Walking like he had been summoned with some great urgency, James made his way towards the XO’s office. Making one final turn before he entered, he reminded himself This man is two ranks my superior. I have to muster up some respect. He made his final footsteps and came to the door. Without a moment’s pause, he rang the chime, caring not what business he interrupted.

The door slid open almost immediately, and from inside the room and behind the desk, a man wearing the red of Command and Commander pips didn’t look up from the PaDD he was working on. “Come in and report” came from the Executive Officer as a hand reached out, a very slight tremor evident for just a moment as he grasped a large cup of coffee and brought it back for a sip, all without looking at whoever was in the doorway. The man was dark haired and was obviously tall and well built. He was a man who gave the appearance of disliking paperwork all in all, who preferred to keep busy.

Cmdr Black, XO

“Lieutenant James Stark, I’m your new CMO. Sir.” The Sir. was very much tacked on at the last second. “I’ve had a chance to look at the medical facilities. Should prove more than adequate. If the staff is like the ship, we’ll be in alright shape.” His eyes were an icey blue that said nothing of what he thought. It was something he had picked up young. And now, as a doctor, bedside manner was not his strength, but patients always seemed reassured by his confidence. He figured the XO would do the same.

“Welcome to the Asimov Lieutenant” the XO replied, still without looking up as he read what was on the PaDD. “I’m glad the facilities are adequate. If they weren’t, that would just be too bad, that’s what you have to work with.” His tone wasn’t condescending, hurt or even offended. It was a tone that stated matter of factly that this was how it was and that the new Doctors opinion in the matter, didn’t actually matter. Still without looking at him, the coffee cup motioned to the chair. “Take a seat Doctor. Tell me, what is your combat triage like? Have you seen service outside a sickbay?”

Cmdr Black, XO

James sat across from the XO, starting to lose patience for this inability to look up. “I’ve served on two other ships. One was a hospital ship. The other was a heavy cruiser. Sovereign class. Like the Enterprise. We saw our fair share of action. You know, at a certain point, it becomes impossible to completely remove some Borg implants? Yeah. I’ve done my job.” Now he stared down the XO. If he doesn’t look up soon… James thought.

After a few moments of silence, Mason did look up, briefly. Just a glance, and then looked down again. “I’ve read the reports Lieutenant, they seem to be nasty pieces of tech that our best medical minds can’t understand or get a handle on yet, I’m not surprised that you couldn’t remove them either.” Then he placed the PaDD down and sat up straight, now looking at Stark fully for the first time. The man’s eyes were a piercing green, not unnatural, but of a striking quality. “The Asimov is a small ship, Lieutenant Stark, not a Soverign, Mythology or even a Manhattan. I expect you’ll find many things less than what you are used to with the facilities available on those other two classes, but for that fact the responsibility for the medical care and well being of this crew falls to you, and through you, me. I admire a man that can get things done and is focused, that doesn’t consider the Asimov a step down from those other two ships because his job, his duty, hasn’t changed one bit. Would you like a drink?” Mason asked the man, noticing that by now his own coffee cup was empty and placing it to one side.”

Cmdr Black, XO

I could use a stiff drink right now. “Coffee, please. Commander. Long shuttle ride here.” He paused. “I understand entirely what this assignment is. This is a tiny boat that gets into a lot of trouble situations. I can work with that. Equipment can be dealt with. Staff need to be top shelf. This ship’ll be ready for anything. From a plague of an unknown disease to triage to surgeries.”

“That’s good Lieutenant. Just coffee? Neither of us are officially on Duty, I’m going for a whiskey myself. Care to change your mind?” At that he swivelled in his chair and walked to a nearby cabinet, taking a bottle of an expensive looking scotch from behind one door and looking at the label slightly. Lagavulin 16 year single malt, one of the XO’s own favourites.

Cmdr Black, XO

The XO was finally speaking James’ language. “Well, if I’m off duty, I suppose I’ll join.” When he saw the label on the bottle he remarked “You have good taste Commander.” As he watched the glass fill, he couldn’t help but think of his father. “A taste for scotch is the only thing on which my father and I agree.” He chuckled. And the only way he’ll deal with me is with a scotch in his hand. He kept the last part a thought, hiding the origins of his demeanour.
