V’alura Belmont drifted, afloat upon a giant pool inflatable shaped like a thick orange slice. She wore a sunset-orange wrap swimsuit that matched the alcoholic drink currently in her hand. The drink was in a tall glass and shifted from bright red at the bottom to sharp orange at the top and was complete with a sprig of mint and a wedge of lime. It wasn’t actual alcohol but instead synthanol. She wished it was real alcohol though, but she couldn’t go through her entire stash of real wine in one night. It would have to do.

A brother. . . She had a half-brother, and he was also in Starfleet. They shared a father. V’alura’s fingers clenched around the glass so tight it was a miracle she didn’t shatter it. She was half-vulcan, it made her stronger than the average human. If she gripped it just a little harder it would crack, and that one little crack would form another, and those cracks would further splinter. Liquid would seep into the openings and there would go the glass. V’alura almost wanted the glass to shatter. Instead, she took a drink and tried to pretend that it could get her drunk.

That man didn’t just hurt her momma, but he hurt other women as well. Leaving them only with children he had no intention of raising or acknowledging. Were there other half-siblings out there? Did that man also break the heart of Solal’s mother? So many questions buzzed in her head. Why couldn’t it have been the cheery buzz of alcohol? That haze that made the world soft and fun. V’alura keenly missed New York in that moment. There was always some place to escape too. Ships weren’t so good with that. V’alura drifted atop her pool float, and figured it was good enough.

V’alura felt many things in that moment. Shock. Anger. And no small portion of guilt. Solal never wanted to know anything about his biological family. She knew that. She knew that and yet she asked him to contribute a DNA sample to medical research that would only benefit her. How could she be so selfish? What was wrong with her? V’alura sipped her drink and thought about that for a long while. Was she a bad person?

At about that moment a large shadow passed over V’alura. As ensign luna flew overhead. Her wings barley made a sound as she moved effortlessly throw the air. The only thing anousing her presence was the shadow. She landed a good ways away from V’alura in the water. Again she made vary little noise as she broke the surface of the water.

On a closer look V’alira would be greeted by Luna. Rumors of the blonde security officer had to have spread throw the ship by now. Her nearly 10-foot white and black spotted wings were now folded neatly against her back. She had a dark blue swim site on. She relaxed and looked around at the surroundings. She noted V’alura but did not approach her if the other women wanted to talk she would.

V’alura’s gaze had followed the shadow that passed over watching the winged woman land upon the water like a delicate swan alighting upon the surface of its home lake. Goodness those wings were pretty, speckled like a bird’s egg and so soft looking. V’alura realized she was staring and averted her gaze. She looked down at the drink in her hand, nearly half gone now. Did she feel like talking? Yes. No. Maybe? Just moments ago did she not yearn for the comforts of her old home and the many ways one could escape from reality? New York, the city that never sleeps, and where you could find anything you needed. Perhaps, V’alura mused, that being alone with her thoughts would only make her more miserable?

I should feel miserable, she thought. I should feel wretched and disgusting. I need to make it up to Solal. . . V’alura downed the rest of her drink. What she needs is a clear head. A pity party does no one good. Like her momma used to tell her, ain’t no one want to go to someone else’s pity party because ain’t no one got time for that. V’alura shifted so that she sat upright atop her orange slice pool float, paused briefly to recover from a sudden but short dizzy spell and smiled at Luna, “Hey there. I don’t think we’ve met before. I’m V’alura Belmont, and when I’m not moping in a pool by myself I’m usually the chief science officer of this ship.”

V’alura Belmont

Luna smiled at first until she heard the words Chief science officer. Her eyes went wide and she tensed Her mind went back in time. The room wight walls. A voice two of them arguing. Luna shook her head forcing the memory away.

She blincked ” Hi im Ensin luna I’m on of the new Security officers, it’s a nice pool. How has your day been” She said?
