The alarm went off now for the last time and Tabris thought, no, he was positive that it was getting annoyed with how many times the Ensign had hit the delay option. Rousing himself from his slumber the middle aged looking El-Aurian stretched, his 400 year old bones creaking and crackling as he stood. While his vision was blurry Tabris rubbed them a bit as he made his way to the sonic shower and said, “Computer? Please replicate me a hazlenut coffee at 58 degrees Celsius. Thank you.” While it was somewhat out of place these days, Tabris had always tried to be polite to whomever he was asking something of, real, cybernetic, or otherwise. After getting himself clean Tabris put his uniform on, his glasses, and sipped away at the coffee before realizing it was exactly 20 minutes after he thought it was. He nearly fell over as he jolted up from the table, gulped his coffee down and haphazardly tossed the cup on the table. He grabbed his vintage 2265 era PADD loaded with his transfer orders, certificates, and areas of expertise, as well as letter of recommendation and rushed out the door.

Entering main engineering was no easy feat as while Tabris would claim he studied the schematics over and over, he certainly would be lying and got himself mixed up twice while trying to get here. He looked down at his wrist, a 1971 Micky Mouse Timex watch strapped to his wrist. He had 30 seconds to be at the CE’s door and he barely let the doors open wide enough before his eyes darted around finding the door and bolting to it in the most dignified way a man with now 22 seconds to move could. He rang the chime, 4 seconds to spare as he wiped his brow with his sleeve as he stood at attention.

Mazi turned as the doors to engineering swished open. She was at the main console table just inside and, had she been one or two more feet to the right, she would have been bowled over by the new Ensign rushing to the Chief’s office. A smile lit her lips as her hand rose to scratch just in front of her antennae. As a half Andorian, she had the telltale antennae. Unfortunately, she had never grown as comfortable, as most, with them. Their quick erratic motion sometimes irritated her cause she couldn’t stop it anymore than she could stop a sneeze or an itch.

“You can breathe, you know,” she said to the man with a smile. “And she doesn’t bite. At least, not on the first day. Usually,” she grinned once more in a light teasing tone. She wanted the poor kid to relax and wondered if she was ever that skittish when she was new.

Tabris heard the voice of another and quickly turned with a smile, “Well I’m glad to hear the chief doesn’t bite, but I’m afraid punctuality isn’t a skill I’ve mastered in the last 400 years and today is yet another example of that!” The man chuckled as he let the tension drain from him slowly. “Tabris Asam” He said holding out a hand with a smile, “Of all the careers I’ve had, I can’t say I’ve felt as rushed as I do in Starfleet. Even back before humans passed the warp barrier life seemed to be a little slower.” He shifted the antique PADD to his other hand as he waited for the Chief to welcome him as he looked around at the various stations, “The last Starfleet ship I was on was the USS Panama back in 2289 and that seemed giant at the time. And here I am on a ship over twice the size.” Tabris remarked, as the USS Panama was a Constitution Refit class that he had boarded somewhat illegally. But that was a story for another time.

The shock on Mazi’s face was evident as he mentioned being more than 400 years old. She laughed and recovered with a shrug. “Well, perhaps this next 400 years will find you that punctuality. No point in learning and mastering everything in your first four or five centuries, is there? Where’s the fun in that?” She was shaking her head, not believing she was joking with someone who was far younger looking than her yet had lived an incomprehensible number of years. As her laughter died, her smile softened. “Well, she may be big, but there are bigger. And I’m happy you show you around any time you want. You’ll need to learn the ship, anyway, right? Can’t exactly be an engineer and not able to find the other decks.” She winked at him, her antennae twitching lightly in amusement.

Her right hand rose absently, once more, to scratch her head where the skin stretched from their movement and she nodded to the office. “Once the Chief is done with you, lemme know. I’ll be around. I’ll give you the quick tour then buy you lunch. How’s that?” She nodded over her shoulder to indicate she’d be in engineering somewhere once he was done with the CE.
