thought it was a fitting moment for them to break out into a musical. Both characters were convinced that the door that was in between them was talking, but they were actually each hearing the voice of the other. The song was an ode to doors and a call to stand up for doors since they had been discovered to be intelligent and had been mistreated and used. So that song was kind of a theme song for Wally and his uniqueness.

7. Of the many hats you have worn what hat would you want to burn and scatter the ashes? What hat would you put on again?
I assume people would expect I’d say the last thing I’d want would be to be President again...but actually I’d most want to avoid the Assistant Personnel Director role. I found that experience more stressful. As for one I’d want to do again I’d probably say Fleet Commander. I like seeing that people are treated fairly and also it’s neat being involved in selecting a CO. I may continue to meddle in mostly unofficial capacities for a while as I feel others have more energy for significant roles than I do right now.

8. So rumor has it that when Dance Dance Revolution starts up in Ten Forward you are a dancing machine. True or false.... have you now or ever been declared Mr. Dance Marathon.
True! I was declared Mr. Dance Marathon for an 18-hour dance marathon when I was in college for being the most enthusiastic male participant. Twice actually. I only really have one dance move I think, but I can do it fast. People who know me are usually surprised.

9. Taking out the Borg as an option, because everyone chooses them, what Star Trek enemy would be the hardest to defeat?
I’ll go with Species 8472 as they’re too much for the Borg to handle. Although I’m kind of tempted to say two-dimensional beings. Good luck figuring out how to deal with them.

10. Since November is the month for being Thankful, what thing are you most thankful for over the past year?
The men and women in my community who are emergency responders and the lives they saved here. I’ve had a unique opportunity to gain an appreciation of law enforcement, firefighters, and emergency medical responders here in my county during the last year. I’m extremely grateful for the chances I’ve had to thank many of them with gifts I made through my workplace and the opportunities I’ve had to get to know a lot of them.

11. Which is a harder race to role play: Vulcan, Klingon, Ferengi?
Vulcan, which is actually the only one of those I have tried. I started here playing a Vulcan and I found it surprisingly challenging as I kept wanting to write about how my character felt about what was happening. I can’t tell you how many times I wrote the word “felt” and then had to delete it.

12. Which is better? pumpkin pie or apple pie
Apple pie by a longshot. I love apple pie. I don’t mind pumpkin flavor in things, but I just don’t understand the appeal of pumpkin pie. Does anyone like that texture? At some people’s houses, they just have pumpkin pie or pecan pie. Come on people, you can do better than that.

13. So your character Mathais McGarrett is lucky enough to have his mom on the outpost. If you run into one of those unexpected ion storms that conveniently let up RP something out, what personality trait would Mathias want to mind wipe from Evie McGarrett?
Her desire to help him get romantically involved with someone. That’s led to some funny roleplaying moments. But there’s no more annoying quality that a mother can have.

14. When flipping through the channels on the TV what are you more likely going to watch: Sitcom, drama, game show, or reality show?
Of those, I’d pick the game show. I’ve always enjoyed them. I actually spend very little time watching TV aside from sporting events. If I could never watch anything but Star Trek: The Next Generation and sports, I’d be good.

15. If you could create your own board game what would it be?
Actually I’ve done this twice. Both times I saw something in real life that had a lot of strategy to it and thought it would be fitting to turn it into a board game. The first I called the Election Game, which was based on the US presidential election. It was two-player and the players had to choose which states to do their campaign stops in and which to buy ads in, which affected how they would do in those states. The second time, which was very recent, I created a game with the four theme parks of Walt Disney World. Players have to strategize about what ride to go to when and complete the objectives they have chosen. Without testing it at all I jumped straight into playing a five-player game of it. I’d call both games a success, particularly the second one.

16. Its decision time. The Borg are coming and they are wiping out a national park. You have a choice to protect one and sacrifice the other. What goes: Yosemite or Yellowstone?
Well, if I have to, I’ll pick Yosemite. Honestly, I was ready to answer Yellowstone as I haven’t visited it as often. But then the coaster on my end table that I got from Yellowstone with a picture of a bison next to a geyser was staring at me. The American bison was nearly wiped out by humanity. They shouldn’t go through the same with the Borg. Seriously though these are both places of impressive beauty that everyone should see.

17. Testing your Captain skills Kobayashi maru Border Collie version. You are all alone on your ship because XO approved your entire crew for shore leave at the same time. Sipping a nice cup tea of you suddenly find your warp core is about to explode, you have a tribble infestation, and some Klingons are asking to come aboard to welcome you to the neighboorhood...what one Star Trek person would you call to your aid?
If I’m on my ship alone I assume this means I’m actually trapped inside a static warp bubble, so I’d certainly be asking Wesley Crusher to help me escape it.

18. What is your favorite character to play and why?
My counselor Wally. He’s a purely silly character and I always have a blast roleplaying the great effort he puts into being lazy. I came up with the idea for the character because I really didn’t want to join the Thalassa, but I thought it would be okay if I put in as little effort as possible.

19. If you could go for a hike one place where would you go?
In the last twelve years, I’ve made many trips to various US National Parks and I’ve gotten to hike many beautiful places. The one hike I love the most is hiking to Chesler Park in Canyonlands National Park. There are these huge and crazy-looking partially red and partially white huge mushroom-shaped rock formations. It’s one of the places in southern Utah that seems like it could pass for being another planet.

20. What are your favorite aspects of STF?
The community here is great. It’s really neat getting to know such a diverse group of people from all sorts of different places. Also, I love the chances I’ve had to help people out who needed it. I’ve never thought of myself as much of a writer, but I really enjoy the creative fun that can come out of roleplaying.

Thank you so much Adam for sitting down with me and letting the club get to know you better.

~ Kate
