It had been a year since Simon last stood outside the counsellor’s doors for a review. It was a strange experience as he never did go in the office, instead he was directed to the then XO’s office and had his review done via subspce. As a result, this was the first face-to-face review he had since the academy. He had been informed the Ark Angel had found a new counsellor, so thought it would be good to introduce himself, and as his review was due soon, to kill two birds with one stone and get that done while he was there. He pressed the chime to the counselor’s door.

Guy wasn’t all that well that day. A febrile High Temperatures was killing his will to live and indeed he requested that checks were postponed until he felt better. But the XO appointment? He preferred not jumping over it as he needed to show that he was “taking care” of his new position well and with all necessary attentions.

Covered with a light blue wool sweater, he was sipping some tea and taking medicine pills when the bell chimed “The XO? Yeah it is almost time.” He said to himself “Come In!” He groaned rubbing his forehead.

A young human man with Lieutenant pips walked into the office, easily only in his early twenties, but not older than 23, came into the room, making it interesting to see him wearing the command red and being a rather young executive officer. “First time I’ve actually been inside this room since I got here, there wasn’t a counselor assigned here when I joined,” Simon mentioned with a smile. He looked over to the counselor and noted the tea and sweater. “Everything OK, counselor?” he asked.

“Argh these days Lieutenant!” Guy cursed his sickness “nothing serious, just some High Temp, for temporary period of time. Still I haven’t heard anyone interesting about me! I solve problems for them but no “how are you?” back! Incredible.” Which such affirmation was kinda weird as himself considered to do not like peeps like that, who cared “too much” about Guy, the meat made person.
“Anyway, I could not queue your check-in to a later date. Medical logs says that you hadn’t physical sessions for a while. Ugh.”

Guy then stood up with his tea, sipping it like a old grumpy man, as his face made voice of his character. Near the replicator he ordered some pancakes, and then asked “Young, and still have a great role. What can I offer to you, Lieutenant? Do you wish something to drink or eat?”

Simon nodded “Hey, I wouldn’t be doing my job if I wasn’t looking out for the crew now, would I?” he said in response entering the office and walking over to take a seat. “It’s early so I’ll just get a caramel latte,” Simon requested, taking a seat while he waited for the counsellor.

As he sat, Simon took in the room and the decorations. When he heard the counselor mention young, he couldn’t help but smile a little. “It has been a rather fast journey up the command ladder to this point. I was just speaking to the Chief of Security, and it was only a couple of months ago that was my daily walk,” he said, it was definitely something on his mind lately due to his reaction when his age was brought up.

“Caramel Latte.” Ordered and waited. When the drink of the Lieutenant was replicated, he took it with him toward the sofa and the table he carefully kept clean, and laid down both drink and food that he was carrying. Then he sat with a grace comparable to a feather and held his old but precious wooden clipboard to start the session.

“Do you like my office? It was not that good when I took role. It seemed like an empty tin can with some piece of rock put inside just to give it weight.” He said with his usual weird comparisons “anyway…” then he paused. Guy seemed too vulnerable, too sick to work. To be honest, the sickness made him less colder than he was as his usual and permitted a more opened dialogue with him “let’s start shall we?”
Changed page to a blank one, Guy started his usual routine “talk me about yourself, how do you see yourself on this ship? And how was your career ‘till these days? Easy, Hard? A way in middle?”

“I have to admit I’m taking some inspiration, I haven’t made my new quarters home properly yet, everything has been fast, a year ago I joined out of the Academy, and already I’ve made it this far,” Simon began. “With walking back and speaking to the new chief of security, doing the old walks, and then someone I met at the academy transporting on the ship, it’s just reminded me that it’s… fast,” he admitted.

“I’m happy for you, sir.” He coughed and kept rubbing his forehead.

“As to myself, I guess since the academy, my entire career has been on the ark angel. I have to admit, there’s still things I can learn here. I guess I’m still working toward my more long-term goal, and I think going into command was the right decision. I started in Security and I’ve always thought about going into the JAG office eventually, but I want some practical experience first,” Simon explained. “My personal time has been on trying to find my brother, that’s sort of my main focus at the moment outside of my duties at least,” he continued. “And I’ll be honest, it’s been a mixture…” he said, stopping as he noticed that the counselor was looking more unwell than when the session first began. “Are you sure you are OK counselor, you look terrible. Do you want me to call sickbay?” he asked, noticing that he seemed to be ill. “After all, I want the person declaring me fit for duty to be fit for duty themselves, Lieutenant,” he said.

Lieutenant Simon Starr, XO

“Yeah, yeah, I am fine. I went for a check just before our session.” He grinned and grunted. The XO seemed to be his type: not too much confident of himself, a good dose of adventures and a story that remembered his “so returning to your… life.” Guy kept writing on his clipboard “how does- how does your brother’s search problem affects your daily life? It does not bother your role of First Officer? You know, you have strict obligations and you cannot permit that a problem, personal or not, affects your decisions involving the crew.”
His health seemed to downgrade time to time: he just hoped that the session would have ended as soon as he could. But with the XO it was not case to rush. The Captain wanted the best? He was to give the best Officer he could manage to find.

“Well, I admit I told the captain about it when I first boarded the ark angel, but it’s been six years. I typically keep any of that work to my downtime. I feel I can say enough time has passed since he went missing where it isn’t my main focus all the time anymore,” Simon answered. “As for the daily life, I keep it to working on it a day in every four, the others I spend around the ship, getting to know the rest of the crew that don’t visit the bridge too often, that sort of thing. I always found it helpful to spend time on one thing, but not to consume yourself in it. I guess that’s the security officer still in me saying that you need to be ready for action at a moments notice,” he told Guy, smiling slightly at the last part of his statement.

Guy kept writing. Then he looked at what he wrote and made like a nod “alright. Let me know another thing, what do you expect from this kind of life, the life of Starfleet officer? Of course meant in the near future as you are already living the “Officer” life. Are you planning to rank up and get yourself in service as captain on a ship?”
As he noticed, Mr. Starr seamed to be already to be fit. But to be sure, Guy wanted to ask some more question even if it meant, less time to rest.
