Hello everyone,

I just started reading the prequel novel “The Last Best Hope” to Star Trek Picard and thought that I’m probably not the only one reading it nor the only one who would like to talk about it.

What are your thoughts, questions, etc?

So far I only read the first two chapters, but I’m hooked. Not to mention that a couple of questions popped up in my mind. Like: What happened to Geordi during the attack on Mars? Did he die? Or is he alive? He was mentioned by Zhaban in second episode, so my guess is the latter. Or?
Also, will we learn more about Raffi and her family? I’m not sure why, but I was surprised when I read that she was married and had an 11-year-old son.

Anyway, I’m curious to hear from the rest of you :)

You’re probably surprised because what little we’ve seen of her doesn’t suggest a life trajectory that would or did result in marriage and children. Consider how few of the principal cast of any of the shows is depicted as married (the exceptions being on DS9, where characters were allowed to develop in those directions instead of being kept single for episodic stories), and those are people whose Starfleet careers are generally working out for them. Raffi is a mess in 2399 (though she has unusually good real estate, if she actually is allowed to be camped out at Vasquez Rocks) and it is implied heavily that her career tanked because she was riding Picard’s coat tails.

nods You have a point. I guess I’m mostly confused/irritated by myself. I consider myself a very open-minded person and thus I don’t like it that it surprised me that a woman on TV, who isn’t depicted as a traditional motherly type, is a mother and wife.

When is her son 11 years old? If it’s the same time as the attack, he might be in his early twenties by now (e.g. old enough to encounter as a functioning adult in space at an appropriately dramatic moment).

Joe

The book starts in 2381. So 18 years before the series. Which would mean that her son is 29 now (15 when the attack on Mars happened in 2385). So yeah, if we meet him (outside a flashback) it will be as an adult.
