The En was equipped with numbers. V’alura nodded her head to show she was listening while her brain worked in the background. Anyone who stressed over a less than five percent drop in productivity were either stressed the hell out or ready to snap and end up in sickbay to receive some forcefully medicated sleep. V’alura will have to tread carefully. “Rules and Regulation are wonderful guides.” V’alura said, agreeably. “What’s great about Starfleet regulations is that in certain areas there are grey areas. Though the manual outlines how an officer’s personal quarters should present, there is room still for decorations and creativity. So long as follow the guidelines.”

She spoke with casual kindness, as though they were having a comfortable chat about the subject. “Like in my quarters, I have two movie posters hanging on my walls. One is the poster for this movie called Legally Blonde. I love that movie. It changed my life when I first saw it as a teenager. The other is the poster for a movie I acted in. Last Summer At Crimson Lake. That movie changed the course of my acting career. So not the typical art that many officers elect but it falls within the guidelines of no more than three to four wall hangings for a senior officer’s quarters and each poster is within the size guidelines.”

She paused, then smiled at Demil “If you’d like we can go through the regulations and guidelines for personal quarters together. There’s many things that may not be ‘strictly regulation’ but are still acceptable.”

“Alright,” Demil said. “If that’s what you would like to happen.”
OOC: Sorry I’ve been fairly inactive and not very descriptive lately.

“This isn’t about what I want, Demil.” V’alura said, “This is about you. I’m going to be blunt now, but, I am worried about you. I’m worried that you removed the personal decorations in your room and I’m worried that you are obsessing over rules and regulations as a way to cope with the results of this last mission. Am I right to worry, Demil? Please be honest with me.” V’alura didn’t like pulling rank to get her way, or to get her subordinates to talk but she wasn’t sure she could separate V’alura the Person from Lieutenant Belmont in En Lis’ mind. And though she never made mention of her rank or role as Demil’s department head, she was aware that her request could be seen not as a honestly plea, but as the demand of a boss.

Demil tried to hold his composure, but emotionally exhausted as he was, he failed and broke down. “I failed,” he said through the tears beginning to stream down his face. “I broke regulation and the mission failed. We lost our chance for first contact and possibly killed a unique lifeform. And it’s my fault.” His entire body trembled, as he tried and failed to regain control.

V’alura hesitated for one moment. In that moment her half-vulcan mind whirled away . It weighed the cons against the pros. It theorized several different outcomes. The logic and the emotion of her next action were thought, tested and determined in the span of a moment. “Oh, Demil,” V’alura came up beside the distraught En. She wrapped him in a hug, careful that her hands touched only fabric and that her meager mental shields were in place. “What happened was not your fault. You are not responsible for the result of that mission.” She kept her voice low and soothing and braced herself. V’alura’s touch telepathy wasn’t especially developed and normally fabric is enough of a barrier to prevent accidental readings when the person was calm and not in emotional distress.

Demil slowly calmed some, but not fully. “But I was. The creature could have been beamed to the brig instead. Or we could have beamed Lt. Hobbes out of danger and tried to neutralize the neurotoxin. That was my responsibility, and I messed it up.” V’alura only caught snippets of his internal thoughts, but what she picked up portrayed the mental cascade failure of always having to be perfect, then completely failing (in his eyes at least).
