The reply by communicator surprised him. She must be somewhere safe, he mused, lifting his PADD and compiling the data before sending it off to her, highlighting the tachyon emissions from the Montezuma and the timing of the energy spike in relation to the visual disturbance. “Still waiting on NEnsign Shannon’s short range results on the radiation patch,” he added at the end.

The typed reply was quick in return. Thank you for your discression, Riley. I’m on the bridge if you need anything else. As soon as you have the results or any new information let me know.

The radiation patch, apart from not being on a direct course from the Montezuma to the Ark Angel, was nothing unusual. It was a transient cloud of ions that probably got pulled together by the tail of a comet or the passing of a small planetoid or large asteroid.

As NEnsign Shannon gestured at the results and pointed out characteristics, Riley frowned. So why did they head through it? he wondered. “Thank you, Shannon.” He patted the man on his shoulder. “You can continue what you were doing. If I need anything else, I’ll let you know.”

Riley wandered away slowly, focusing on his PADD, putting together the data for his boss. When he got back to the main table with the holo-display of the nebula still up he stared at it, spinning his stylus. He stopped after a few rotations of the stylus and tapped it to his lower lip, then sent the compiled data, and tucked the PADD under his arm, hitting the off switch for the table with his free hand. “I’ll be available via comms if anyone needs me,” he said as he left the lab. Not that anyone will need me, he reminded himself. They’re a pretty self-sufficient bunch.
