The bridge operations station terminal beeped as the helm detected a warp signature on an intercept course. Sensors on the tactical and science station registered a Starfleet warp signature. Tactical sensors further showed that the vessel’s shields were raised.

The Asimov’s Navigator, Lieutenant Gavin Cooper, raised an eyebrow as he glanced at the Tactical readout on the Command Chair. Only his third Watch Officer shift since coming on board, the Officer was still getting use to the way things ran but was settling in well.

He gazed over for just a second at the redhead on Science One, currently in her first shift as Science Duty Officer. He smiled at Hazen as her eyes turned to his. Cooper knew well that the next words out of his mouth would likely scare the girl to death but he had a job to do.

“Red Alert…” Cooper said flatly, causing the Bridge Crew to snap out of their daze and scramble to their posts. “… raise Shields, charge phasers and spin up tubes One through Four.”

Tapping the Comm Button on the Chair, he spoke calmly.

=A= Watch Officer Cooper to the Captain. Ma’am, we have a Federation starship… Starfleet IFF in bound to our location at high speed and shields up. I believe they may have someone in pursuit. Requesting your presence on the Bridge.=A=

Jazzin was just heading to his next patient as the lights flashed red and the siren rang out ‘Red Alert’. It was a sound he had heard before, but always in training … now it was real; his first Red Alert situation aboard the ship. He felt his heartbeat quicken.

The staff knew their jobs, and everyone began moving at once. He did too; he had to. “Clear every biobed of anyone that isn’t critical,” he said, as one of the nurses fell in line with him. “Kella?” He enquired, as they walked.

“Lieutenant Valel is having chest pains; he was your next patient.” She handed him the PaDD with the scan results she had taken on admission.

His eyes flicked over them. “I can’t see anything on here that would really concern me.” He said, after a moment. They reached the bed where the man was sat. “Lieutenant,” Jazzin said, as they approached. “I’m going to put a monitor on you and then you can go.” He said, nodding to Kella to grab the equipment.

This did not seem to please Valel. “A monitor?! I should be examined! I’m having pains in my chest!”

“Thank you,” Jazzin said to Kella, as she handed him the small device. He reached over and, thankfully, Valel allowed him to place the monitor. It blinked as it activated. “Your scans are coming back fine; I agree that we should investigate further, but we’re at Red Alert and very well may need this bed. If anything happens, the device will alert us, but I don’t see any reason why you can’t return to you station during an emergency.”

“But …”

“Thank you, Lieutenant,” Jazzin said, quickly, and moved away.

Kella trotted to his side. “Look at you!” She said, with some surprise in her voice. “Growing up fast! Valel will probably complain … he’s that kind of man, I’m afraid.”

The Betazoid took a breath. “Let’s hope Lieutenant Vock sees it my way, then!” He closed the man’s file, and scanned his section of Sickbay. Everything seemed to be in order. “Where is the Chief, anyway?” He said, as casually he could.

In truth, Lauren would feel better knowing that the much more experienced Vulcan doctor would be around if things got too hectic.

The doors to the Sickbay slid open and Vock appeared as if on cue. As he stepped in, Lieutenant Valel saw him and made a bee line straight for the CMO. “I have a complaint! I need to be seen and this… this… Ensign simply slapped a monitor on my chest and sent me on my way! I am having chest pains! I need medical attention.!” Vock’s only reactions were to cock an eyebrow at the man and then lean slightly to look at the ‘Ensign’ in question. Leaning back and looking at Valel, Vock noted the monitor and it’s readings. He then pulled a medical tricorder from a carrier on his hip and moved it up and down in front of the man. “The monitor is functioning properly, your heart beat is stable, and there are no signs of respiratory distress. I am quite sure that Doctor Lauren is correct in his use of the monitor. Tricorder readings would indicate stress-induced angina. Report to your section, Lieutenant. We are under alert, after all.” and he moved the man outside and let the doors slide closed.

Lauren watched the ecxhange from behind a PaDD, and happily, it concealed his smile.

Looking around, he said loudly but flatly “Trauma kits on standby in all ICU stations. Medical Response Teams be prepped and ready for deployment in two minutes. Ensure replicators are ready and back up power is on line. Stations please, everyone. Prepare for wounded.” He then made his way to Lauren. As he passed Kella, he handed her his tricorder. “Please charge this, Nurse. The power cell died last evening.” and he stepped past her, ignoring her confused “But sir, you just scanned…” and walking up to Lauren. “Report, Doctor. Are all preparations underway?” Vock knew the answer, Lauren had done exactly what was needed, but the question was always appropriate.

Vock, CMO

Kella took the PaDD with a narrowed gaze behind Vock’s back, but she did as she was bid … a typical nurse’s reaction to a doctor’s orders.

Lauren stepped forward, ignoring Kella’s pointed glare. “All biobeds have been cleared of non-critical patients, sir.” He said, relieved that the senior officer was here. “Each one has two nurses assigned and as far as I am aware, all medics have responded to the alert status.” He said, formally, then added. “I’m a little nervous, here, sir.” He admitted.

Whether or not Vock had intended it, Lauren now looked to the Vulcan as a mentor, and he instinctively said what he was thinking. Maybe the Vulcan had took on more than he had realised!
