It was mid-afternoon when the sound of Vanessa’s engines could be heard. In moments, Shara’s husband set the ship down almost exactly where it had been that morning. There was a long pause and nothing happened.

Having wandered barefoot back towards the house when the ship came into view, Shara came to stand on the ground in front of the porch, a hand up to shield her eyes from the sun. A light breeze tousled her brown hair and she wore an uncommonly serene smile as she stood there holding flowers and grasses in her hand.

Inside, Micah looked at Nadine. “Deep breath. You’ve waited a long time for this moment. So… be in this moment. It won’t come again… but it may be the first in a long of moments to come. You ready?”

Nadine gave him a sideways look. “No, but let’s do this anyway,” she said with a smirk.

The ramp slid open and Micah was the first to come down. He waved at Sha and blew her a kiss, then he turned and reached back to help Nadine down the ramp. Yes, she could walk. But this was a moment Micah new a steadying hand might just be welcome.

Stepping down, Nadines gaze was fixed on Shara, so it was just as well that Micah guided her down the ramp since she really wasn’t minding where her feet were.

As they walked closer to the house, Micah stopped them about ten feet from the porch. “Wife… meet Nadine Wells. Nadine Wells… Shara Calloway. Y’all girls go on inside. I’m gonna go see a man about a piano.” and he winked at Sha and patted Nadine on the shoulder and whispered “Careful. She bites.” and then he chuckled. “Hopefully only on me, though. Go on. You got this.” and he walked slowly back to the ship.

OOC: This is Nadine if anyone cares to compare her to Shara:
“And don’t forget my crate!” Shara called out, knowing full well he had it handled. Returning her attention to Nadine, she took the woman in and drew in a breath. It was like looking in the mirror but where someone had turned back time a little and done a little tweaking. “Hi,” she said softly.

“Hi,” Nadine said, her voice equally hushed. Her heart was thudding but the longer she gazed at Shara, the more natural standing in front of her became. For several long moments the two women just stared at each other.

Finally, Shara gestured with her head. “Come on inside. I’ve got to find something to put these flowers in and I’m pretty sure Micah isn’t the kinda man to keep pretty vases around, but you never know, he does constantly surprise me.”

Moving into the house and straight into the kitchen, Shara gently set down her bundle and began to rummage through cupboards. “Trip was alright?”

“Yeah, it was good. Never been on a ship like that before and your husband is something else.”

Shara looked over her shoulder and grinned. “Damn straight he is,” she said with a laugh.

“He said you just got married. Congratulations!” Nadine said, observing the small tiny details of Shara’s expressions and mannerisms. She seemed… controlled. And yet that detail didn’t surprise Nadine in the least.

“Thanks! Wasn’t exactly a planned thing. It kinda just happened and I’m still getting used to it,” Shara said, shaking her head.

“You eloped?” Nadine said, this time actually surprised.

Shara shook her head, holding back her embarrassment. “More or less, but we can get to that later.”

“Sure,” Nadine said in wonderment. So, so many questions. But they had time and she didn’t want to rush anything. She didn’t know why but Shara seemed like she might be spooked by too much personal stuff too quick. Or maybe it was just Nadine’s worries and nerves at play.

Micah went on board Vanessa and made sure the piano was secured. If he was being honest, between his own physiology and the artifical and heavily modified prosthesis, he could move the piano easily. He finished making sure it was secure and then went to the cockpit and keyed in a code on the comms.

=/\= Yeah? =/\= came a gruff voice dropped the other end.

=/\= Its me. Need you to do a full file on one Nadine Wells, teacher, 5th grade, Portland. And do one on her ex-husband as well. If anything flags, relay it through the accounting firm in Nashville. And I mean a full file. And if it even smells hinky, tell me. =/\=

=/\= OK. You want FedSec in on it? =/\=

=/\= Nope. You and me only. And if she comes back off, prep for a full wipe. All records. No trace… =/\= He looked at the two figures through the windows of the cabin.

=/\= She will never have existed. =/\=

While the files percolated, inside, Shara had picked out a tall glass that was some sort of beer stein or something and put her bundle of flowers and grasses inside, filling it up with water.

She turned to face her grown daughter, hands braced behind her on the edge of the counter. “Look, Nadine, I’m going to be real with you. I’m not an easy person to get to know. Most of my life has revolved around secrets and it’s not in my nature to just share stuff. But I recognize that this moment matters and holding back where I don’t really need to won’t make things okay. So just know that it might be difficult for me at times but I’m trying. That and there is a major disclaimer I need to state up front.”

“Oh?” Nadine asked, observing her birth mother carefully.

“Things have happened with my work that have left me with PTSD. Extreme anxiety about those I care about is one of my triggers. Just know that while I want to hear anything and everything you have to share with me, if at any point I’m struggling with the information I might need to take a break and maybe have less details. It’s the only way this will work.”

“Of course,” Nadine said quietly. “I was honest with your husband. I’m not here out of some vendetta or to cause you pain. I just want answers to questions I’ve had my whole life. Answers it seems only you can give me. And to get to know and understand you a bit. I know it wont be easy, but I appreciate you telling me your limit. I’ll try my best not to cross that line, but if I do, I apologize in advance.”

Out in Vanessa, the console chirped with the results:

Micah read and memorized the files, then deleted them and wiped the registry from the comms. He went back, activated the sled and moved the piano and footlocker off the ship, across the grass and to the steps. He raised the power slightly on the sled and it rose over the top step and he gracefully moved it to the front door.

As the door opened, Micah said “Sha, you better have made a spot for this thing already or it’s going in the fireplace!” and he began slowly moving it through the door, taking care not to scratch it… ‘it’ being the piano. Micah knew the door Sha wouldn’t care about… but the piano? The woman would kill him.
