Jazzin stepped through the door and immediately came to attention; he was fresh out of Starfleet training, so some things were ingrained within him. His eyes, however, travelled from her to the chart, and it piqued his curiosity. But he wasn’t about to to begin their dialogue by questioning her on something she might not be willing to talk about.

Instead, he said: “Good afternoon, Lieutenant. Excuse the interruption, but I wanted to … well,” he cleared his throat. “I have brought you a gift.” He suddenly felt a bit foolish, like he was ‘sucking up’ (as the Humans would say) to a superior officer. “To say ‘thank you’ for your assistance in Sickbay. Your presence was … comforting, during my first real on-ship emergency. The entire thing was a little … messy. So I brought you this …” He pulled the stone from his pocket and held it out. The grey stone shimmered slowly from one colour to the next, sometimes a light yellow sparkle, and other times a deep, magenta glow. “It’s an Opallan, ma’am. Betazoid adolescents use it to focus on when they experience too much of other people’s thoughts and emotions. I know you’re not a telepathic species, but … well, I have always liked it. It’s …pretty,” he gave a nervous chuckle. “Now I feel a bit foolish! I didn’t mean to imply you were … I mean … I just like it, and wanted to say thank you with something.”

Jazzin pretty much held his breath. He hoped he wasn’t going to offend Persephone by giving her what was, in effect, a children’s toy.

She blushed. Persephone, the hard and science fact based woman actually blushed. Biting her lip as she stepped towards Lauren then smiled. “I am flattered, Jazzin. I mean, I didn’t do anything special that anyone else wouldn’t have done.” She took the stone as he offered it. She had heard of the Opallans but never actually seen one.

Looking up, she motioned to one of the seats on the other side of her desk. She perched on the edge near the chairs. “I had heard of these, but never seen one. Are you sure you won’t need it? If it’s something that helps with overwhelming emotional and mental overload, on this ship, you may have a need for it?” She was concerned he was possibly giving away something he cherished, merely to thank her.

The Betazoid took the seat with a ‘thank you’, and smiled at her blush. Everything he had seen of her so far suggested a really nice person. “No, I wish you to have it. I have one that my mother gave to me when I started to manifest my abilities, and have used that one ever since. This one,” he motioned to the one in her hand. “Was a gift given my a friend from the Academy for helping him during a difficult time. You were a very calming presence during the situation in Sickbay, ma’am,” he said. “It’s reassuring to feel that kind of … well … feeling, when the event is so stressful, so I wanted to give it as a thanks for doing me the same kindness I hope I did him.”

His eyes looked to the charts on the wall. “That looks extremely complicated!” He said, smiling. “I admire scientists and the way they think. I hope I wasn’t interrupting anything?”

Persephone smiled. “Well if you ever need a call head around, then, feel free to send for me. I’ll either calm everyone down or knock them out. How’s that?” She winked to reassure him she was teasing.

Jazzin laughed at that. “I’ll certainly keep you in mind, ma’am!”

When he glanced at the board, she smiled. “No you weren’t interrupting. As for complicated” she laughed, “yeah, I guess it kinda is. You remember basic science where they taught you about using a planet, or moon’s, gravity to ‘slingshot’ a ship it into space? Well this is the same premise. We use the slingshot method to give ships a huge boost that saves energy as well. In ancient times when ships went great distances they could only go as far as their fuel could carry them and still get home safely. Well this is a similar idea. When a ship is crippled and without warp capability, it could take forever to travel a great distance.”

Jazzin was no scientist, but he had heard of the ‘slingshot’ system. It was called something entirely different on Betazed, but it seemed most species who had become warp capable (or even those that were on their way to being so) had or were using something similar.

She stood up to use her finger to track a pattern back and forth across the star chart between planets. “I’m hoping I can map a way to use planets to basically ‘whip’ a ship across an expanse either to get to a station, a planet that can assist, or even just out of places that after ship systems adversely.”

She glanced back at her company as laughed. “Sorry… It’s a bit of a passion for me. Don’t worry about it though. I didn’t mean to turn it into a lecture.”

Jazz shook his head. “Not at all, ma’am! It’s fascinating. Though I imagine a huge task, to be taken alone! Would you be looking at a series of maps depend on locations? That surely has to be worth some investment beyond your own personal venture?” His black eyes looked at the different paths already in place. “I mean; you could essentially ensure that o ship was ever truly stranded if it had it’s warp core taken out. That has to be something the Federation should invest in?”

Seph smiled, she couldn’t help it. Some supported her hobby but mostly they just told their eyes. Surely if it was possible, Star Fleet would have figured it out by now… Right?

But here was Lauren, fill on supporting her with hardly any knowledge of her or the task she had given herself. “Yes, I’m looking at particular maps in certain regions. I’m using the high conflict points closest to the Neutral Zones first. Those are the places most likely for a situation to occur that would warrant the need for such a help. But if The Federation has any desire to join in, they haven’t said.” She laughed slightly. “Though to be fair, I only barely outlined my theory with just enough detail to gain me access to the star charts I desire. So perhaps that’s why no one’s inquired about it.”
