It had been an interesting several days and it was only now that the Asimov was back in what they considered normal space that the new First Officer was able to report for duty. Knowing that this might not leave the best first impression, Siadra looked down at her daughter; concern written all over her pale features. Liara had never been this clingy, but since they had boarded the transport vessel that had brought them here, her daughter had refused to leave her side. And even when Siadra had told her to stay on the Novak, she child had managed to sneak into the runabout; to scared to stay behind. With Si’Rek on the ship as well, she knew that she could have left Liara with him as long as he was available. But in the end she had decided to take her along, hoping that her new Captain would understand.

A few minutes later the pair arrived in front of the Captain’s ready room. After running her free hand over her hair, pulled back in a French braid, and her uniform jacket, Siadra pressed the chime and waited to be called inside.

Sara was shaken from the trance of unending PaDDs on her desk by her door chime. She straightened a few things and called “Come in!” An odd feeling, to be on the other side of the captain’s desk, calling people in.

As the door opened in front of them, Siadra gave her daughter an encouraging smile and then led her into the ready room.

“Commander!” and child… “Welcome aboard the Asimov.” She smiled at Liara “and who have you brought with you?”

-Captain Sara Kiernan, CO

“Thank you Captain,” Siadra replied with a warm smile. “Nice to meet you. It’s good to be here.” When the Captain had addressed her, Liara had moved partly behind her mother so that it was mostly her wild mane of dark brown curls that was visible. Looking briefly down at her with a flicker of concern in her black eyes, Siadra continued, “And this unusually shy one is my daughter Liara. I’m sorry that I brought her along to our first proper meeting without asking if it is okay. If it is a problem I’ll call Lieutenant Si’Rek and ask him to look after her while we talk.”

~Cmdr. Enai, XO & Liara

“It’s no problem commander. Have a seat” she gestured broadly to the ready room as if to say wherever you like “Before we get started, would you or Liara like something from the replicator?” Sara went over and got a coffee for herself. She hoped it might make both the XO and her daughter more comfortable.

“Thank you Captain. A cup of coffee would be nice,” she replied before trying to catch Liara’s eyes as she asked, “And some apple juice for you?” Still holding on to her mother, Liara peered up at the Captain and nodded as she said softly, “Yes, please.”

“So, Commander.” Sara shuffled some PaDDs on her desk to find the right one. “Forgive the mess. I’ve reviewed the facts of your record, and I’m suitably impressed, but why don’t you tell me a little bit about yourself?”

-Captain Sara Kiernan, CO

“No need to apologise,” Siadra replied with a warm smile as she sat down on the couch with her daughter nestling close to her. “I was born and spend most of my childhood and adolescence on Trill where both my parents work for the university in Mak’ala. For as long as I can remember I’ve always been fascinated by Starfleet and seeing new worlds, meeting people from places and species I may never have heard of. So after graduating from High School, I enrolled at the Academy. At first I wasn’t entirely sure which route to go, debating between science, medical and counselling.” She smiled softly and shook her head a little as she thought back of those first months at the Academy. “But I soon realised that my passion lies in counselling. So I focused on that, but I always took an extra class or two that wasn’t mandatory and outside of my major.” Her gaze became a little unfocused and she stroked Liara’s curls absentmindedly as she continued. “My first posting after the Academy cruise was on the USS Charlottetown, where I met my late wife Kialeni and where Liara was born.” She took a sip of her coffee and a deep breath before she looked straight at Sara and continued, “I wasn’t doing well at all after Leni’s death and was on medical leave for a few months. It took me about a year to admit that the Charlottetown wasn’t a good place for me to stay. Too many memories. So I asked to transferred and was assigned to the Four Winds where the two of us have been ever since. It’s the only home Li can remember and she has never liked change much, which made it so hard for her to leave.” She gave her daughter’s narrow shoulders a gentle squeeze and kissed the top of her curly head.

~Cmdr. Enai, XO & Liara

“That’s quite a story. Thank you.” Sara addressed Liara. “I’m not much one for change either.” Turning back to Siadra she said “If either of you need anything to help this feel more like home, then please do it.”

“Thank you Captain. I appreciate that,” Siadra replied gratefully.

“Really?” Liara asked shyly as she peered up at Sara. “Mummy always says change is part of life,” she added and shifted her gaze from the Captain to her mother.

Siadra didn’t say anything to that and simply raised her eyebrows a little as she smiled at the Captain, trying to indicate that she left it to her if she wanted to say something to that or not.

“Well that’s true, change is a part of life.” Sara said. “But it’s not a very fun part.”

“I suppose it’s only fair we operate on the same basis of information about each other. I’m from San Francisco. Hard to avoid the Academy around there. Became a science officer at various posts. Joined command aboard the Chimera a few years ago. There’s another chapter, but we’ll discuss that another time.” She glanced at Liara.

Nodding in understand, Siadra moved her gaze briefly to her daughter as well, before turning her focus back towards Sara.

“Commander. Your background in counseling. How do you feel it will apply to a command situation?”

-Captain Sara Kiernan, CO

As the grown-ups talked more about things she didn’t find all that interesting, Liara pulled a small picture book out of the little bag she had with her and began looking at it while still nestling as close to her mother as she could.

~Liara

Siadra thought about that question for a few moments before she answered. “I know a lot about people and apart from being half-Betazoid, I can read people very well. I’m trained in different forms of therapy. One of them is systemic therapy. We all live in various systems and each person in a system affects the whole. I think all of the training and knowledge I have as a Counsellor will be beneficial not only in various types of missions, but on a day to day basis as well,” she replied thoughtfully. “There are different forms of leadership and each of them is valid. Because of my background and my personality mine is a fairly people oriented. Which has it’s strengths and flaws just as any other form of leadership.” Tilting her head slightly to the left, she pondered for a moment how to phrase the next part best. “Some people say that therapists are, or at least can be manipulativ. And to a degree that is true as we have to be very adaptive and use different approaches and skills with different people and in different situations. I dare say the same holds true with for both our positions. Both in various missions and everyday life on board this ship. So I think my experience and expertise in that regard will help me in my new role as First Officer as well.”

~Cmdr. Enai, XO

“Very well said Commander. We are currently short handed in the Counseling department, would you be willing to assist, if necessary? You are, of course, free to say no. Some officers prefer to avoid the previous departments after joining command staff, an entirely understandable preference.”

Sara rose and walked to the window of her ready room, staring at the stars. “Commander Enai, the maiden voyage of this new USS Asimov was a catastrophe. I’d like to avoid further incident like that. No voyage is risk free, but I’d very much like to keep the ship in space going forward. Which means we’ll need to move in sync, and speak with candor. Obviously, on the bridge, I need your support. But I will always want insight and advice given honestly. If you can do that, there’s no challenge we can’t meet. I suppose I’ve interrogated you enough, Do you have any questions for me?”
