Cochrane tried to catch up to the CSO as she moved down the passageway from the Lounge. “Lieutenant Sadie, a moment please.” His speech was informal, but it still carried the underlying tone that it was not a suggestion.

Cochrane, XO

Sadie slowed to a stop, but didn’t look at the XO. She retreated into herself further, hanging her head and glancing back at him with a deer-in-the-headlights expression on her face. “I’d rather not have this conversation,” she muttered softly, feeling as though she knew exactly where this was going.

Sadie

Cochrane moved to her side and said “Me, either. But it seems like we are going to. Let’s go to my office, Lieutenant.” and he led the way to the door. He didn’t want to discuss sensitive matters in front of the crew, so he opted for the closest private space. Entering the room, he said “Take a seat, Lieutenant.” His tone was conversational, as if nothing in the past three minutes had occurred, but then he sat down behind his desk and said “Ok. Mind telling me what in all the layers of the Abyss that was all about?” and he looked at the obviously distressed CSO with a look of confusion and concern.

Cochrane, XO

“I… don’t like him, Cochrane. I can’t stand my own Junior Officer. He bothers me in all the wrong ways and… I don’t know what to do about it!” the Science DH stammered. “I feel like a horrible person, shouldn’t I like everyone? Shouldn’t I be able to work with whoever they place under me in the workplace…?” She closed her eyes, not sure what else could be said. It didn’t help that the discomfort she felt around him caused her already troublesome anxiety to go into overdrive.

IC: Cochrane looked at her and said “Well… first of all no one can be expected to like everyone all the time. That’s just impossible, not to mention I for one don’t even like my friends all the time.” and he gave her a sympathetic smile. “As far as working with him… well… let’s see what we can work out. So first step is to answer an all important question, Lieutenant.” and he rose and walked to the replicator.

“Tea or coffee?”

Cochrane, XO

Sadie closed her eyes and waited for the important question, then flinched slightly when it turned out to be such a simple question. “Ah, just tea please…” she said softly. “And… make sure it’s decaffeinated. Smaller body, less caffeine tolerance,” she added with a nervous smile.

Sadie

Cochrane smiled and nodded. He turned to the replicator and said “Grandmother’s tea, decaf.” and retrieved the cup and saucer from the machine and turned and set it on the desk in front of the CSO. “Take a moment. Take a breath. When you are ready, we will talk. Until then, enjoy the tea. It’s my grandmother’s favorite.” he said with a slight smile. He picked up his own mug and took a drink, swiveling in the chair and looking out the window to give Sadie time to compose herself.

Cochrane, XO

Sadie took a long sip, closing her eyes. She was still shaking a little, and the warm liquid helped her calm down a little. Honestly, she would prefer a little Janape, but doubted the XO had a stash of beans on hand. She took in a deep breath, then let it out, then continued to drink her tea until it was about half-way done. She placed the drink on the nearby table. She took a deep breath. “Ok…”

Sadie

Cochrane paused before turning to look at her, making sure she was ready to speak. When he did, he looked directly at her and said “Ok…” and he took a deep breath. “Now. Let’s start from the beginning. Ensign Myrok. What seems to be the issue there? And how do you wish to handle it?”

Cochrane, XO

Sadie took a deep breath. “I feel uncomfortable around the Ensign. I’m not sure what causes said discomfort. But I find it very difficult to work with him,” Sadie said, speaking slowly and deliberately. “Or even be near him, if I am to be honest… I don’t have a clue what to do about it.”
