Scans of the drill showed several old power relays had shorted out likely from age and use or dirt getting into the works. Several components were also seen as being placed partly incorrectly likely by Shanok not being fully versed in engineering matters she could figure. But the stand out on the scan was a low band fading energy pattern on the lower left side of the drill. Where once she would get her eyes on it might remind her of a burn scar from a weapon or explosive. Scans confirmed it was only a week or two old to boot!

Ranlei focused her scan on the the low frequency energy signature , “lieutenant are you sure Shanok is alone on this planet?”, she asked as having failed to find any wildlife she started disassembling the drill. She put in requests for fabrication to the ship for each worn part as she removed them. When she dug into the innards of the drill enough to get to the burned area her suspicion solidified. “I will not recommend Shanok for any certificates of merit for his ability to repair his equipment. At first I thought his own sloppiness was why it was broken. But this drill seems likely to have been sabotaged.”, she called to the security men. She scanned to see what type of weapon had left the burn with a particular bias towards plasma as the likely culprit.

Ensign Ranlei Greene. Engineer.

Simon’s neutral expression changed to one of concern at the mention of sabotage. He quickly headed over to the drill and told Chavez to keep an eye out. “We only found a single life-sign when the ark angel scanned the planet, but that doesn’t mean nobody else is here. There are certain groups of people who have found a way to mask themselves from such scans. Some of your kind are capable of it,” he said as he pulled out his own tricorder and also scanned to see if he could identify the signature of the weapon.

Ranlei humphed at Simon when he brought up some of her people, but she smiled and nodded, ‘Well if you look at the carbon scoring it looks like a low energy blast was applied Sir. Could of been a phaser on stun, or a Disruptor set to low yield. My bet would be either a plasma weapon or torch at low power based on the fact that we are perched on the edge of the Romulan neutral zone and our run in with the Guridians who were a Romulan client state till recently. That and they seem rather focused on stopping the dissidents we rescued. But can’t rule out Ferrengi or Orions since either faction would happily hire out services to anyone who will pay.” , and she turned her attention back to scanning. “By the way sir if we do have a saboteur on planet there’s always the possibility this is a distraction to keep you busy while they nab the doctor.”, she said remembering the recent spy device they had disassembled.

Ensign Ranlei Greene. Engineering.

The closest match to the energy blast was likely some kind of plasma based drill or tool. Scans seemed to match those in use by the Vulcan science directorate on record from the early-mid 23rd century. Life sign scans also came in showing dna prints which matched a Vulcan probably Shanok as well as others much much older likely the last users of the drill before Shanok got assigned to it. The only other oddity was a dna signature which did not match known species near the burn mark indicating a possible blood splatter.

Ranlei showed the results to Lt. Starr, “Ok seems to be a plasma torch or simular. I would tend to think Shannok accidentally did this himself except we have some dna from a unknown species. Could be one of the local animals. But I am just a bit to paranoid to believe that until it’s proven conclusively. We can use a doctor to run the dna samples I guess sir.”, Ranlei started repairing the repairable parts but avoided the burn site for now so as not to contaminate it.

Ensign Ranlei Greene. Engineer.

“Agreed, we should definitely take a sample for the doctors and scientists to look at, they might be able to narrow down whether it is a creature or something more intelligent, hopefully. I’ll let them know we found something.

=/\=Lieutenant Starr to Lieutenant Trax, we found some unidentified blood samples at the drill site, we’re taking a sample for you, but there’s a possibility that Shanok may not be the only one down here, depending on this blood sample.=/\=

Simon turned to Ranlei and said “take a sample of the blood for science, I’ll take it to them, Chavez stay here with Ensign Ranlei and make sure she can get the repairs done as requested,” he told his officer as he waited for Ranlei to take the sample.

Lieutenant (J.G) Simon Starr, CoS

Ranlei took that as a order and did as told. It was only a trace but she isolated it and passed on the petri dish to Lt. Starr. “It’s only a trace sample sir. Sciences and Medical will need to share.”, she said. She had used the generator and the mobile replicator she had brought to create the petri dish. It could only create small pa2rts of course but I t was better than pestering the ship every few minutes to get parts you couldn’t plan for.

Finishing fixing up the sonic drill didn’t take Ranlei too much longer only about 15 more minutes. Once she was done test diagnostics showed the drill was ready for start up and use.

OOC: Going to assume she fires it up otherwise I think in hindsight we’d never find this clue from my sim plan :P

Firing it up the sonic drill hummed smoothly to life but stopped suddenly a few seconds later with warning beeps that something was beneath it that matched its preprogrammed sensing parameters. Checking the logs she would find a something chilling sight. Beneath the drill dig are by about a foot was a mass of ancient mummified bodies in rusty ancient iron boxes. It seems Ranlei had dug up a mass grave yard! Interesting more so was that the whole site was encompassed by some sort of gelatinous like substance that seemed almost displeased to her senses to be exposed to the open air as it wiggled back and forth over the mass grave yard.

GM CockRoach

As Ranlei saw the drill hum to life she almost relaxed, she was a rather metiulous and fussy engineer and things she fixed tended to stay fixed. So the sudden stoppage elcited some rather colorful phraises on the subject of Vulcan’s and their attachments to things that ought to be recycled as scrap, in a gutter German so uncouth it couldn’t of been learned in any school. She read the readouts. Grunted, “Not a fault it’s uncovered something. Then started the pre startup diagnostics again to be ready to resume.
“Lieutenent we uncovered something.”, she called out as she moved to see what had been uncovered. The sight of rusted through metal coffins caused her stomach to lurch as their mummified contents could be seen. Disturbing the dead was a almost universal taboo. So that was bad enough. But the sight of a gelatonus substance covering the site elicited a sudden rapid backwards scuttle and a very loud high pitched horrified scream . The goo was moving. It was moving in what seemed like displeasure. Likely at having had the business end of a sonic drill pointed at it and uncovering it. and she thought hysterically that she was going to feed that damn Vulcan to this goo for omitting to tell them his drill was set up in a graveyard.

Ensign Ranlei Greene. Engineer

Simon was just about to head off to the doctor to deliver the sample when he heard Ranlei call. Turning around and coming back, he began making his way over. When she screamed, he increased his speed, making his way back to the hole. As he saw the coffins, the commbadges went off, coming from the ship.

=/\= Attention all away teams, Lt Commander Jasmijn DeVries and Junior Lieutenant Kara Iliana have fallen ill due to exposure to a local yellow plant. NE’s in medical are currently handling their allergic reactions to this plant but they for the remainder of this mission likely will be out of commission and need to be relayed back to Federation space on a runabout. To that end, Junior Lieutenant Timothy Frogue is hereby promoted to a field promotion of full Lieutenant and the position of Chief Science Officer. Currently ship side no threats have been detected with regards to the Gurdians or others in the area, though we remain on alert. All teams continue with your investigations and aide to Professor Shanok and alert me if anything further is found. If you find anything crucial to the Lawgiver’s Fifth Scroll alert me and Professor Shanok immediately so we can aide our Gurdian guests. Andone out =/\=

Simon tapped his commbadge to open a channel to both Tenzing and the captain on the ship hoping that Tenzing was also near where Shanok was, putting his hand towards his phaser defensively in his other hand as he noticed the goo gastrolate in response to their presence.

=/\=Captain, I think we’ve found something. A graveyard by first glance, some weird substance down there. Commander Tenzing, could we borrow a scientist, I think we might have found some sort unknown compound. The way it’s responding, it might even be an unidentified creature of some sort. Could you ask Shanok about gelatinous
substances here?=/\=

Looking down once again, Simon continued observing the substance for anything aggressive. “I think we should take a step back, Ensign. Just to be safe. Chavez, can you get this to Doctor Trax?” he asked, handing the sample over to him. “I’ll stay here, in case this substance is more than that,” then not getting as close when he first called but taking a defensive stance in preperation for anything, gesturing for Ranlei to step away from the drill and put some distance between them and it until they could determine more.
