Seph startled slightly as Vock spoke. She hadn’t been paying attention, another sign the headache was in full bloom. “I ummm… I came to get replicator permission for the headache remedy in my records. Nothing serious. Then I’ll get out of your hair.” She clenched her jaw as the shift in her eyes to glance around the room made her head thrum.

While she wasn’t aware of them, little micro tells would give away her pain more than her words. The tightness on the edges of her eyes and the occasional clench of her jaw… the twitch of her hands and the uneasiness of her stance. “The Doc used to just authorize a couple doses and that was it. I can add them to the tea in my quarters.”

Vock looked at her in silence for a moment. Gesturing, he said “Please have a seat on biobed three, Lieutenant. I will, of course, need to conduct an examination before prescribing any medications or treatments. I will be as fast as I can.” and his hand reached into the pocket of the white coat he wore over his blue uniform. Retrieving a medical tricorder, he moved to stand next to the bed. “Computer, lower lights bio bed three to fifty percent.” and there was chirp followed by a lowering of the lights.

Vock, CMO

Seph bit back a huff. “Very well. But it’s unnecessary. The records have documented it thoroughly.” She say on the indicated bed and put her hands in her lap, unaware she was fiddling in nervousness.

Reasons would show moderate level of anxiety, slightly below normal nutrition levels, and a mildly raised pulse. She was overworked and not taking very good care of herself. “If you’d just authorize it, I’ll go to my room and have my tea and leave you in peace.”

His nearness was almost unnerving. She suddenly remembered finding him unconscious on the shuttle bay floor and feeling a protective need that had nothing to do with anything rational in her mind. As he closed the gap to scan her, she actually turned her head to look away as if it would make it better… Which it didn’t. There was something about him that she was drawn to. And her scientific mind was utterly confused at the lack of rational reasoning behind it.

She bit her lip and remained silent.

Vock watched the scans closely and noted the turning of her head, but said nothing. “Lieutenant, I find no reason to prescribe anything more than a mild sleep-aid. And to suggest that you eat a full meal before going to sleep. You are slightly vitamin deficient and slightly dehydrated, which could be a cause of your headache. This is nothing severe. You just need to be more mindful of your body’s needs for rest and proper nutrition.” and he made a few notes in the PaDD and then moved to the medical replicator near the bed. “Diphenhydramine. 30 tablets, 10 milligrams per.” and a bottle with small pink pills appeared. “Take one an hour or two before bed on a full stomach with 12 ounces of water.” and he handed them to her. “They are an antihistamine. Also good for treating allergies.” he added as an additional fact.

“Is there anything else I can do to assist you, Lieutenant?”

Vock, CMO

She pulled her jaw up when she realized she had almost gaped at him at his suggestion. “No, I’m fine.” She took the offered bottle and nodded. “I’ll do my best,” she responded to his reminder to eat, and drink more water. Moving to hop off the bed, she hopped down a bit too swiftly and her hip bumped his. “Sorry…” she stepped sideways and shook her head. She put a smile on her face, but it would be obvious if he looked that it was for his benefit. “Guess I’m more tired than I thought.”

Vock’s head turned slightly to the side and he reached out and took Seph by the elbow to steady her. “No apologies needed, Lieutenant. It is obvious you are fatigued.” Once he was satisfied she was stable, he asked “When was the last time you had a full meal and full night’s rest?”

Vock, CMO

There was an almost imperceptable shrug, “I ate dinner. Had a bowl of cereal. Easier on the stomach than full meal before bed.” As she spoke it, she realized how ridiculous she sounded. But she couldn’t stop the confession once it began. “I don’t know about sleep. I nap every night before shift. I know that much. Sometimes I fall asl… nap after work if I’m tired.” She didn’t catch the slip that she often just fell asleep because she was always tired.

Smiling to shake it off, she shrugged once more. “It’s part of being a Supervisor. Always stuff to do, right?” Her jaw was clenching as she tried to make light of not taking care of herself. It wasn’t that bad, after all. A bit more food and longer naps… check… she got it.

Vocked looked at her and said “That would be an erroneous corollary, Lieutenant. Yes, being assigned in a supervisory capacity is a great deal of work; but that does not dictate that one should not take care of one’s self.” and he paused as he looked at the scans again. “Before I release you, Lieutenant, please come and speak with me privately.” and he gestured toward his office door.

Vock, CMO

Seph couldn’t argue. Had it been another supervisor coming to her, she’d be just as skeptical. The Science Chief was about to agree when Vock gestured to his office.

“Yes, sir,” was the automatic response as she walked ahead of him into the small office off the main bay. Without being asked, she settled into the chair on the front side of the desk. She found herself speaking up, suddenly, as he followed her in. “So, have you recovered from your ordeal in the shuttle? I know it was a bit ago. But you did then turn around and plunge heading into work.”

Engineering was still working on what malfunction had caused the shuttle occupants to suffer as they had. After Seph’s reaction to seeing Vock on the floor, she had steered clear of the vessel and the investigation. If engineering needed her, surely they’d just ask.

Seph

“Indeed. Thank you for your concern.” he said. “At this moment, however, my concern is you Lieutenant. Tell me. How long have you had trouble sleeping? And do you have any idea what may be the cause of the issue? There is nothing in your scans to indicate a purely medical issue.”

Vock, CMO

She looked at him for a rather long minute before giving a surrender sigh. “Nightmares… That’s all. Just an over active imagination.” Once more trying to cover it up with a smile and shrug. Seph shifted slightly in her seat. She had so much time this way she wasn’t sure how long it had been. “A few weeks, that’s all.”

A simple task of his console would reveal the ‘remedy’ had been given out of and on for a few months. “It’s no big deal. I’ll be exhausted in a few days and catch up on the last sleep. No problem.” She once more fidgeted in her seat and shrugged like they were discussing a dinner menu.
