SNIP

The captain’s sudden collapse surprised Finn, but he managed to catch him, He and another of the crew carried him to the raft, the other crewmember volunteering to return with the captain and the come back with the raft. Finn handed the diamond to the ensign wrapped in a piece of cloth and told him to return it to Lieutenant Si’Rek.

“A moment, Ensign. The first away team reported that the restaurant was based on 20th century Earth. Logic dictates that they would be using local currency to sell their food. Ensign Finn, Earth’s culture in the 20th century was still a currency based society. The away team did report signs of local currency, did they not?” asked Jevek.

Finn watched the raft off and then returned to the remaining crew. What is this wretched place? he wondered, but shook himself before he could go further down that line. “I think we should minimize our time here,” he recommended. “I can continue on to the magic shop once we reach the marketplace, and meet you back there.”

Finn, Eng

“I shall join Ensign Finn,” said Jevek, “But we should secure funds first.”

“Feel free. Spare me… well, if you’ve replicated any small sapphires that are obviously sapphires, I think about twenty should suffice for my purposes,” Commander Idari said, looking for a coin purse in his satchel. “If nothing else, I might be able to get a sample of the herb that they also use as currency in exchange for whatever excess of cost I might incur.”

“Take Ensign Sam (NE) and Lt. Grant with you, Commander. If we are due to split up, we should not travel alone at least.”

Commander Jevek, 2O

“An understandable precaution,” Solit replied. “Come along Lieutenant, Ensign. Let us see what we can purchase here.”

With that, Commander Idari and the other two went to the marketplace proper, splitting off from the others who were headed beyond that main bazaar.

The marketplace was busy, and there was quite a commotion of trading of goods but it seemed like the primary exchange of goods was food, but there were various shops aligned the marketplace. Picture signs indicated what kind of shop they were. A hammer and anvil. A sword and shield. A picture of a mug with foam coming out of it. A saw cutting into wood. A clear glass chalice. Ensign Sam looked around. “Look, Commander, in the far eastern corner… does that look like a ring and bracelet on that shop sign to you?”

“Indeed. I don’t seem to see any pictographs representing written texts of any sort, and thus, as Commander Jevek indicated, obtaining the local currency may be a better use of our time here,” Solit responded.

“Probably because the literacy rate is low,” replied the Ensign.

He walked toward what he assumed was a jeweler’s shop. If he could pass himself off as some sort of gem trader, he may very well be able to gain something that would be easier to exchange for the specific documents he was hoping to find.

“I am quite capable of discussing various crafts, given my father’s upbringing, but I never did quite manage a haggle as well as my grandfather,” Commander Idari sheepishly admitted. “I always felt that, whenever I did negotiate with a Ferengi, we both knew that he was getting the better end of any deal - which is why I find Mister Zank so confusing. He’s a little too forthright, and a poor negotiator from my point of view, but somehow, he could afford his own ship and was able to keep a spouse in comfort. I wish I knew his secret - but I suppose I have another century of my life left to see if I can learn it.”

“Maybe he’s honest upfront and a stab them in the back type of person?” suggested the Ensign.

As they got to the entrance to what was likely a jeweler, Solit looked for any signage indicating restrictions.

“Most bazaars tend to be walk-in establishments, but it does do to check if an appointment is required at specialty locations. Not that I can read the local text, but such signage has a certain style that one can recognize.”

(Commander Idari, CSO)

“Well, given we’ve been here long enough, it seems the universal translators are working well,” whispered the Ensign.

The shopkeeper greeted the two as they entered the shop. “Welcome to Gald’s Fine Jewelry and Accessories! How can I help you?”
