“Whose that for?”

Jazzin glanced up as Kella stepped beside him, peering down at his hand. “It’s an Opallan.” He said, lifting it to show her.

It was a round piece of what looked like stone, smooth and about the same size as a man’s palm. What made it unusual is that it shimmered in fading colours, each fading into the last. “Pretty,” Kella said. “Whose the lucky guy?”

Jazzin flushed and chuckled all at once. He had established himself pretty well with the nursing staff, he thought. They never addressed him by rank, and unless the Chief Medical Officer was about, they usually called him Jazz. “It’s not a romantic gift. It’s a thank you gift.” He slipped it into his shoulder bag, containing his PaDDs and other various items. “It’s time I was off. Anything you need from me before I go?”

Kella laughed, not unkindly. “I think I’ll manage, Jazz. Go be giving. Go on … out of my Sickbay!”

“Yes ma’am!” He said, to the crewman nurse, smiling.

Reaching the office of the Chief Science Officer, Jazz pressed the door chime and waited. He wondered if this was a bit much, but he had been brought up by kindly, gentle-hearted parents, and giving gifts as ‘thank yous’ was something they did regularly. Plus, it wasn’t a romantic gift, as he had stated to Kella. He suddenly had the fear that Human - who did not possess the empathic abilities Betazoids did and so could not immediately know the intentions of others - might think it was a romantic gift!

That would be awkward.

Persephone was in her office working on her hobby since the shift change over was done and she had some free time. The chime made her call out absently, “Come in…”

She was standing up facing the wall where a large chat showed a section of space with all the charted planets, moons, steroid fields, and any other notable sized body of rock. There was a weird winding path marked out that looked like a child’s miserably failed attempt at connect-the-dots.

Seph’s left side was towards the door and she had three padds in her hands that she was constantly referencing.

Jazzin stepped through the door and immediately came to attention; he was fresh out of Starfleet training, so some things were ingrained within him. His eyes, however, travelled from her to the chart, and it piqued his curiosity. But he wasn’t about to to begin their dialogue by questioning her on something she might not be willing to talk about.

Instead, he said: “Good afternoon, Lieutenant. Excuse the interruption, but I wanted to … well,” he cleared his throat. “I have brought you a gift.” He suddenly felt a bit foolish, like he was ‘sucking up’ (as the Humans would say) to a superior officer. “To say ‘thank you’ for your assistance in Sickbay. Your presence was … comforting, during my first real on-ship emergency. The entire thing was a little … messy. So I brought you this …” He pulled the stone from his pocket and held it out. The grey stone shimmered slowly from one colour to the next, sometimes a light yellow sparkle, and other times a deep, magenta glow. “It’s an Opallan, ma’am. Betazoid adolescents use it to focus on when they experience too much of other people’s thoughts and emotions. I know you’re not a telepathic species, but … well, I have always liked it. It’s …pretty,” he gave a nervous chuckle. “Now I feel a bit foolish! I didn’t mean to imply you were … I mean … I just like it, and wanted to say thank you with something.”

Jazzin pretty much held his breath. He hoped he wasn’t going to offend Persephone by giving her what was, in effect, a children’s toy.
