Ensign Genard had come aboard his new assignment with several other crew replacements. This Mythology class explorer was easily the biggest ship he had ever been aboard, and he was quietly excited to start this new chapter in his Star Fleet career. While the intake officer was explaining some protocol he already knew, Claude took stock of the assembled Junior Officers and enlisted crewmen. He easily noticed he was the eldest member in the room. At 1.8 meters he wasn’t that tall, but his dark curly hair and goatee seemed to set him apart somewhat from this younger counterparts.

Finally the presentation was over and he was free to enter freely the majestic USS Ark Angel. With a room assignment in hand, he wasn’t too happy to see his quarters were Deck 11. In fact most of this group was assigned to Deck 11, crewman and officer alike. Not an elitist, but Genard knew what it was like to work your way up, not to have a commission given to you just because you finished the Academy. He had hoped his experience would garner him a different assignment.
‘But things are just starting, Claude.’ he told himself, ‘Do a good job and you’ll be rewarded with a better room assignment.’

Ah, his assigned quarters at last. This would be his home away from home hopefully for a few years. With a deep calming breath he entered the door. His assigned quarters was a duel occupancy, and his roommate had already arrived. He quietly dropped is duffel bag on his bunk and went to extend his hand to his roommate.
“Hello, Claude Genard. From Terra.”

  • Ens. Genard.

Riley looked over as his new roommate approached and stood to greet him. “Hi! Matthew Riley.” He grinned. “Also from Earth.” He shook the man’s hand, then gestured around. “I don’t have much stuff, so take as much space as you need.”

Claude smiled. He didn’t have much with him, but his luggage would arrive soon enough. All he really had immediately was in his duffel.

A small shelf sat over his bed, a handful of books on it; the desk beside his bed had a PADD on it; another rested on the seat he had just vacated. Riley scrunched up his face and pointed to the food slot. “The replicator hasn’t been activated. I’ve submitted a service ticket and am waiting for an engineer to stop by.”

Claude turned to look towards the non-working replicator. A necessity for sure. “Well once it’s activated I’m sure I will need to tweak the pea soup recipe. It’s never as good as to what I could get at home. It’s a small comfort.”

Riley grinned. “Nothing ever is exactly right. I love a good pea soup, so I can’t wait to try yours out.”

“Science as well, Matthew. Or do you prefer Matt?” Claude inquired. It is always good to get off on the right foot with anyone, most especially one whom you will be living with. “I saw on the ship’s roster that our department head is new as well.”

“So, you stated you have been aboard a few days. What’s your take on the ship? What is she like…generally?”

  • Ens. Genard

“Please, call me Matthew,” he replied with a smile, and then nodded. “Yeah, Lieutenant Fayth was just promoted to the role. She’s a very direct woman, but friendly. Specializes in botany and biology. I think she’ll be good to work under.”

He exhaled slowly, chewing on his lip as he considered the second question. “Well… the Angel is big. The boss told me to add 10 minutes to however long I might think it will take to get anywhere, and she’s not wrong. Other than that…” He shrugged and gave a wry grin. “Haven’t really had the chance to do that much yet. Checked in with the loot, the doc, and the counselor, and started a project for the boss.”

His eyes suddenly widened and shone, and his voice was higher pitched. “Oh, but the science labs. Hands down the best I’ve ever seen.”

  • Ensign Riley, Science

“Thank you for that tip about the walking time. I figured as much with a ship this big.” He added with a smile. “Speaking of the labs, I better check in with Lieutenant Fayth myself sometime today. But first, I need to unpack and put a few things away. Besides, I’ve been on a transport for a few days with not a lot of walking room and I could use a bit on my feet stretching my legs.”

Claude crossed to his side of the room and started to unpack his duffel. “What about yourself? Where are you from, besides Terra?”

  • Ens. Genard.
