Lieutenant Kyle Anders made sure to take an extra coffee before heading in the general direction of Holodeck Two. After what seemed to be months of slow, plodding early morning patrols around the Arkangel, the young Yorkshireman was looking forward to the possibility of getting a little hand to hand combat under his belt. Not having had much chance to interact with the new XO since she first came on board, Kyle was also eager to discover what kind of combat experience the new First Officer had.

It was of course the duty of the Security Chief to do ‘background checks’ into each of the new officers coming on board the Arkangel, and Kyle found that he had read through the entirety of Sifeda Itri’s personnel file before realising. Growing up inside a Romulan prison camp must have been hard on someone who didn’t actually appear fully Romulan, though her career as a Starfleet officer was certainly nothing to be sniffed at either, serving as a Security officer with an exemplary record aboard the Toussaint. Arriving at Holodeck Two made Kyle more and more interested in his XO by the second.

-Lieutenant Kyle Anders: Chief of Security-

Sifeda took combat seriously, maybe a little too seriously, therefore she was already in holodeck 2 with her bat’leth polished, shiny, and sharpened. One of her most prized possessions, she always reveled at the opportunity to use it. When the Lieutenant walked in she grinned at him and said in Klingon, “wo’ toy’taHvISHegh ‘e’ tul Hoch tlhIngan? reHSuvruptlhInganSuvwI.” as she spun her bat’leth over her head.

Itri, XO

Kyle grinned and arched an eyebrow, “Of course I know you’re ready to serve the Empire, but are you ready to meet your match?”

-Lieutenant Kyle Anders: Chief of Security-

Sifeda’s bat’leth suddenly dropped to her side. She looked at the security officer for a moment and burst out laughing. This was uncharacteristic for her to do, as she was always more on the serious side. “Lieutenant, I must say, I have not met anyone who was able to get this amount of laughter out of me,” she said in between her laughter. “If you wanted a translation you should have just asked.”
As she composed herself she said, “I said, A warrior [Klingon] is always prepared to fight. Never leave home without your bat’leth.” She raised her bat’leth and said, “So are you prepared to fight? As you assume you are my match.”

Itri, XO

“Computer,” Kyle said with a grin, “Bat’leth!” When the holographic equivalent materialised at his side, Kyle stood with his legs at equidistant intervals and held the blade with both hands, in a similar fashion to the way a human in the 20th and 21st centurys would have held the steering wheel of an automobile, “Defend yourself!” he cried, before bolting forward to meet the XO.

-Lieutenant Kyle Anders: Chief of Security-

The first thing she noticed was how he was holding the bat’leth. It was all wrong and she knew he could not easily manage the weapon. When he bolted toward her she held up her bat’leth, one hand was palm down on the center grip and the other hand was palm up on the bottom grip leaving the top grip unoccupied and giving her more extension as well as total control of the blade. When her bat’leth clanged with his, a cascade of sparks flew from both blades, Sifeda used all her strength, pushed the blades away from her, stepped sideways, elbowed Anders in the face, and slipped past him, deflecting his attack. Then she whirled her blade expertly as she pursued the security officer aiming for his unprotected back.

Itri, XO

Anders reeled for a second in response to the elbow to the face, he was clearly getting sloppy. He knew that this slight advantage would give the XO the idea to go for his back, so he began to whirl the blade round behind him in order to bring the blade up in front of his back, weighting himself to the ground with his back leg. The weight of Sifeda’s blade was pushing at his back, he knew he was going to get a work out from this exercise.

-Lieutenant Kyle Anders: Chief of Security-

Sifeda retracted her bat’leth and said, “Reset!” She lowered her bat’leth and learning to never turn her back on an opponent, even in a mock battle, she stepped back a few steps as she faced him.
“Lieutenant, you no doubt have strength as an advantage over me.” Her arms were definitely going to be sore from clashing with and holding off Anders’ blade. “Your fighting style and combat maneuvers are superlative by Academy standards. However, I want to make sure you can stand up to a Klingon warrior if you ever have to. First, you need to know the proper way to hold your bat’leth so you can have more control over the maneuver of it.” She held up her bat’leth and said, you appear to be right-handed, so your left hand will go in the center slot, palm down,” she placed her hand there to show him, ‘and your right hand will into the lower slot, palm up. Try it and let me know if it works for you.”

Itri, XO

“I don’t doubt your observent nature as XO of this ship Commander,” Anders said, placing his right hand, palm down in the centre slot, “But I’m actually left handed, or cacky handed as some of my ancestors back home in England would prefer to put it.”

-Lieutenant Kyle Anders: Chief of Security-

“My mistake, Lieutenant. The same logic applies, just in reverse. Your right hand will go in the center slot, palm down and your left hand will into the lower slot.”

Itri, XO

Kyle mirrored the XO’s hand positions and took a few swipes at the air between long calming breaths, “Something like this?”

-Lieutenant Kyle Anders: Chief of Security-

“Perfect.” She said with a proud smile. “Now come at me and do not hold back.”

Itri, XO

“Defend yourself,” Kyle roared with pride as he whirled the Bat’leth round, using the momentum from his hand in the centre slot to push the blade down onto Itri; not hard enough to injure of course, but hopefully hard enough to give the XO something to think about.

-Lieutenant Kyle Anders: Chief of Security-

The force of the blade coming down on hers was too much and Sifeda fell backwards, her blade flying over her head and sliding across the floor. She had intended to push him back with her blade, but lost her footing position and was not able to withstand the attack.
She sat up and twisted from side to side trying to ease the pain in her lower back, the part that was most impacted by her fall. “Great attack, Lieutenant. See how the proper handling of the bat’leth can make all the difference?”

Itri, XO

Kyle dropped the blade to his side and extended his right arm, “I had one hell of a teacher.”

-Lieutenant Kyle Anders: Chief of Security-

Sifeda let out a friendly scoff and accepted his arm, using it to help her stand to her feet. “Well it is comforting to know that something besides a sore lower back will come from this.” She shook her head in embarrassment, it was foolish of me not to defend myself properly. I guess I am getting a bit rusty.” She smoothed her hair and said, “Would it be too much if I asked for a rematch, perhaps next week?”

Itri, XO

“How would you feel about a tag team match?” Kyle said, a glint forming in his eye.

-Lieutenant Kyle Anders: Chief of Security-

“I think whoever goes up against us won’t have a chance.”

Itri, XO

Kyle smiled, “You misunderstand Commander, I was suggesting a tag team match consisting of myself and a partner, taking on you and a partner of your choice.”

-Lieutenant Kyle Anders: Chief of Security-

She thought for a minute then said, “The only other partner I would consider would be a Klingon and I don’t recall any on the ship at this moment.”

Itri, XO

“I’m honoured that you’d consider me as your only none Klingon partner ma’am,” Kyle said politely.

-Lieutenant Kyle Anders: Chief of Security-

“A well-deserved status after knocking me on my behind.” She held her bat’leth in one hand while she placed her other hand on her lower back as she stretched the part she knew was going to be sore tomorrow. “I think we can conclude this match.”

Itri, XO
