She’d already checked with the computer to see where Caelin was and Mazi was headed there now. She had been impressed with his performance on their last mission and here, some time later, she had realized she’d never told him. Scratching her forhead in front of her antennae, she wanted to swat at the blasted things. She had been thinking of Cel all morning and had finally gotten the nerve to locate him. Thankfully, they were both off today so it seemed as good a time as any.

Her clothing was more Earthlike in structure than Andorian. She had on a tunic top of emerald green that sported short sleeves and hung to her hips in front and almost the back of her legs in back. Under it were a pair of light brown leggings tucked into boots of an almost equal brown that came up her calves. She had on two simple gold bangles on her right wrist and a necklace that matched with a deep green stone resting on her chest at its point.

She headed down the corridors of the Angel with not so much an excited pace as a determined one. She was going to get to know the man who had come to her rescue in the hanger bay with his suggestions on the anomalous readings the others were getting in regards to the Montezuma.

Prismatic streams of light blurred before his eyes, reflected faintly along the curve of the glass in his hand in scintillant lines. Even though he’d spent the majority of his life aboard a starship, travel at warp speeds had always held a certain fascination for him. The idea of being able to travel faster-than-light had been a dream to Weirs of long-ago; for him, it was commonplace. It was one of the things that kept him rooted more firmly in the engineering field: the chance to study and experiment with different ways to push humanity further, to explore all the universe had to offer. The view from his favorite chair in Deck 17 Forward both calmed and inspired him.

He took another sip of his tarkalean tea and made a face at the bitterness. Just like home, he thought fondly, picking up his PaDD. He glanced over the lines of text displayed, then keyed the PaDD dark, set it down. Caelian’s gaze drifted back out through the viewport, and he smiled. A ship at warp had never given him vertigo, he realized. If the Ark Angel had been at impulse, he’d would have had to have faced inward to not lose his lunch. Another benefit of warp travel.

Each of those gossamer streaks was a star, and each star held at least a handful of satellites in its gravitational grip. Perhaps even full-fledged planets. Blurred as they were, his eye could not make out more than just a flicker of light before it was gone. Would he even notice the gleam of Sol were it to race by? It was a sobering thought, that every star and planet was somehow equal to the passage of a traveling starship. He shifted in his chair a bit, kicking an ankle up onto his knee and taking another bitter sip of tea. Letting out a deep sigh, Caelian tried to slow the gears of his mind. Those, too, were cruising along at warp speeds, each one no more distinguishable than the lights beyond the viewport.

Mazi came into 17 Forward and glanced around. The computer had told her the man was here. And sure enough, staring out the window in a fashion she often found her own gaze doing, leaning back with tea, she spied the man she sought out.

Getting a glass of fruit juice, having had enough tea for the day to drown a small colony, she came wide around him so to appear in the edge of his vision and not startle him coming up too close behind. “You’re Weir, aren’t you? Caelian? I’m Mazi. We spoke briefly when you arrived. Mind if I join you?” She glanced out the window a moment then back to him with a smile. “Or am I intruding on thoughts?”

She felt her antennae seeming to want to keep looking out the window as if there was some fascination out there for them. At least, that’s what it felt like and she scratched her forehead absently at the pull.

Caelian took a sip of his tea as the Andorian hove into view, eyeing him curiously. It was almost comical, the way she leaned as if to peek at him like a curious bird. The antennae on her brow twitched towards the viewport. He swallowed around a chuckle, set his tea down, and stood up.

“No, sir,” he replied, gesturing to the seat opposite his at the small table. “You’re not interrupting at all. I was just reviewing tomorrow’s duty schedule.”

He nodded towards the viewport, at the flurry of starlight rushing towards and past them. “The view helps me process my thoughts, like white noise for the eyes.”

He smiled politely, sat down when she took the offered seat. “Either ‘Weir’ or ‘Caelian’ works fine, depending on the need for brevity. ‘Ensign,’ if we’re on-duty. Is there something I can help you with, sir?”
—Caelian Weir, Ensign—

Mazi waved her hand as he rose. “No, please, sit. And it’s Mazi. Well, unless the Captain is around and it’s official, then LT works.” She settled into the vacant offered seat and watched him settle back down. I wanted to introduce myself since we’re on the same shift this rotation. I’ve seen the work you’ve done so far. Great job. A couple more of you and we may be able to kick half the lazy folks out of Engineering and run the ship ourselves.” She smiled and took a sip of her drink. At his comment about the view, she sighed. “I guess white noise for the eyes is appropriate. I never thought about it. We’re either at Warp, or we aren’t. I haven’t honestly paid attention either way in a long time except to make a mental note so when things go wrong, I know what I’m getting into.”

She glanced at the PaDD he had been looking at. “You settling in all right? Any issues with other engineers, or your shift or anything?” She wanted to be sure everyone on her shift was as close to ‘happy’ as she could make them because it make spending hours together a bit more bearable day in and day out.
