Ensign Baptiste pulled up the data on Starfleet probes as he was going to be working with Ensign Kaden Buchanan from engineering in modifying the probes to study the Forseth and the Nebula lifeforms. He did not want to appear totally ignorant on the various probes. He entered the engineering lab where he had agreed to meet Ensign Buchanan and looked around Wow, quel incroyablelaboratoire. Je pensais que les laboratoires médicaux avaient beaucoup de gadgets. he thought in French. I am unsure if I will be able to assist Ensign Buchanan in this endeavor. Just remember to mention using a Class Seven probe to study the Forseth, with added capabilities to study their language, and perhaps gather some of their bodily waste for DNA analysis. We will also need to use a Class Eight probe with a Class Four package to study the Organisms in and around the Nebula. At least that is what the PaDD and computer recommended when I put my parameters in. he thought as he looked for Ensign Kaden Buchanan.

=^= Itri to Baptiste and Buchanan. Is there a way to boost the probes so they can read sooner and from a greater distance?=^=

Itri, XO

Baptiste could tell such would be possible at the XO’s request, while they couldn’t likely get much more range, enhancing the sensitivity of the scans would be viable and easy enough to do.

“Kaden,” Katie called out having overheard the XO’s request. Once she was certain that the young engineer had heard her, she continued. “Remember that the plan is a passive probe. The instruments are to be receptors only; no transmissions other than the tight beam back to the ship; no sending out a signal and reading its return. Passive. Nothing active.”

Anang stepped into the conversation.

“There is a limit to how sensitive we can set passive receiving instruments. We will introduce errors if tune them too high,” he said. He frowned. “We could send the probe at a higher velocity. That would get the information back to us more quickly.”

“And if you were a member of a highly advanced species and you detected an object passing through your system at a speed higher than any natural object, what would you assume it was? And if it were ‘pinging’ away?” Katie said shaking her head. “If the idea is to gather information without revealing ourselves then a strictly passive probe traveling at speeds comparable to natural objects is the way to go.”

“And the XO?” Anang said.

“If command wants us to abandon the idea of avoiding detection, they can order us to change the probe. Until they give us the order, we adjust the instruments to the highest reasonable level of sensitivity and set the initial velocity to match something like a comet.”
