“I would love to come to the holodeck,” Eve exclaimed, the pitch of her vocal tone elevating slightly in a manner that might have suggested excitement and joy in a non-synthetic lifeform. “I have never experienced a B.B.Q.”
She fell silent for three nanoseconds and then continued with, “A barbeque, informally referred to by the letters B, B and Q, barbie or braai, is a cooking method, a grilling device, a style of food, and a name for a meal or gathering at which this style of food is cooked and served. It sounds most delightful, Counselor!”

“Yes, the Barbecue is lots of fun especially when you do have people you enjoy around. So I am glad you will come and learn something new. If you wish, I can…” he stopped a bit clearing his voice “invite… the crew…” he looked up the ceiling and then again the android “ugh, it will be surely awkward.”

“I am not yet acquainted with many of the crew,” Eve replied, the angle of her inner neck-joint decreasing to lower her head and her gaze towards her lap. “I…I am unable to predict how they will react to my presence.”

“You’ll be fine…” he kept going nervously “I am the man that should’ve problems with them. But I mean… in the end their the crew and we need to live with them, right?” He giggled

There was a degree of trepidation evident in the vocal and physical mannerisms of the android in that moment, almost as if she were nervous about meeting the remainder of the crew.

Briefly, a concentrated furrowing of Eve’s eyebrows suggested the android was engaging in rigorous evaluation as she stated, “I am not, however, familiar with the rules of poker. But I can study them prior to the event.”

“Sure thing, Eve. Just please, remember that everyone wants to have fun at poker so if you start winning all the time… well that is not that fun anymore.” He smiled “but everything has its time to be learnt!” As he stood up and went taking his PaDD, he took also a pack of card and handed it to Eve with some poker fiches “This is what we need for poker. You can use my beloved Bycicle 20th Century pack to start learning, and the fiches to know the currency we will use. So when do you want to do this sort of party?” He asked anxious.

Lieutenant Freman, Guy - Chief Counselor Officer

The android raised her head once more and studied Guy with an expression mimicking intense confusion. “But Counselor, what is the purpose of the game if not to win?”

“You see, Eve, when we play with some other players, we love taking risks. It’s what makes something fun, with some certain levels of degree Of course. There are people that enjoy making Space Pod Racing, which sometimes is a lot more dangerous than anything else, some instead love be chill and play cards like me.” He started explaining “If you just use math to calculate the odds of winning, you’re kinda cheating. Is like taking a short way in the pod racing avoiding obstacles and the threats to arrive first and practically ignore everyone’s effort to get the first place. At the same way, if you use statistics, you are cutting through the game and you take away the uncertainty which is a factor that makes everything that exciting. A veil of mystery that poses everyone at the same level, so everyone can actually try to win. Yeah maybe someone have played or raced that thing since he was… 10 or something? They are exceptions.” He paused “What I mean, is that repetitive wins are not that fun because invites others to leave the game. They think they cannot beat you, and thus just leave the game because it’s just annoying.”
At the end of the explanation, Guy looked at Eve with an eye of curiosity. He was not that good at explaining, and whether the synth had received the concept remained a Mystery.

Eve’s lips upturned into a smile although the parallel narrowing of her ocular frames added a degree of mischievousness to the expression.
“I understand, Sir,” she replied. “It is like the ancient Terran hypothetical, Schrodinger’s Cat. One can never ascertain precisely, unless one opens the box, whether the cat is alive or dead. Similarly, if you best me in a game, you will be unable to determine whether your own skill was superior to mine or whether I simply allowed you to win.”

And in that moment, it was conceivable that Freeman might also be unable to determine whether the android was being wholly serious or instead mimicking the age-old tradition known as ‘teasing’.

Carefully lifting the precious card pack, Eve once more smiled at Freeman. “As I have no requirement for sleep and currently no other recreational activities in my calendar, I am available for this…party…at the conclusion of my shift tomorrow, which is twenty-hundred hours. Provided that your duties have also concluded at that time.”

The Lieutenant smiled and took the glasses of empty Martini toward the replicator, where they were dissolved and vanished in some engineering circuitry. When he was finally at his desk, he took the PaDD checking for his shifts hours which were not that full that week “It can be done. I finish at 1900 tomorrow.” He said “We can adjust for the 2030 hours? Is that ok? Or you need to change clothes, something?” He didn’t knew what androids made after work “I’ll invite just a few of the crew. It will be good for both of us. For me to avoid the entirety of them. For you to start knowing them. Alright?” He asked.

Lieutenant Freeman, Guy - Chief Counselor Officer

Rising to her feet, the android flashed the counselor her most accomplished smile yet, as with an air of ebullience, she returned his final word. “Alright!”
