Demil walked into the lab, sadly noting the extent of the damage. He’d been placed on a brief leave after the successful contact with the Forseth, and hadn’t had the opportunity to return to see how badly things had been damaged. But here he was now, standing in the empty, silent lab. The engineers had done their usual stellar repair job, and there was nothing actually broken or nonfunctional left, but it was still too empty. Too many experiments, carefully controlled for weeks, now shattered and gone. The office just off the lab, sitting empty in the absence of a CSO. He sat at the console in the office and booted it up, inputting the command to retrieve as much damaged data as possible.

Ens. Lis, Science

As Ensign Lis began transferring data the door to the Lab hissed open and Ensign Buckingham stepped in.
Demil spun in the chair to face the newcomer. “Oh hello,” he stated, a note of surprise in his voice.
“Hello there” Thomas said warmly. “I’m Ensign Buckingham - the new Doctor on board. I heard that you have come down here to try and clean up a little, so I thought I swing by and see if I can be of any assistance?” Thomas looked around the room and took in the damage as he spoke.
“I may not be a Scientist as such, but I’m sure I can be of some use.”

Demil nodded. “I’m Ensign Lis. Good to meet you, doctor. I could use some help, come to think of it.” He pointed to a workstation adjacent to the office. “Could you go start pulling up the data on experiments running at the time of the fire and find out what the last saved data on those was, as well as if any of that most recent data was damaged?”
Ens. Lis, Science

“Certainly! I’d be happy too!” Buckingham took a seat at the Workstation and began tapping away at the interface. Despite having been nervous at first, Thomas was pretty keen to start helping out aboard the his new posting.
As he began looking at the various experiment’s data that had been running at the time of the fire he noticed just how much work had gone into these projects. ‘I really hope nothing has been lost’ he thought to himself.
“So Lis” Thomas said as he tapped away. “How long have you been aboard the Ark Angel?”

“Around a year,” Demil said, typing on his own console. “It was my first assignment out of the academy, and I’ve been on board since. Have you been assigned on any other ships, doctor?”

Ensign Lis, Science

“After I graduated the Academy the CO ask if I’d like to stay on as the Chief Medical Officer - an offer I was only too glad to accept. But this is my first assignment in the main fleet.” Buckingham explained.
“How have you found your first year aboard?” Thomas asked. “I hope you found the transition out of the academy to be a smooth one?”

“Relatively,” Demil said, thinking back to his first days on the Ark Angel. “I came on board right as a new CSO was taking command of the department, so a lot was shifting around. She left the ship due to personal reasons near the start of our past mission. Right now I’m serving as the officer in charge of the genetics department - that’s a relatively recent development after some lieutenants left the ship.”

Ens. Lis, Science

“Oh Genetics!” Buckingham said excitedly - his interest piqued. “How has that been going? Any interesting developments or experiments?” He asked. He looked down at the console he was working on and remembered suddenly what had happened.
“We’ve been researching some interesting scenarios in Vulcan-Andorian hybrid genetics,” Demil noted. “The interactions in the makeup of their blood and environmental resistances are particularly interesting. Some of the simulated individuals with genetic codes we’ve hybridized are highly resistant to a wide range of environments, while most have a typical range similar to a human’s.”
“Oh I hope nothing important has been lost in here” there was a subtly hint of worry in his voice. Thomas knew how much work went into experiments and the like from his days teaching and he knew the upset that would most likely be felt if they were to be lost.

“Most of it ought to have been backed up and saved on the main computer,” Demil said, “Most of what’s likely lost is data from physical experiments that were destroyed or data that was currently being evaluated in a separate sub-system, such as the majority of the active cybernetics experiments.”
Ens. Demil Lis, Science

“Well from what I’m seeing here…” Buckingham said as he continued tapping away at the console. “I would concur with you. Everything seems to be backed up with any data loss being negligible… which is a relief!”

Demil smiled. “It is indeed.” His fingers flew across the console, inputting a stream of commands and bringing the lab to life. “There we go! The lab is up and running again,” he stated happily, standing up from his chair. “We’ll have to restart some experiments, but we lost almost nothing major.” His posture relaxed from the rigid stance typical of the Demil who had first boarded the Ark Angel, he walked over and stood behind Thomas’s chair. “It’ll be nice to be almost back to normal.”

Ens. Demil Lis, Science

“Ah! Well Done” Buckingham smiled as the lights in the room rose and some of the equipment began to re-power itself.
Thomas got up from his chair and stood next to Ensign Lis.
“Well, thank goodness things aren’t as bad as they first appeared! It’s been nice to work with you, Demil. I certainly look forward to working together more in the future! This has been a most rewarding experience. It’s one thing to join the crew of a Starship, but it is another to start to help out and to feel useful. So I thank you for the opportunity to assist you, I really appreciate it!”
