Paddy thought for a moment, he had heard small rumblings among the crew about the anomaly, hell, he had to admit to himself that he was almost jealous that he wasn’t able to witness such feats by the Engineers. He chuckled lightheartedly and said, “Put it this way ma’am, it’ll be a mission to remember so it will,” McMillan couldn’t help but notice his Derry accent starting to creep out more and more in general conversation.

-Lieutenant Patrick McMillan: Counsellor-

“No, we won’t,” Siadra nodded. “That is for sure. It also made for a much more … intense start into my first assignment as First Officer than I would have imagined.” A soft sigh escaped her lips and she shook her head a little.

“Really?” Paddy cocked an eyebrow, “Did you have an ideal image for your first mission?”

-Lieutenant Patrick McMillan: Counsellor-

Siadra shook her head. “No, I didn’t. I did have an idea of how I’d arrive on the ship. Much the same way as I have on any of my previous assignments. I certainly didn’t see myself going on what might have been a suicide mission since we didn’t even know if the ship had survived let alone if the runabout would. It was also the reason why I hesitated to take on this position. My daughter already lost her other parent as my wife died shortly before her birth. I don’t want her to lose me as well,” Siadra replied emphatically.

Paddy took a small sip of coffee and replied, ‘I’m sorry for your loss Commander, how is your daughter doing?’

-Lieutenant Patrick McMillan: Counsellor-

Siadra took a moment or two to think about that question how to answer it. With concern playing across her pale features, she replied, “Liara doesn’t like change very much. So leaving the Four Winds, the only home she remembers, has been difficult for her. It will take a while for her to settle in and feel comfortable, but I’m confident that she will be able to and that she’ll be happy here. It helps a great deal that Lieutenant Si’Rek is here. He and my wife Kialeni had been friends before Leni and I met. Even when I was at my worst after her death and pushed everyone away, he managed not to take it personal and kept reaching out to me. I had no idea that he had just been assigned to the Asimov as well. He also did everything he could to be a part of Liara’s life. Sending her messages and gifts and a few times we met in person. Liara loves him dearly. She is with him now, exploring Engineering. She is so much like Leni in that way.” Feeling tears well up in her eyes, Siadra took a deep breath and looked away as she acknowledged in her mind what she was feeling and then let those emotions pass.

Paddy nodded thoughtfully, ‘It certainly is difficult for someone so young to not only lose a close family member, but also to move from one Starfleet ship to another.’ Paddy paused and picked up a PADD on the table next to him, ‘Take a look at these, they’re a series of Holodeck programs I could use with Liara in order to build her social confidence back up.’

-Lieutenant Patrick McMillan: Counsellor-

Reaching for the PaDD, Siadra nodded, “Liara never met her. I was still very pregnant when Leni died. But I do tell her about her. I want her to know that she was and still is deeply loved by both her parents.” Looking Paddy straight in the eyes, she admitted, “There are moments when I wonder if it is the right thing to do or if it makes it harder for her. What I want most for her is to be happy.”

Dropping her gaze to the PaDD, Siadra skimmed the list of titles and asked, “Can you tell me a bit more about these programs?”

~Cmdr. Enai, XO

Paddy shifted in his seat, ‘There’s a variety of different options; anything from a series of Flotter stories specifically designed for confidence building, to simulations of real social events like kids birthday parties. It depends on how quickly we think Liara’s confidence may build back up.’

-Lieutenant Patrick McMillan: Counsellor-

With her head tilted slightly to the left, Siadra thought about that and what might be best for Liara. “I think starting slowly would be good. She is very sensitive and I don’t want her to get overwhelmed and make things worse. I know that once she begins to settle in, it will get better. So while waiting and giving her the time and space she needs is good and important, I want her to also get the support that will be most beneficial for her. You’ll meet her at the dinner in my quarters tomorrow night. Maybe we can talk some more about this the next day or so?”

~Cmdr. Enai, XO

“I don’t want Liara to see our meetings as ‘therapy’, as I’m sure you don’t either. This is why the Flotter stories may come in handy, at least that way it seems like more fun for her, instead of the stereotypical table and chairs routine. I imagine it would also be incredibly beneficial for you to join Liara on the Holodeck, I feel trying to take part in the programs with only me would just cause her to shrink back into herself even further; always good to see a familiar face.”

-Lieutenant Patrick McMillan: Counsellor-

“Absolutely,” Siadra nodded. “Thank you Counsellor. I appreciate that a lot.” A soft smile played across her pale features, mixed with a hint of the relief she was feeling.

Gesturing from herself to Paddy and back, Siadra ask, “Shall we move on for now and clear each other for duty?” It wasn’t that she wanted to stop talking about her daughter and her well-being. At the same time she knew that they both needed to get their evaluations out of the way to actually be allowed to do their jobs. All the other details about how to proceed regarding Liara would have to wait till afterwards.

~Cmdr. Enai, XO

“Indeed,” Paddy replied, “I trust you’ve had no ill feelings since you came on board ma’am?”

-Lieutenant Patrick McMillan: Counsellor-

“Other than, as I have mentioned before, that I wouldn’t have minded a little less adrenaline filled arrival, I don’t have an ill feelings. Not towards this ship and her crew anyway,” the First Officer replied and then admitted, “I am wondering though if I made the right choice in accepting this position. Not because of me, but because of Liara. With a crew of only 70 the Asimov is a very small ship. The Four Winds was much larger and there were many families and children on board. She had teachers and classmates. Something she won’t have here. Or at least not in the same way. It makes me question if I made the right choice.”
