As Demil and Katie got up onto Deck 38 they saw the blob had moved down the corridor and was currently 200 feet down the way and slithering its way into Arboretum 3 on the deck.

“Why in heaven’s name do we have an Arboretum?”

“Many ships in the fleet have ‘special features’,” Katie said as they ran after the blob. “I did a training cruise on a ship that had a dolphin pool. I never understood why they had that one either.”

The creature disappeared into the Arboretum and once they got to the doorway, Katie paused and held out her hand.

“I think we should proceed with caution,” Katie said.

Demil nodded in agreement.

The Arboretum was an unusually large room that looked much like some of the parks near the Academy on Earth. There was a wide variety of trees and grass on either side of a path that disappeared among the plants. “A bigger question for me at least than why we have an arboretum is why is this blob thing interested in it.”

“It has proven attracted by energy sources. Photosynthesis is essentially energy production,” Demil noted. “Or perhaps it can sense that this room is filled with various lifeforms? Either way we should get it out of here. We don’t know how it could affect the plants or vice versa.”

Katie put her fingertips to her mouth and thought for a moment.

“I don’t disagree with you but, given that the ship is under attack, where do we want it?” she said. She turned and faced Lis. “I feel like we’re missing something important here. What do we know about this thing? It grows. It moves and those movements don’t seem to be random. Does the fact it attacked us and came here mean it is an intelligent life-form? Maybe it came here to hide. Or something completely innocuous.”

Katie turned again and spotted a blobby tendril wrapped around one of the trees.

“And there it is.”

The 10ft square blob was indeed wrapping several tendrils around several of the larger trees, plants, and bushes from a glance it looked like the blob was ‘feeding’ on the life producing qualities of the plants. In essence it was slowly killing them it seemed. However one of the tendrils was wrapped around one of the largest trees in the middle of the arboretum. It was a hybrid tree made from a strain of Earth’s giant red woods, with a Klingon tree of similar quality. The result was a tree which produced a neurotoxin which in small doses could be used medically to naturally cure various low grade poisons when processed by the ship’s medical staff. However, in larger doses it was known to be toxic to some life forms with higher intelligence ratings, producing a sort of ‘pyscho/rage’ effect. Depending how knowledgeable either of the ensigns were, they might know that in earlier days of Klingon culture this toxin was used by the Klingons to produce such effects in their warriors during larger battles.

The hybrid tree in this case it seems as the blob ‘fed’ on it seemed to pulse oddly, going from a semi-orange/golden color to a more deeper orange-red color as they watched. They could also literally see tiny spiderweb like tendrils of what were likely the blob’s nervous system or the like pulsate as well inside it. Suddenly the blob’s tendrils seemed to yank out the lesser trees and started tearing up other bushes, in turn other tendrils spouted out of the main body and began to fight the wild tendrils. Or in turn the wild tendrils started slapping the main body! It was like the blob was at once fighting itself and trying to reign in itself.

As a result both ensigns would need to be on a duck and move positioning around the larger room, both to avoid any of the tendrils flailing in and out of the main body and to avoid rooted up bushes, plants, and the like. Now they just had to figure out how to contain, capture, or do something with this thing, because the last thing they noticed with all this feeding was it was growing larger, now rising up to about 13 or so feet in square like shape.

=/\= “Lis to Stacey,” Demil said, tapping his badge as he rolled under a swinging tendril. “How do we neutralize the SorQeH neurotoxin?”=/\= To Katie, he shouted “Be ready to get this thing out any way we can!”

“Get it out to where?” Kate shouted back. Was it just an optical illusion or had this thing actually gotten bigger since they had entered the oversized room with it? A tendril came dangerously close as she checked on the presence of force-field emitters in the arboretum. She frowned as she got the expected result; the main doorway and the outer hull were the only emitters in the area. They might be able to trap the thing in here but they couldn’t subdivide the space. Another tendril swatted out at her, this one actually cutting through the sleeve of radiation suit she was wearing.

“This thing is almost too big to get through the corridors as it is,” she said retreated from the gigantic blob. For a moment, the thing appeared to follow her. “Maybe we could get it to chase us into the corridor. We might have a better chance of trapping it there.”

“Good idea. We might be able to get a site-to-site transport on it too.”
