Tabris nodded and ripped the page of fabrics out from his notebook as he wrote down some other ideas, his thoughts were more of a reflection on his past in this field ‘Customers always go through designs Tabris, it’s nothing personal. This is why you got out of the business but Sharah isn’t some snooty Hartford pampered wife, she’s just giving honest feedback.’ He then spoke as he finished his notes “How about a cotton or gingham? Maybe Linen? Or what about a wearable canvas? And I was only thinking the burlap on accents to give a bit of texture, but I totally understand that it’s not the most comfortable fabric.” He thought a little more about the wood choices, ‘She might not claim to know about design but those are very complimentary woods, I’ll have to be careful though, the ebony can make the room feel dark if it’s used too much.’ As he spoke again he said, “So while I cannot replace the bulkhead I can add the wood on top of it, so the room will shrink a little but it’ll give you that cabin feel. Would you like the Red Elm and Forest Cherry in the walls or were you thinking the Elm on the ceiling given that it’s a lighter color and will brighten the space. Any thoughts to flooring?”

Sharah contemplated what he was asking. “I’d like the red elm on the walls, like at home. Could it be on both the wall and ceiling? Or do you suggest something else? And I know the ebony is dark, would it work for the floor? Or would that ruin the effect?” She looked at the picture and the floors were a dark stained oak, but she thought the ebony would substitute in its place, but she wasn’t sure. “I’m okay with the room being smaller. It feels too big. I know the point is to make it comfortable because it was designed for deep space, but…” she let the thought trail off. “I like those fabric choices,” she commented and then had another thought. “So this cabin,” she holds up the PaDD with the picture, “is actually on the gulf coast of the North American continent. It’s not in the woods. I don’t really want a nautical theme, but could we bring some of those colors into the design?”

Tabris nodded as he looked at the photos as well, “It wouldn’t ruin the effect at all! It used be somewhat fashionable to have your ceiling a different color, but there’s nothing wrong with having it all red elm it will look lovely. As for the floor, that rich streaked ebony would look lovely if we did a offset plank. just let me know if you want it parallel or perpendicular to the door.” Tabris said as he studied the photo more, “Of course I’m a little less familiar with the gulf coast as I was raised on the pacific coast but I’ll do my best.” Tabris looked through his books and said “Why don’t you take a look at the Pantone collections Ethereal Material, Transitions, and Deep Rooted and let me know what you think of those. And I’m glad you like the fabrics, we can do plenty with it. Now let’s talk furniture? Am I safe to guess you want to keep the rustic look? What pieces do you want to have?”

Ensign Tabris Asam, Eng

Sharah listened to his recommendations for the wall ceiling and floor and nodded her agreement. “I think parallel to the door.” She looked at the Pantone collections. She looked at them carefully considering the colors and the space they would be in, as well as the wood and texture choices they had discussed so far. “Transitions for the main room and the Ethereal for the bedroom.” Sharah looked around the room. “Yes more natural and rustic. Really I would like the same pieces of furniture, but in a rustic style. I would like something like this as well.” She picked up the PaDD again pointing toward the back of the picture. There was a kitchen, separated from the rest of the room by a small rectangular table. There was a counter, sink, stove top and oven as well as a fridge. “I’m still learning, but I like to cook.”
Lt. jg Fayth, CSO

Tabris nodded as he rubbed the side of his face in thought. “You know I don’t have anything to go off of at the moment but I have your request here for those holo emitters, I can whip up something that we can project over your existing furniture when those come in and I can show you a few examples in the room.” He said as he jotted some ideas down on his notebook. He leaned close to the picture, adjusting his glasses some as a sly smile grew from the corners of his mouth. “You know cooking, like actually cooking, is somewhat of a lost art these days. With easy access to all of culinary possibility with a verbal command, no one is afraid of being hit with hot grease from fresh bacon sizzling in the pan.”

“Using the holographics to see what it would look like would be fun, but no need to leave them. I can deal with the standard furniture until. Honestly I didn’t think I’d get more than a color change on the walls.” She laughs just a bit. “So far I haven’t burned myself with the grease, but I wouldn’t be surprised if I do.”

Tabris thought about how silly it was as a ‘right of passage’ but chuckled a little as he replied, I figured the holo emitters would be helpful for you in choosing designs, but after you picked I’d set them up in the windows. As for the grease? It’s something that happens to all cooks sadly, I’ve got plenty of little pock marks from when I worked in fast food as a kid.”

Looking over the appliances Tabris said, “Just so you know I can model the appliances just as they are here but the workings will be a little different. Given safety requirements and such I cannot install outlets like they would have had back when I was a kid on earth, instead the units will be hard wired into a central low power fusion cell, like they use on the school, which will ensure your food stays cold and the oven / stove works properly. Now that being said I’m sure you already realize I can’t give you a gas stove given the potential for disaster, but I’ll get you the best electric one I can. Oh and regarding the fusion cell. Given the electrical demands of these appliances, one low power cell will be enough to power them for at least 150 years if you left them on all day long. I’ll have to figure out how to hook up the sink, I’m thinking I can get a spare replicator and hook it up to a pump and install something of a potentiometer in each handle for the faucet. Each of those would be linked to the replicator and pump which would activate a command for the replicator to produce cold or hot water and the pump would simulate it flowing from the tap…” Tabris said as he thought, “I’m sorry I’m rambling. I can happily make that kitchen for you.”

Sharah was a little lost following the Tabris’ specs. “Well electric is fine, I don’t know how to cook with gas.” A look of fear actually passes over her face. Though Tabris wouldn’t know why. The idea of cooking or being in charge of something with a live flame sounds like a disaster waiting to happen for Sharah. Get overwhelmed at the wrong time with open flame around…”And there is already a sink in my quarters so I can just use that if it’s too much work.”

Tabris wanted to reach out and comfort the lieutenant, “Cooking with gas is a pleasure, but you need to know it’s dangers. Something you can work up to eventually if ya like, otherwise electric is perfectly fine!” Tabris said reassuringly as he had totally forgotten about the water already to the sink. “The sink of course… I might just tap into those pipes, I’m sorry I got carried away. But my replicator idea would also work and involve less tearing into bulkheads.”

He sketched down some ideas and followed up with, “What do you like to cook?”

Ensign Tabris Asam, Eng

“I made a lemon chicken with farfalle pasta once. The pasta looked aweful! But it did taste good. Mostly I am learning breakfast. I can make French toast and pancakes and bacon. That’s about it. Do you cook, ensign?”
Lt jg Fayth, CSO

He smiled as he said, “I have been a professional cook for a little while and I’ve cooked my meals as much as I can for the past few centuries. Replicators were interesting when they were new and always gave food a flavour that was just always a little off, I’m sure they’re fine now but I remember when they were the newest thing. And you know, cooking is something that has many schools of thought. You have what I can cook that looks like a train wreck.” Tabris said, using that old phrase as if the Lieutenant knew what trains were, “Btu they taste delicious! Then you have the fancy meals that are all about presentation. I’d be happy to give you some pointers if you get stuck. I like to cook the flavors of when I was a kid, my family was hiding out on Earth and we lived in a neighborhood of diverse humans. The culinary traditions of the areas they came from such as Morocco, Libya, India, Israel, Laos and many more influence my current tastes.”
