The behaviour of Eve was certainly something that made Guy smile: “she” was pretty much acting like a true woman and that thing almost made him think he was talking to a human, but she wasn’t. “My day??” he asked confused “oh well… My day.” He looked at the door on their left like he wanted to escape “well my day was like a normal one, I guess. I got up, I ate pancakes with honey and then started my usual job routine: talk to the Captain, some talk with the XO about the psychological status of the crew, some talk with some problematic couple and some with new recruits.” Guy paused “Damn, today I talked a lot! Yeah…” Nervous, pretty much tired, it wasn’t a good moment that but it was still a patient and he agreed to talk to her. As he made another pause, he stood up and ordered a glass of water this time and started drinking it as he walked slowly back to his place “…Then I lunched, lonely as I took the habit to eat without anyone. Had some more hours with weird and exhausting people and now, there you are. We are talking. Just it.” another water sip and then Guy leaned forward “How was YOUR day, Eve?” the Lieutenant asked as he looked at the two glasses put on the table and laid down the third one with still some water in it. Back to stare the Synth, he felt really like it wasn’t that hard after all, and so he relaxed on the sofa and awaited some sort of reply.

Lieutenant Freeman, Guy - Chief Counselor Officer

As the Counselor described his day, the android’s face cycled through various appropriate emotional configurations - a gentle smile when he mentioned pancakes, empathetic sorrow when he described eating alone and lonely and finally concern when he mentioned being surrounded by ‘weird and exhausting people’. Eve wondered, momentarily, if he considered her weird and exhausting and silently activated her social manners subroutine in an attempt to decipher whether her arriving at his office in this manner had broken some kind of cultural custom or otherwise demonstrated ‘bad behaviour’.

Simultaneously to this, she launched into a verbal answer to his question. “My day was like a normal one…for an android. I got up, or more precisely, I activated my movement routines. I possess no ability for sleep but I am able to hibernate all but my core systems when my presence is not required. And in those moments you will find me as quiet as a mouse,” she grinned.

“Damn creepy realistic..” Guy seemingly whispered in the nothing as the Android grinned and made that sortie of faces “Ahem, sorry what you were saying?” he kept sipping water as the dialogue kept going.

Her story continued after a brief pause. “I considered eggs and bacon for breakfast, but then I am unable to consume protein and instead mimicked eating an entire plate of it. After that, I proceeded to the engineering deck to check in with my department head. Lt Miz’uki is a Caitian,” her narrative suddenly veered off course, like a magpie distracted by a new, shiny object. “Her skin is soft and furry. Not at all like mine. Or yours. And she has the fluffiest tail I have ever seen!”

“Hey!” Guy felt subject of something important, which it was totally not “My skin is pretty soft… YEAH and well, what an amazement Eve. First time I ever heard an android talking about stuff that is not… work. I admit I wanted sometimes to pet the Lieutenant. I always loved cats.” he rubbed his chin “BUT, but but but, don’t say it to Miz’uki. It can be misinterpreted.” the Lieutenant seemed to blush

“I have always desired to own a kitten,” Eve replied, her cerulean blue ocular implants sparkling as if with excitement. Or perhaps it was merely a power surge that, momentarily, overloaded the LED’s. “But I shall concur with your advice and refrain from petting my Chief. My social etiquette programming suggests that action would be deemed…inappropriate.”

“So tell me Eve, what do you do in your free time?” The counsellor was having pretty fun. His face kept moving, making expression that almost no one has ever seen: happy, intrigued, curious. He seemed another person, not the usual Jerk.

As he waited for the Synth to reply, he was already thinking to invite her, or it, to join him into some kind of holodeck BBQ program. Perhaps he yet had the scientist soul and loved to test stuff, like a scientist is clearly interested into new discoveries. “will she like it?” he kept thinking “maybe not? Maybe she has no hobby at all.” he kept dreaming.

“I engage in many activities in my free time, Counselor,” the android replied. “I am currently reading several novels, Alice in Wonderland, Eldaxon’s Collected Folklore, The Dream of Fire and Clash on the Fire Plains. I am also interested in the various holodeck programs that you humanoids seem to enjoy creating, especially ones of a recreational nature. When I was stationed on the USS Draco, the counselor took me to a holo-location called ‘Winter Wonderland’, where I learned how to build a man out of snow and how to launch spherical compactions of ice at my companions.”

“Ugh, even a synth has more hobby than a human.” Guy thought aloud moving is sigh up and down like he was tired of something “So, you actually have some interest in humanity. Interesting, Eve. And those spherical compactions are actually called snowballs.” He chuckled “you see, we human being and all kind of aliens needs some fun every once. Throwing snowballs can be a funny experience and just fulfill what we need: some time for ourselves. Do you understand?”

“Fun,” Eve repeated. “Yes, I do understand the requirement for fun. My observations have often revealed humanoids to act in a markedly different manner when engaged in fun than when performing their duties. It is a most fascinating transformation and one which I enjoy studying. You could say that I find the observation of fun to be…fun.”

Did the android attempt to make a joke in that moment? Or was her peculiar verbal syntax merely masquerading as such?

Eve’s expression, as she recalled her experiences on the Draco, indicated that she still did not fully understand the purpose of such snowbound activities, but that she had derived a certain degree of satisfaction from them all the same.

“Listen, would you like to come with me some day in the holodeck? Last time I entirely enjoyed some time with someone else was long time ago.” Guy proposed “Some BBQ experience, far diverse and interesting in its own way. Just you and me, and maybe some kind of entertainment. Do you know how to play poker?”
The Lieutenant leaned forward as he crossed his arms and legs.

“I would love to come to the holodeck,” Eve exclaimed, the pitch of her vocal tone elevating slightly in a manner that might have suggested excitement and joy in a non-synthetic lifeform. “I have never experienced a B.B.Q.”
She fell silent for three nanoseconds and then continued with, “A barbeque, informally referred to by the letters B, B and Q, barbie or braai, is a cooking method, a grilling device, a style of food, and a name for a meal or gathering at which this style of food is cooked and served. It sounds most delightful, Counselor!”

Briefly, a concentrated furrowing of Eve’s eyebrows suggested the android was engaging in rigorous evaluation as she stated, “I am not, however, familiar with the rules of poker. But I can study them prior to the event.”
