“I came to get my psychological exam. Will I have to wait for the next counsellor before I am able to get it, or is there someone with the relevant training already aboard that could get me ready for duty?” Starr asked, not impatiently but in an effort to try and be cleared so that he didn’t have to wait around twiddling his thumbs until someone cleared him for duty.

“Hmm..” Jasmijn considered his dilemma. Psychological evaluations were pertinent to the boarding process, but without a counselor it could not be done. Suddenly, an idea popped into her head. “Come with me, Ensign. I do believe there is a way to get around your little obstacle.” A toothy grin dashed across scarred lips. With a wide gesture, DeVries set off down the corridor.

“Lead the way, ma’am” Simon responded to the XO, following her down the corridor to where she was leading. He wondered what she had planned for his current situation.

DeVries led him to the turbolift, gesturing him inside. A short trip later, they were departing onto another deck. Taking the lead, she made her way down the corridor, turning into an office which presented her name in bold letters beside the door. “After you,” She motioned.

Starr entered the Lt. Cmdr.’s office and as he did so he asked: “Sorry to speak out of place, ma’am, but were you a counsellor before taking your current position?” Seeing the nameplate and position of the officer on the door. He wanted to make sure that he would be talking to someone with the professional capacity and get it over with. It wasn’t his favourite part of the academy, and he doubted it would be his favourite part of any assignment he has, but he knew it was important so knew only to get it done so he didn’t have to worry about it any more. A lesson he learned in the first year of his Academy training, the more he put it off, the more he worried about it so the more he put it off. A never-ending cycle of worry.

“Do I look like the kind of woman to sit around listening to poeple’s problems?” DeVries asked, raising an eyebrow at the young Ensign. “There isn’t a lick of psychological training in my background– I worked for the Marine Corp up until a few years back.” She gestured to the memorabilia decorated the walls of her small office. Among them was a Klingon bat’leth, hanging as a centrepiece above a sash and a collection of Marine pieces. “Lucky for you,” DeVries rounded her desk, taking a seat. “I know someone who is a counselor. She owes me a few favours, so this’ll solve your little problem.. she’s Starfleet, don’t worry.”

In his second year, he tried to get it done as quickly as possible, knowing that even though it wasn’t the most comfortable experience, he knew what to expect, so it didn’t worry him as much. He also found that once it was out of the way, there was nothing to worry about anymore, and he has taken that attitude to these evaluations ever since, but also found they could be helpful, and it made him a better cadet, and he now knew it would make him a better officer.

OOC: This is going to be a bit different than normal psych eval sims. Hopefully it works out well and can be fun in the process!

Situated behind her desk, DeVries worked to pull up a transmission between her and the mysterious counselor. Several seconds passed and nothing came from the young officer, until a wild, almost animalistic smirk spread across her dark face. “Ah! Beveres. Long time, no see.”

“DeVries, it is always a pleasure to see your face.” There was a hint of sarcasm behind the politeness of her distinctive accent, which presented itself in the drawl of the Kenyan tongue. “What can I do for you, Commander?”

“The Ark Angel is short a counselor, and I have an onboarding Ensign who requires an evaluation before he can be signed off for duty.” DeVries’ tone went from frivolity to formality in less than a second, “I understand the Viking is between missions, based on our recent communiques. So, do you have a few moments to spare?”

“I have a meeting in one hour, but until then, let me see how I can help.” Tal returned, the sound of clicking crossing through the static. “Have him come around the corner, and get comfortable.” A pause, “You better not be in the room, Jasmijn. This is a confidential procedure and does not require the snooping of other officers.”

“The Viking really has changed you, Counselor.” Sarcasm pinched her tone as she rose to her feet. “Ensign, Lieutenant Ta’lahali Beveres, the Counselor of the USS Viking will conduct your boarding evaluation. Make yourself comfortable and comm me when you are finished. Take your time and feel free to snag my chair,” She moved past him, heading for the door. “Beveres– he’s not a Viking, so go easy on him.”

“I’ll do my best.” Her voice emanated from around the corner. Once Jasmijn had disappeared, it returned. “Ensign? Do you mind coming around the corner? Sadly, I cannot turn around this monitor.” Her voice softened. “Also, what’s your name?”

Lt. Beveres, CNS (USS Viking)

Starr did as requested and headed around “Ensign Simon Starr, sir” he said, again not assuming gender straight away. “Good to meet you, kind of,” he said, almost as if adding the last part on like a question. He had to admit, he’d never had a remote psych evaluation during the academy and this was a new experience. He took the XO’s advice and sat down gently, “So, as the commander said, I’m in need of a psych evaluation before I begin my duties aboard the Ark Angel,” he said, a little nervously, which he was unsuccessfully trying to cover up.

Ensign Simon Starr, Security

“Please, call me Counselor or Beveres–none of that ‘sir’ crap, it makes me feel old.” She grinned, shaking her head in mild amusement. “I see. Let’s make this quick and painless, all right?” She spoke softly. “Are you new to Starfleet, Mister Starr? Or is the Ark Angel among your many assignments to fleet ships?” She asked, typing in his name to pull up his file. It took a few moments longer, the transfer of information over a greater distance inhibiting her speed. After all, the Ark Angel and the Viking were nowhere near each other.

Lt. Beveres
CNS (USS Viking)

“Oh, yes counsellor” Starr replied. Pulling up the file, it would show that he was fresh out of the academy and this was his first posting. “This is my first official assignment as an officer,” he said answering the question. There was also a note regarding the fact that Starr had opened up a little about his brother, Tom, during his sessions at the academy. His brother was flagged as missing when the academy performed standard background checks on his family. He majored in Federation Law and in his third year also picked up Starship Tactics as part of his studies. He spent his final year on the cadet cruise aboard the USS Challenger, in the Security division.

“I see you come from the Challenger–a fine ship, don’t you think?” She smiled at the digital image of her patient. She did not focus on his file, figuring it had little to do with who Simon was as a person. Clasping her hands together, a mug of what appeared to be coffee beside them, she focussed on Starr. “How have you been settling in so far?” She asked. His cadet cruise would have given him the expectations for his first assignment, but that did not eradicate the anxieties of one’s initial officer position.
