Community & Events Projects- Volunteers

Posted Feb. 10, 2021, 11:28 a.m. by Linds Bayes (Community & Marketing Manager) (Lindsay B)

In the early autumn I sent out a survey trying to gauge the interest in various projects. I spoke about the results here: https://www.star-fleet.com/core/command/command/posts/108062/

Based on that we have begun to set plans in motion to tackle the different projects. If you responded to the survey and indicated you wanted to help organize any of the projects, I’ve recently contacted you to confirm your interest. If you did not receive the email, please check your spam and/or let me know you didn’t get the email.

For everyone else, you are still welcome to volunteer. Keep in mind that we may allocate volunteers to different projects based on highest need (ie. if a project has tons of volunteers and a different one doesn’t have enough, we may ask people who said yes to both to join the smaller team).

To volunteer, please email me (Linds) at cmm@star-fleet.com. I don’t mind DMs in Discord usually, but it’s easier for me to track and file emails than it is chat messages, so keep it to email for this.

PROJECTS

Workshop

The RP and Writing Workshop will be a weeklong event. There will be “masterclasses” on the Ten Forward Board all week, and Discussion Panels and Workshops in Discord over the weekend. Date to be determined.

What we need:
-people interested in running a ‘masterclass’ in a particular area of writing or RP
-people interested in running a live workshop and/or being on a panel

From the people interested in running these things, we will form a team who will work out the details of the event (Dates, assigned tasks, liaising with others etc)

Bookclub

We had quite a bit of interest in trying to re-start the bookclub, and having people interested in running it monthly is key. Based on feedback, it looks like there will be discussions etc in Ten Forward, as well as possibly an area on Discord for this as well.

What we need:
-people interested in coordinating the monthly(?) book selection and discussion, probably on a rotating basis.

A bookclub team will be formed and they will be responsible for title selections, coordinating with the readers, running discussions and tweaking the bookclub to make it as fun and accessible as possible.

Audio Dramas

The audio dramas (recorded readings of STF threads/stories) proved to have a lot of interest and we seem to have a strong group of people who could possible organize, read parts and run the technical side.

What we need:
-people interested in reading a part (which will require recording it with the guidance and support of the technical team)
-people with the ability to lend technical support

While there are two parts to this, it will be one team that works together to discuss and evaluate best options, gather resources (including liaising with other club members/teams as needed), schedule, edit and distribute recordings.

My Role

As CMM (Community & Marketing Manager), my role is to coordinate these projects and make sure things happen. Though I know for sure I will be a member of one of these work teams, in all other cases I see myself as keeping tabs of the conversation, helping set and enforce deadlines where needed and in general lending support to the teams. I can liaise with other departments and the Exec as needed. My goal here is to help the club get used to how this whole process is supposed to work. It’s collaborative and cannot rely on any one person otherwise we end up with burnout.

As a side note to that, I do ask each volunteer to be sure they have the time and energy to follow through on their offer. Yes, of course things happens and these teams will undoubtedly shift and change over time, but it’s important that if you are volunteering you are prepared to do the work involved.

I’m excited to see these things take shape and come to fruition. My deepest and sincerest thanks to everyone who volunteers. Without you, none of this will happen!

~Linds, CMM
