Erin’s body fell face up on the bed. She giggled. Looking at the dull ceiling of her quarters, she could not believe her eyes. She had made it! If two years prior someone had told her that, after leaving school she would be serving on board a starship as a Starfleet officer, she would never have believed them. Worse! She would have outright denied that she would even ever want to do that. Her place, she had known all along, was with the Federation Science Council.

Not anymore… she thought as a smile crossed her face. Sitting up, she rummaged through her bag looking for the PaDD that contained her orders. She was supposed to report in with her department head, Lt. Persephone Milestone, with Sickbay for her Medical, and with the Counselor for her Psychological Evaluation. A pang of nervousness hit her. She shook it off. If Molly had managed to do it, so could she.

Switching to her new uniform, Erin took a few moments to look at herself in the mirror. It was weird… but also exciting. For a moment, she rolled her hair up and held it in a ballerina bun, just like she had watched her sister do many times. Smiling, she shook her head and dropped it back into a ponytail.

Leaving her quarters, she made her way to Deck 6, and to the Chief Science Officer’s office, peeking into the labs as she went. Finally, standing in front of the door, Erin took a deep breath and pressed the chime.

Seph looked up and smiled. “You must be my new science officer. Come on in and have a seat.” She motioned to the chair opposite her desk. The room had a huge glass opening into the science area and a doorway that had no door. The containment room had been transformed into an office at some point and stayed that way. On the wall a huge board was covered in plasheets and diagrams of various star systems and the paths of ships thru them. It looked like a child’s map of how to get from point A to point B in a horrible ‘connect the dots’ kind of way.

Erin’s gaze tried to land on everything at once. As she walked, her mouth was slightly open as she took in every bit of the office with awe. Finally, her eyes met those of her superior officer and she realized she had not uttered a word. Panic washed over her as her cheeks flushed red.

“Uh, yes Ma’am. Thank you.” She managed to say as walked to the chair and sat down. Erin didn’t even notice that she had not said her name.

There were containers and samples all over as if the office, itself, was a timeline of every scientific study, question or sample that had passed thru the ship in its time in space. Most had been there when Seph arrived, but a few, mostly those littering her desk, were from her own time there. “So… science minded, and driven. I like that… but tell me what I won’t find in your file.” She leaned back in her chair, stylus weaving absently between her fingers, as she looked at the woman before her.

Her eyes darted between the samples on the desk and the CSO’s face. Erin didn’t want to be rude but she also wanted to see… everything. And then the question came. It took a moment for Hazen’s distracted brain to catch up but finally she managed to process what she was being asked to say.

Gavin The name was the first thing on Hazen’s mind. Milestone would certainly not find that on her file, but she was sure that offering the details of her romantic life first thing after walking in was not going to give her any brownie points.

Clearing her throat, she realized it had been a while since the woman had spoken and that she had been waiting for her to produce any sort sound all this time. “Uh… I have a fondness for Botany and I make small terrariums on my free time.” Erin wanted to smash her head on the desk. Why? Why did she say that? She had made it all the way here, wasn’t she supposed to sound smarter than this?

“I’m sorry… I’m a little nervous.” She gave Milestone a shy smile. “I never intended to be a Starfleet officer, but here I am after changing my mind at the last minute, and I am absolutely not prepared for this…” Suddenly, Hazen’s expression lit up as if some sort of realization had just dawned on her. “Hey, this is not on my file!” She said out loud. She smiled broadly. “I guess I was always the scientific mind of the family. As a child I was really curious about the world and everything in it… Earth was my playground and I wanted to know about everything around me. I never really cared much about outer space or anything besides my home planet… As such, my life plan was to eventually find a position with the Federation Science Council. Somewhere on Earth. I’m not picky. But two years ago I applied for an internship with the Science in Space program and was assigned to the USS Dresden. For the first time I saw how limited my viewpoint was… so… I wanted to explore what was out there. And here I am.”
